It may take a year or two (or more or even more than that if he goes to jail) but Chris Brown is a very nice looking guy with a small modicum of talent. It is not beyond impossible to believe that he could reinvent/repackage himself to a forgiving public.

gospel album.
"WTF?" duet with Rhianna about "how hard love is" on the followup album that all the kids love and all the critics rush to write articles about.
presto.

my girl and i spent an hour or so listening to the eponymous album and Exclusive and it's amazing how often he talks about fighting and girl you can't get away and whatever. Really colors going back to them.
That said, they're pretty damn good albums.

So this Pain to Go Away thing...?

Plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:07 (seventeen years ago)

Instead of R Kelly and MJ, shouldn't the closest comparison be Ike Turner?

i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

I think you're supposed to feel bad for him! It's a ballsy track.

ILM is a gross place full of coersion and sexual manipulation (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

Its funny how it twists the pleading tone of R&B boy-ballads

Plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

you have to have an R. Kelly level of lack of self-awareness to start your sorry-for-hitting-you-girl track with 'feels like someone dropped a ton of bricks on my stomach'

ILM is a gross place full of coersion and sexual manipulation (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

i'm gonna err on the side of this being an old track, cuz they'd have to have some fuckin balls to try and paint him as the victim and not put some ish along the lines of "sorry, blame it on me" out. i'm sure ppl will jump on the "umbrella" line but it's a pretty obvious metaphor for a teenpop r&b song that it's impossible to tell if it's definitive or not. either way this song is pretty dope

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

you might be right about that; I suppose it's a song he made about rhianna from before this all went down. is this some sort of radio release or just something that's getting blog exposure?

ILM is a gross place full of coersion and sexual manipulation (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

if this is real i think it's smart for his ppl to "leak" an apology song (or whatever the hell this is) instead of putting out a song that's an OFFICIAL STATEMENT. on the other hand it would be a good move for them to put his apology song on itunes and then agree to donate 100% of the proceeds to a foundation for battered women or something.

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's way too early from a PR perspective for him to associate his name with ANYTHING battered, fish and chicken inclusive. Dude gotta lay low for awhile.

ILM is a gross place full of coersion and sexual manipulation (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

yeah - keeping his name in people's minds for whatever reason will just ensure that they won't forget shit

― ice cr?m, Sunday, March 8, 2009 3:28 AM (17 hours ago)

I think the vanilla part is irrelevant ... plenty of pop stars (e.g. Britney Spears) originally had their careers rooted in portraying a squeaky clean image. Add me to the list of people who think that CB's comeback + redemption is inevitable.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

after a half second of googling i've found lyric sites for "Pain To Go Away" from 2008, so no, it's not a legit apology song

Badazz Luhrmann (some dude), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

im still wondering what "fuck that guys for good" means

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

fuck that, guys; for GOOD

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

yesterday i stood at a newsstand looking at all the magazine covers trying to figure out exactly what's going on between these two and couldn't get it straight. the tabloids (on covers alone) were telling 20 different stories. what's the deal?

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

the deal is there's been very little solid info so it's open season on making shit up?

Badazz Luhrmann (some dude), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

ok. thanks for saving me a trip tmz

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

Chris Brown and Rihanna are undergoing extensive plastic surgery/gender reassignment so that they actually become each other, after which they will get married and adopt 4 of Octomom's newborns.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

fuck it im gonna go check it out. this sounds crazy!! ^^^

That's just Us Weekly's version. People has something completely different.

coming back to this for the hell of it -- pretty much every teen idol goes through some 'loss of innocence' type of scandal, but the when and the how makes all the difference...Britney's got pretty crazy eventually, but it still happened very gradually over several years/albums...at the age and career stage Chris and Rihanna are at right now, Justin and Britney hadn't even gone through their breakup/songs about each other phase yet. and Justin's big PR sin during that was i guess insinuating that she gave him blowjobs? whole different ballgame.

so he's only finished because another celebrity is involved? I don't get that logic. (See also: Ike Turner, Phil Spector, any number of famous musicians who were well-known to be doing shitty things to their co-performers). The pop machine forgives all, because the only thing that matters in the end is whether or not the narrative makes money. Public morality is a non-issue, this is a market-driven thing.

that goes double for the whole squeaky-clean --> fall from grace --> redemption storyline

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

xxxx no i meant like, when I was looking at the mag covers I couldn't figure out if they actually gotten back together, were secretly married, had gone on some vacation, if there were legal troubles for brown, etc, like wtf is going on

If you're trying to argue "the pop machine forgives all," Ike Turner probably isn't the best example to make

haha no kidding

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

Ike wasn't really publicly vilified until Tina left him in '76. Up to then pop market was all too happy to look the other way.

guys do we really have to be that mean?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

we're talking about a battered face of a multiplatinum star on the internet and you're actually writing "well they looked the other way for ike turner"

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

lots of differences between that and this, first and foremost being there wasn't an omnipresent media reporting on every ike beatdown

and how (omar little), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

my only point is that CELEBRITY BEATS OTHER CELEBRITY is in no way a guaranteed career ender.

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

if CB releases a genuinely affecting, well-received "baby I'm sorry" ballad or whatever and he and Rihanna stay together the press will eat that shit up

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

not if the song sucks

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

if CB releases a well-received "i'm sorry i beat your face in" ballad it will be well-received

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Chris Brown would have to turn into Eminem before that ballad would be well-received.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

Look I'd like to think I live in the kind of world where Chris Brown will spend a long time in jail and that when he gets out he'll be persona-non-grata for the entire entertainment industry. I have no personal desire to see Brown be successful. But history has shown that not all people who committ scummy scummy acts get the comeuppance they richly deserve (see Roman Polanski.)

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

It isn't a foregone conclusion that consumers en masse are willing to forgive Chris Brown, even if Rihanna and Akon are.
