Anonymous and Size of Our Love were last-minute cuts from my ballot. I voted for "Sympathy," my favorite song off One Beat and one of their most affecting.

my ballot was prejudiced towards the barn-burners (i put "the fox" high in my ballot for the giddiness of "i'll go / i'll go / and there's NO LOOKING BACK!"), but "the size of our love" was so important to me at one point. re-listening evokes a total sense-memory of when i first heard it (first year of college, sitting on the grass outside the library, achingly and fruitlessly in love).

"sympathy" was also on my ballot; i love the combo of corin's concrete despair and and carrie's imagistic strut.

Woo Entertain! I was worried it would miss the cut. The Jumpers to Rollercoaster section of The Woods is one of the best stretches in S-K history.

Wow, seriously didn't expect that to even make the poll, let alone the top half. I mean, I love every song on THR, but I definitely consider "The End of You" to be one of its lesser tracks.

Ha, I was wondering what song it was that made all the (early) ballots! This was my #11, but it's always been a THR highlight for me. Love the hunkering down/us-against-the-world sentiment (magnified by the ferocious music).

It's true, but imo almost all of them came between 1996-2000.

Kinda surprised about "Light Rail Coyote"! I seem to recall that it somehow got painted with the same ambivalence of "Combat Rock" when One Beat came out.

entertain and the fox are as not-fun as i remember, ditto light-rail coyote. i guess they're all part of a late-phase "rawk" sk sound that's technically pretty intricate, but feels sort of plodding

That first side is a marvel.

My #1. I love the big meaty riff and the sheer morass of the chorus, Corin howling in the back like a pack of wolves while Carrie deadpans a hook on top. It's one of those mystery songs to me, like how did human beings make this sound?

oh wow, i love The End of You. the sequence running from Carrie's spare semi-spoken chorus into the vine-like guitar interlude and back into Corin's fragile verse is one of my favourite stretches of music in all of S-K.

i guess big big lights was post DMO actually. its pretty well realized. surf song is apparently from the debut 7"? its hilarious

Feel like tracks from AHOTBO are making a really strong showing, given where it landed in the albums poll.

listening through s/t now, which is better than i remembered. its weird how raw the lyrics are. i tend to think of them as a more refined, sort of oblique band even, lyrically, and then you have lyrics like: "Sold out, do, do you wanna it / On a magazine cover? / Take it, it's my body / Take it, I want money / Diamonds are a girl's best friend"

I love that first 7", always thought they sounded a lot better on it than the subsequent 10"

I was given the 10" as a review copy when it came out and I don't think I panned it but it wasn't what I was expecting having seen the two previous bands. I should try and dig that review up tonight.

i remember "real man" was actually v. important to people i knew at the time. only 1000 ppl bought the debut 10" but all of them put "real man" on mixtapes for their queer friends?

Uh I bought it bt didn't tape it for friends cos they'd already got that message (andit's a bad song)? Can see it's imptce at that time in specific places tho, f'sure. I ws in NZ tho, was kinda a "hey others!" thing

Love "A Real Man", just narrowly missed my ballot. And yeah, it meant a lot to me. The s/t bangs pretty hard, and while there are some lowlights I think it's less spotty than a few of their albums. Plus it has their first stone-cold classic "Be Yr Mama", which I'm hoping shows up (but it's not looking too optimistic)
