i look at lyrics to tracks like 'savage' they are more economical w/ fewer wasted words, right to the point

they both serve to create different effects obv but i find one to be a more efficient use of language than the other

lil herb will never make an album as good as finally rich, i feel confident in saying that

never been a backpacker but there's still street rappers I'll never "get" I guess

fabioland was super bland and unmemorable to me. would rather listen to keef, though not cause i think he's more talented.

Weird how non-enthused the reaction to Lil Herb is. The first 3 tracks or so are a bit dull, but really picks up after that. Who knows how he'll develop, maybe nowhere interesting, but it's still his first tape after all.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enthused and like the tape. It sounds to me though like a talented kid who hasn't figured out exactly how he wants his art to sound or whose heart isn't fully in it yet to me.

I never said anything about who had more talent as if that's even quantifiable either, but keef has applied his in more effective ways so far, IMO

Ehh that's how it always is, any kind of "weird" angle gets instant traction w/ some crowds. And tbf Keef got the weird tag a little more than a lot of other guys.

1 he's on every track and does like every hook? How is he "not present"

2 saying he would be like 07 Wayne is so weird, he's clearly evolved his own style

as much as you flipped for the last Em record just off of technique and internal rhyming, you should check for Los, the quality of his tapes is never quite where i want it to be but of the young guys out there he's really one of the best for that kind of showboating

what do you bros think about kevin gates?

Gates can flat out rhyme, lots of great tracks on the new tape ("Movie," "Wish I Had It"), but there's some violent misogyny on "Posed to Be in Love" which is very distracting and somewhat out of character.

Gates is one of the better artists to rise up over the last couple years.

he seems like a melancholy, down-to-earth dude in interviews.

he's pretty open about his depression and how shitty he can be iirc

While riding home drunk on the subway last night, I found The Devil's Violence to be really affecting. It seemed a bit too on the nose when I first listened to it -- rapping under the name The Devil, calling the mixtape Violence and filling it with blasts of noise, news reports about death and violence, etc. But in my drunken focus I heard in it trap/drill-as-horrorcore; cartoonish violence and swaggy nihilism pitched as horrifying reality.
