The Mamas and the Papas ...almost.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:13 (fifteen years ago) link

When I was a kid I went around believing Abba had all died in a plane crash for some reason, maybe a bigger boy told me. Turns out it wasn't true.

chap, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:15 (fifteen years ago) link

The Wailers... almost (don't die, Bunny, but that would help this thread)

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Hongroe

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought everyone in Lynyrd Skynyrd died in that plane crash, but apparently half the band survived :-(

(er, that's only :-( for the purpose of this thread, I don't know their music and I don't want to either, I think)

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, only three members of the band died. That's only like a fifth of the band.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Re: thread title - Are there that many bands from before the sixties whose original members are all dead?

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

The starting line-up of the 1923 Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Charlie Parker Dead
Charles Mingus Dead
Bud Powell Dead
Max Roach Dead
Dizzy Gillespie Dead

So, there's another.

Oilyrags, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link

So who all have you googled and been proven wrong?

So far, the Kingston Trio, Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs, Badfinger, and The Bar-Kays all still have original members living.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

How could Charlie Parker been a part of a band that formed in the 60s?

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I was responding to Stan M's question.

Oilyrags, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks for that pre-60s example! I hadn't considered jazz (or blues) bands - except, they didn't use band names, so maybe that's why I hadn't thought of them.

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Except, sometimes they do! Anyway, membership tends to be more fluid in 'em, with a few notable exceptions (Art Ensemble of Chicago, Modern Jazz Quartet, blahblahblah)

Oilyrags, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:55 (fifteen years ago) link

So who all have you googled and been proven wrong?

Durutti Column, Sweet, Canned Heat, some Krautrock bands, all have at least one surviving original member (even if they're not part of the current band anymore, like in Sweet).

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Surprised to find out that Axl Rose is still alive.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

For some reason I thought the Lovin' Spoonful might be such a band, but evidently not.

I had no idea people stayed away from Skynyrd without having heard them!

Euler, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean, who have heard of Skynyrd, but stay away without knowing their music.

Euler, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't know, I just never checked them out - Southern Rock, I hear, so I'm thinking it probably won't be my cup of tea (although I do like some of what The Black Crowes, My Morning Jacket, Green On Red, Drive-By Truckers do), and then I see the logo with the confederate flag & I guess they're gonna be redneck racist way too southernly American & I switch off.

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:14 (fifteen years ago) link

are you American StanM? I'm not trying to be a jerk btw, just curious.

Euler, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:16 (fifteen years ago) link

No, Belgian.

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:17 (fifteen years ago) link

btw Jimi Hendrix Experience is a good candidate for this "honor", 2/3 gone. This is a pretty grim thing to search about, though.

Euler, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Not even one black metal band has killed each other completely :-/

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:21 (fifteen years ago) link

oh ok StanM. I gather Skynyrd's isn't huge outside the US but damn, it's top shelf rock and surely worth exploring if you're giving e.g. Drive-By Truckers a try.

Euler, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:22 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, I will, thanks for the encouragement (and apologies for the prejudice) !

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:51 (fifteen years ago) link

So far, the Kingston Trio, Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs, Badfinger, and The Bar-Kays all still have original members living.

Badfinger is kinda iffy . . . Joey Molland joined the band after "Come and Get It" was recorded, but before it was released, so is he really an original member? Everyone else is definitely dead.

Pancakes Hackman, Monday, 21 July 2008 23:08 (fifteen years ago) link

New York Dolls are getting close.

I don't want to join in the "I can't believe Stan hasn't heard Skynryd!" but I thought EVERYONE had heard Freebird.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 01:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Nevermind:

As of 2008, Bill Legend is the only surviving member of the 1970-1973 T. Rex lineup.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 01:01 (fifteen years ago) link

This is a good question.

Yes, Mayhem still has living original members. I believe one of them is in Burzum.

2 of the 4 Tops are dead, and one is incapacitated so that pretty much counts I reckon. Also: 50% of the Shangri-Las...

J@cob, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 07:58 (fifteen years ago) link

And 6 out of 11 of the Skatalites, including all the key players like Don Drummond and Tommy McCook...

J@cob, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 08:01 (fifteen years ago) link

If I didn't say at least three members, then Tyrannosaurus Rex would count as would probably many others. But it really takes three to be a band.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 08:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Seems like we haven't found one yet. More near misses:

Johnny Echols still flying the flag for Love... oh hold on, I assume Snoopy is still alive too?

Dingers of (la) Dusseldorf dead, as is Andreas Schell, but Hans Lampe presumed still alive and kicking (it)

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 July 2008 09:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I keep thinking of bands of the top of my head, then realising that they are all alive.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 09:22 (fifteen years ago) link

McCoy Tyner the last one standing from the "classic" Coltrane quartet.

Louis Moholo the only surviving member of the core line-up of the Blue Notes.

Seven members of Reba McEntire's backing band were killed in a plane crash in 1991.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 09:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Sadly, the London Boys don't qualify on account of being a duo.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 09:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Neither do McFadden and Whitehead then...

J@cob, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Are there any Cowsills left?

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Wikipedia says there are three.

J@cob, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess a lot of Cambodian groups would qualify :-(

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:41 (fifteen years ago) link

But it really takes three to be a band.

I Dream of Wires.

DavidM, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 14:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, Mayhem still has living original members. I believe one of them is in Burzum.

Varg Vikernes was never an original member of Mayhem, was he? Mind you, Mayhem was started as a very local underground band and Mr. Vikernes lived more than 500 kilometres away at that point.
But I am pretty sure the rest of the guys Oystein Aarseth started Mayhem together with are still alive.

And, OK, I have seen White Stripes defined as a band, but in my book, they are a duo. Just another kind of duo than the vocal duos/synth duos you would usually think of with that kind of lineup.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link

you normally think of bands with nothing but drumkit and guitar as being a vocal/synth duo?

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 07:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I dream of wires are very much alive.

It's sad that the closest we get to this is The Ramones, as they were more the seventies. Sad for the Ramones, that is.

I may be cranking the fame-ometer down a little far here, but two thirds of the Ran-Dells have died and I can't find much about the third. Kind of :/ now as I see the main guy who made the synthesised noises only died last year, and he has a bio up saying how he didn't think his hit was much to be proud of until people started emailing him about it 35+ years later. I could've dropped him a note...

I'm not in the US but I wish I could've not heard 6000 bad covers of "Sweet Home Alabama" by similarly non-USian aging rockers in my tiny English smalltown. They like to play "Country Roads (Take Me Home)" too. Guys! You are not from the southern USA! Cut it out!

(My daydream is of assembling enough musical talent to go to the local open-mic night, rant about this for five minutes, and then bust into "Alternative Ulster")

Jeez, I should learn to read better, for a moment I thought Pancakes' post meant all/both of the Spinanes were dead (for similar skim-readers: no, just that there are only 2 of them, and they were a band).
