yeah it's just a huge cliché at this point - i'm disappointed in it on two levels, one the racist tropes it plays into and two what a tired concept it is anyway. i don't get the impression she's trying to ~make a point~ which lessens the offensiveness slightly but makes it barely worth any interest. how hard is it to do a video that doesn't play up to clichés and stereotypes, good god

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 April 2014 16:33 (twelve years ago)

The worst part about this is that it was a totally unforced error. The actual song (which is really good!) doesn't in any way suggest this video. As much as she represents this as part of her grand vision, I can only imagine the record execs sitting around trying to come up with ideas that were "edgy".

nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Thursday, 17 April 2014 18:06 (twelve years ago)

whenever I see videos like this I always imagine Bruno sitting in the director's chair

Juelz Fantano (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 17 April 2014 18:21 (twelve years ago)

the actual song suggests an entirely different sort of video cliche

katherine, Thursday, 17 April 2014 18:28 (twelve years ago)

wow she's still going on about it on facebook

it's like talking to a fan who is calling you a racist

I don’t know what we could have done differently other than cast all white dancers

That is the only other possible music video idea you could come up with?

▴▲ ▴TH3CR()$BY$H()W▴▲ ▴ (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 April 2014 17:45 (twelve years ago)

Wow that interview/article is super pandering and strawmanny.

▴▲ ▴TH3CR()$BY$H()W▴▲ ▴ (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 April 2014 17:46 (twelve years ago)

You can’t really do anything daring without people lashing out at you and creating meaning when there is none.

what's daring about it if there is no meaning?

nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Friday, 18 April 2014 18:05 (twelve years ago)

Apparently the real meaning of the video is addressing the 'controversy' over her and her boyfriend being busted for drugs last year. Not sure what is controversial about that (other than if any of the dancers in her new video were busted they probably would still be in jail right now).

▴▲ ▴TH3CR()$BY$H()W▴▲ ▴ (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 April 2014 18:25 (twelve years ago)

the real meaning of the video is Sky Ferreria dancing in front of the logo of some clothing company

I think people are sort of bored on the internet and waiting around to be offended. I think that people look to find something to find wrong or racist.

wow her director is an enormous moron, the sooner she stops working with him the better

dyl, Friday, 18 April 2014 19:48 (twelve years ago)

also lol at talking about how much empathy he has for what miley "went through" like he is a victim here

dyl, Friday, 18 April 2014 19:53 (twelve years ago)

She's been a friend of Terry Richardson for years, recorded a song by Ryan Tedder, and dates the goober junkie from DIIV. She may have given some smart interviews in the past, but let's stop pretending she's on top of things.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 April 2014 19:53 (twelve years ago)

Kind of wonder if they did that interview before they released the video.

▴▲ ▴TH3CR()$BY$H()W▴▲ ▴ (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:57 (twelve years ago)

The Ryan Tedder thing is such a random bit of info to include.

Greer, Friday, 18 April 2014 19:57 (twelve years ago)

Not when you hate Ryan Tedder like I hate Ryan Tedder.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 April 2014 19:58 (twelve years ago)

some people in the entertainment industry are just profoundly stupid. smh.

espring (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2014 20:18 (twelve years ago)

It seems pretty clear that neither of them even grasps what someone might find offensive about the video

nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Friday, 18 April 2014 20:18 (twelve years ago)

ah, youtube comments

"If you think the video is racist, you should just go and literally blame yourself for thinking that way. Do some research before saying some crap. If they were white, no one would give two shits."

also putting aside the race stuff this video is quite bad, the editing (especially the editing—what a mess), the slo-mo cinematography, ferreira screaming into the lens, the staging, the line readings, everything. it's kind of incomprehensible what the director was going for.

espring (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2014 20:27 (twelve years ago)

whole thing is a mess

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Friday, 18 April 2014 20:34 (twelve years ago)

this is disheartening because a video for this song deserved to be a triumph, not bait for thinkpieces. the "cute white girl hangs out with a gang / in the ghetto LOL" is not a new trope, but i'm glad it's being called out. to me the issue seems to be tied as much to class as race, but perhaps in america (disclaimer: not american, never been there) separation between the two is often invisible.

all is fair in love and womp (monotony), Saturday, 19 April 2014 09:02 (twelve years ago)

Generally, in America if someone says something isn't about race, it's totally about race

America doesn't think about class because we are delusional

Week-late OTM to this: people seem to think that being called a racist for anything short of burning a cross in a black family's front lawn is a grave injustice.

These things always end up with: I don't consider myself a racist and hate racism and have friends of many races therefore nothing I do can be considered racist in any way, end of discussion, byeeee. The idea that racism is so pernicious because it can be subconscious and doesn't only apply to skinheads with swastika tattoos just doesn't figure.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 11:49 (twelve years ago)
