the good thing about herb is that he took the sound of drill and decided not to be hemiolaing all over it

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 18 April 2014 20:47 (twelve years ago)

was waiting for a hemiola stab

i look at lyrics to tracks like 'savage' they are more economical w/ fewer wasted words, right to the point

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 18 April 2014 21:50 (twelve years ago)

they both serve to create different effects obv but i find one to be a more efficient use of language than the other

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 18 April 2014 21:51 (twelve years ago)

lil herb will never make an album as good as finally rich, i feel confident in saying that

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 April 2014 21:58 (twelve years ago)

never been a backpacker but there's still street rappers I'll never "get" I guess

nova, Saturday, 19 April 2014 05:47 (twelve years ago)

fabioland was super bland and unmemorable to me. would rather listen to keef, though not cause i think he's more talented.

posi riot (some dude), Saturday, 19 April 2014 10:50 (twelve years ago)

Weird how non-enthused the reaction to Lil Herb is. The first 3 tracks or so are a bit dull, but really picks up after that. Who knows how he'll develop, maybe nowhere interesting, but it's still his first tape after all.

MikoMcha, Saturday, 19 April 2014 13:52 (twelve years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I'm enthused and like the tape. It sounds to me though like a talented kid who hasn't figured out exactly how he wants his art to sound or whose heart isn't fully in it yet to me.

I never said anything about who had more talent as if that's even quantifiable either, but keef has applied his in more effective ways so far, IMO

is this any good?

j., Sunday, 20 April 2014 19:55 (twelve years ago)

If you're familiar w the story it's probably not all that essential. I like Jeff Weiss but

rap steve gadd (D-40), Sunday, 20 April 2014 21:47 (twelve years ago)

Thugger/gucci tape is pretty fire

rap steve gadd (D-40), Sunday, 20 April 2014 21:47 (twelve years ago)

I do think it's funny how being more self consciously "weird" makes him less controversial w internet rap nerds than keef was

rap steve gadd (D-40), Sunday, 20 April 2014 21:57 (twelve years ago)

Ehh that's how it always is, any kind of "weird" angle gets instant traction w/ some crowds. And tbf Keef got the weird tag a little more than a lot of other guys.

posi riot (some dude), Monday, 21 April 2014 00:22 (twelve years ago)

mixtape is cool but Thug doesn't seem all that present on it & that's the main reason I was interested

I was thinking if dude actually does the number of projects he's said he will, it'll be like Wayne '07 if all those ideas he tossed out (T-Wayne, Juelz Santana, Bad Ass Grasshoppers lol) actually happened in full mixtape/album form

nova, Monday, 21 April 2014 00:25 (twelve years ago)

are the new Fat Trel or King Los worth listening to?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 21 April 2014 00:28 (twelve years ago)

1 he's on every track and does like every hook? How is he "not present"

2 saying he would be like 07 Wayne is so weird, he's clearly evolved his own style

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 21 April 2014 00:49 (twelve years ago)

Sorry if that seems blunt I just mean he doesn't really have a Wayne esque career path IMO

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 21 April 2014 01:04 (twelve years ago)

I didn't mean to compare him to Wayne directly stylistically, I just meant the quantity of different collaborations/projects.

and yeah he's present in that he's there a bunch it just doesn't seem like he lets loose on most of the tracks like he has on some previous stuff

nova, Monday, 21 April 2014 01:42 (twelve years ago)

I dunno he sounds pretty much like himself IMO .... He's basically toned it down since ICFN3

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 21 April 2014 01:57 (twelve years ago)

Ehh that's how it always is, any kind of "weird" angle gets instant traction w/ some crowds. And tbf Keef got the weird tag a little more than a lot of other guys.

Yeah I forgot there was this period where ppl really thought he was a new lil b or something , so weird

new fat trel has moments

sisilafami, Monday, 21 April 2014 11:03 (twelve years ago)

ola playa - slime season is dope. it's more or less a posse album and a necessary showcase of young thug 'associates' a la flockaveli. (nb rapper quality varies as much as on flockaveli)

as much as you flipped for the last Em record just off of technique and internal rhyming, you should check for Los, the quality of his tapes is never quite where i want it to be but of the young guys out there he's really one of the best for that kind of showboating

some dude, Thursday, 24 April 2014 01:01 (twelve years ago)

what do you bros think about kevin gates?

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 24 April 2014 15:21 (twelve years ago)

Gates can flat out rhyme, lots of great tracks on the new tape ("Movie," "Wish I Had It"), but there's some violent misogyny on "Posed to Be in Love" which is very distracting and somewhat out of character.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 24 April 2014 15:37 (twelve years ago)

Gates is one of the better artists to rise up over the last couple years.

kidd-gilchrist-douglas-roberts- (Spottie), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:25 (twelve years ago)

he seems like a melancholy, down-to-earth dude in interviews.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:38 (twelve years ago)

he's pretty open about his depression and how shitty he can be iirc

kidd-gilchrist-douglas-roberts- (Spottie), Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:51 (twelve years ago)

His songs seem to come from an honest emotional space, except when he's clearly fucking around ("Weight," "Kevin Gates," "Thinkin With My Dick"),

voodoo chili, Thursday, 24 April 2014 18:11 (twelve years ago)

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 26 April 2014 17:19 (twelve years ago)

While riding home drunk on the subway last night, I found The Devil's Violence to be really affecting. It seemed a bit too on the nose when I first listened to it -- rapping under the name The Devil, calling the mixtape Violence and filling it with blasts of noise, news reports about death and violence, etc. But in my drunken focus I heard in it trap/drill-as-horrorcore; cartoonish violence and swaggy nihilism pitched as horrifying reality.
