Feel like tracks from AHOTBO are making a really strong showing, given where it landed in the albums poll.

listening through s/t now, which is better than i remembered. its weird how raw the lyrics are. i tend to think of them as a more refined, sort of oblique band even, lyrically, and then you have lyrics like: "Sold out, do, do you wanna it / On a magazine cover? / Take it, it's my body / Take it, I want money / Diamonds are a girl's best friend"

wat is teh waht (s.clover), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 03:44 (twelve years ago)

I love that first 7", always thought they sounded a lot better on it than the subsequent 10"

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 04:10 (twelve years ago)

I was given the 10" as a review copy when it came out and I don't think I panned it but it wasn't what I was expecting having seen the two previous bands. I should try and dig that review up tonight.

been listening to this on repeat. so great, so bouncy!

wat is teh waht (s.clover), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 15:43 (twelve years ago)

i remember "real man" was actually v. important to people i knew at the time. only 1000 ppl bought the debut 10" but all of them put "real man" on mixtapes for their queer friends?

wat is teh waht (s.clover), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 15:49 (twelve years ago)

That was mean of them

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 15:54 (twelve years ago)

Uh I bought it bt didn't tape it for friends cos they'd already got that message (andit's a bad song)? Can see it's imptce at that time in specific places tho, f'sure. I ws in NZ tho, was kinda a "hey others!" thing

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 16:16 (twelve years ago)

Love "A Real Man", just narrowly missed my ballot. And yeah, it meant a lot to me. The s/t bangs pretty hard, and while there are some lowlights I think it's less spotty than a few of their albums. Plus it has their first stone-cold classic "Be Yr Mama", which I'm hoping shows up (but it's not looking too optimistic)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 17:30 (twelve years ago)

The only Woods tune I might've voted for.

Jumpers is incredible, classic Letterman performance.

The opening drums! The new "Be My Baby" for the 21st century! I find it intensely sensual.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 18:17 (twelve years ago)

Anyone else think Corin sounds a lot like Geddy Lee on the opening lines of this?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 18:18 (twelve years ago)

xp Not to be confused with "Oh!" which liberally quotes the drumbeat from "Be My Baby"

"Great job, girls!"

(Love the performance, but Letterman, eeps.)

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 18:29 (twelve years ago)

Haha I do confuse "One Beat" and "Oh!" all the time actually.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 18:31 (twelve years ago)

Also, I'll have to listen to "Oh!" more carefully to peep the "BMB" quotations.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 18:31 (twelve years ago)

The only Woods tune I might've voted for.

― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn)

The only Woods song I did vote for. Didn't even consider any of the other songs.

I'm sure someone already pointed out how great their title tracks are. One Beat is one of the best.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 18:39 (twelve years ago)

Also, their lead-off tracks. There's still plenty of poll left, but my guess is all but one of the post-S/T openers made the top 27 of this poll.

TOO LOW!

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 18:44 (twelve years ago)

My #4, and the first S-K song I went completely nuts for.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 18:44 (twelve years ago)

One of the last songs I cut from my list. That was one of my favourites the first time I played Dig Me Out but other songs have overtaken it since.

So furious.

I mean the song is, not me.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:01 (twelve years ago)

Wow I can't believe I didn't vote for this, last minute scratch.

JANET! CARRIE! CAN YOU FEEL IT?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:21 (twelve years ago)

^^^ My Twitter wallpaper! Love the call-and-response between Corin and Carrie and Janet, one of their most fun and playful moments.

Still smh @ it beating out "Little Mouth" though.

XP YESSS TARFUMES.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:22 (twelve years ago)

I had the realization the other day that "Step Aside" is what High Time-era MC5 would've sounded like if they'd been female.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:25 (twelve years ago)

first track i heard from one beat, i can remember driving around in the country outside of athens listening to wuog when it was still on the air and this just coming on out of nowhere and rocking my fucking world. easily my fave s-k in that pop anthem mode. RIGHTEOUS.

balls, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:26 (twelve years ago)

Actually thinking about the great moments in "Step Aside" -- the C&R sections, the whoo-ooh-oohs, the na-na-na-na-nana nanana outro -- makes me not so butthurd.

Wow, never heard it like that before...that's totally OTMFM.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:29 (twelve years ago)

Also, the horn parts seem to echo/mimic those in the Who's "The Real Me."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:30 (twelve years ago)

I'll take that as an endorsement to listen to the MC5.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:30 (twelve years ago)

OK, I'll say it... TOO LOW.

"Step Aside" has appeared on many mix tapes.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:32 (twelve years ago)

"move it up / one time"

"knife through the heart of our exploitation / disassemble our discrimination"

carrie's wiggly rock legs in late period sk videos are awesome.

wat is teh waht (s.clover), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:34 (twelve years ago)

That's two in a row I feel silly about not voting for.

Damn me, I guess.

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:35 (twelve years ago)

honestly i'm glad they didn't really do any other tracks like this. but i'm so glad they did this one.

wat is teh waht (s.clover), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 19:35 (twelve years ago)

yeah i'll second that
