i'm resigned to none of these singles being hits but i'm pretty optimistic about this album given her last few and the people who worked on this one

the lack of hits hasn't correlated with the quality of her music since like 2005 so i'm not really awaiting that smash single either

i mean, e=mc2 was packed with hits and she still managed to mostly fuck the campaign up, then memoirs pretty explicitly didn't aim for hits, so it's a moot point really

Yeah, Emancipation was imo the least interesting of the last five albums, including Christmas Part II.

"Beautiful" went platinum though. It's kind of a hit. Not a smash, but casual radio listeners are aware of it. #81 for the year http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End_Hot_100_singles_of_2013 so it's about as much of a hit as "Adorn" or "Swimming Pools."

well sure, it got out there a bit. it's just being measured against, y'know, 18 career #1s and a gigantic comeback less than a decade ago.

yeah of course. i guess i'm just always surprised how many people are aware of it considering it didn't place Top 10, compared to songs that no one remembers that actually achieved single-digit status.

let's not forget Obsessed climbing up to #7 when Memoirs came out! weeeee!

i remember obsessed spending several weeks at #11 before airplay finally pushed it to #7 and finding it very funny

now that i listened to this song a bit, i feel like it's done what triumphant was trying to do better. but if it really wanted to be a flat out kickass song, she woulda focuzed on the "u tryin to be a boss now" hook in a major way.

probably that should have been the chorus, and the chorus shoulda been the bridge. crazy hot hook.

it's super low key, doesn't really sound that different from "memoirs"

I really like "Dedicated" and "Meteorite".

listening to a shitty rip that's missing a couple of the songs but on first listen this seems to have a lot of real peaks but also feels more of a hodgepodge than memoirs - i felt that may have shied away from anything immediate but it felt conceived as a really well-sequenced album qua album, whereas this has something of a "just shove everything i've recorded over the past few years into one file" feel about it. but apart from the final ballads that i don't particularly care about most of it seems good-to-great at least

Yeah my initial worry when they seemed to just be pushing the album out to finally get something out was that it would be a hodgepodge of material, but I think it all flows really well actually.
