lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 14:52 (twelve years ago)

(this is very "migrate", which is a plus for me)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 14:53 (twelve years ago)

ok i've only heard it once and "UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty." is basically embedded in my head forever

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 14:54 (twelve years ago)

UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. UH. you're thirsty. i'm resigned to none of these singles being hits but i'm pretty optimistic about this album given her last few and the people who worked on this one

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:18 (twelve years ago)

the lack of hits hasn't correlated with the quality of her music since like 2005 so i'm not really awaiting that smash single either

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:21 (twelve years ago)

i mean, e=mc2 was packed with hits and she still managed to mostly fuck the campaign up, then memoirs pretty explicitly didn't aim for hits, so it's a moot point really

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:22 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, Emancipation was imo the least interesting of the last five albums, including Christmas Part II.

Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 17:18 (twelve years ago)

Get out.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 20:07 (twelve years ago)

damn, this really is a mess :/

The Reverend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 20:10 (twelve years ago)

"Beautiful" went platinum though. It's kind of a hit. Not a smash, but casual radio listeners are aware of it. #81 for the year http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End_Hot_100_singles_of_2013 so it's about as much of a hit as "Adorn" or "Swimming Pools."

billstevejim, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 20:36 (twelve years ago)

I've heard it at bars.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 20:36 (twelve years ago)

well sure, it got out there a bit. it's just being measured against, y'know, 18 career #1s and a gigantic comeback less than a decade ago.

some dude, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 20:41 (twelve years ago)

yeah of course. i guess i'm just always surprised how many people are aware of it considering it didn't place Top 10, compared to songs that no one remembers that actually achieved single-digit status.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 20:45 (twelve years ago)

let's not forget Obsessed climbing up to #7 when Memoirs came out! weeeee!

surm, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 20:47 (twelve years ago)

i remember obsessed spending several weeks at #11 before airplay finally pushed it to #7 and finding it very funny

dyl, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:26 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah and this new song is garbage, what a waste of such a #buzzworthy title

dyl, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:27 (twelve years ago)

"#Beautiful" significantly outlasted its chart run on radio here

The Reverend, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 05:44 (twelve years ago)

i like it. it's like a schmaltzier Migrate.

you tryin to be a boss nowwwwwwwwww

surm, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 12:50 (twelve years ago)

mariah's a cappellas o_O

surm, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 12:53 (twelve years ago)

"One More Try" is a cover of George Michael's 1988 single of the same name.

;,)

maura, Thursday, 15 May 2014 21:40 (twelve years ago)

!!

now that i listened to this song a bit, i feel like it's done what triumphant was trying to do better. but if it really wanted to be a flat out kickass song, she woulda focuzed on the "u tryin to be a boss now" hook in a major way.

surm, Thursday, 15 May 2014 22:07 (twelve years ago)

probably that should have been the chorus, and the chorus shoulda been the bridge. crazy hot hook.

surm, Thursday, 15 May 2014 23:20 (twelve years ago)

priceless performance on the Today Show - a new song! 'You Don't Know What To Do' (dunno the official title off the top of my head)

plus Heidi Klum in the audience. killer. it's the 2nd clip down.

How to Destroy How to Dress Well (lou), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 16:13 (twelve years ago)

it's super low key, doesn't really sound that different from "memoirs"

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 16:26 (twelve years ago)

I really like "Dedicated" and "Meteorite".

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 16:34 (twelve years ago)

listening to a shitty rip that's missing a couple of the songs but on first listen this seems to have a lot of real peaks but also feels more of a hodgepodge than memoirs - i felt that may have shied away from anything immediate but it felt conceived as a really well-sequenced album qua album, whereas this has something of a "just shove everything i've recorded over the past few years into one file" feel about it. but apart from the final ballads that i don't particularly care about most of it seems good-to-great at least

lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 09:19 (twelve years ago)

oh my god fabolous' bite of "trophies" on this album is so blatant that it has to be intentional right?

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 18:34 (twelve years ago)

i actually think it's very nicely sequenced!

maura, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 19:17 (twelve years ago)

Yeah my initial worry when they seemed to just be pushing the album out to finally get something out was that it would be a hodgepodge of material, but I think it all flows really well actually.
