I had a lot of trouble getting into the stuff like Blackalicious, but I remember loving Dead Prez cuz they actually had some beats that went hard. loved The Coup (and still do).

I remember when I first found a hip hop message board-- summer of 1995 I believe--and the ideological divide that later became backpacker/mainstream was already there--there was disdain for most West Coast music (aside from Hiero) and most gangsta rap (including 2Pac and Scarface) and much love for East Coast crews (Native Tongues, DITC, Wu-Tang, Bootcamp) as well as the Roots and Organized Konfusion. There were cries of betrayal when It Was Written and Life After Death came out.
