Just found Pomplamoose is coming to the Beachland in Cleveland on Sept. 19. The temptation to go ironically is great.

An odd comparison just came to me: the deconstructed synth-pop covers with deadpan female vocals thing that Pomplamoose traffic in reminded me of Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin.

No matter how much time and effort they put into their videos they still have no charisma at all.

I don't know why all music videos don't end with two minutes of the artists just straight-up talking into the camera thanking people and plugging their tour dates.

While I don't exactly *like* them, in the sense that I never find myself actively wanting to listen to them other than in the context of "what the fuck are they up to this time," they are kind of ingenious. I can't help but admire them a little in spite of all their insufferability.

I mean honestly if everything they did wasn't so completely consumed by forced, painful smirkiness, they could be good imo.

She has a certain way of looking at the camera which is unaccountably irritating. Without that, they'd just be innocuous.

Actually I find the guy's goofball antics to be even more annoying. But those 'tudes bleed a little into the music too.

They still have this giddy freshmen staying up too late in the dorm lounge thing that I wish they would grow out of. I really think musically they are amazing at times, and very clever with their videos and such.

I mean, it's not like I would buy their records, but over the years I've grown to look forward to this thread getting bumped. I find them irritating in many ways, but it's a very pleasant form of irritation.

I like the music he makes in that video, but she is as irritating as ever.

These two make the current wave of indietronica (i.e. "Hip™ for basics") being discussed in the "high-selling singles" thread seem gritty and likable and REAL

when they weren't twee-ifying r&b, they weren't bad live

they're a reminder that you can be in some sense objectively talented and also sorta terrible.

Recording everything live in a little room like that is an absolute nightmare. The biggest problem is that the drums end up in *everything*. I'm guessing that most of the drum sound you hear in that track is actually bleed being picked up in other mics - if they turned the drum mics up it'd overwhelm everything.

I tried to do what they did (live band in a small room with a camera on the wall, not sultry retro pastiche) and we had to put big bits of carpet off-cuts on the drums to deaden them. Did interesting things to the cymbals...
