i cringe every time R's dad runs to the press with more soundbites

yeah i reeeeeeeeeally hope this doesn't end up like britney and her fam or the simpson's or something with rihanna's dad communicating to her via tmz

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 March 2009 03:11 (fifteen years ago) link

this thing is so fucked

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 March 2009 03:12 (fifteen years ago) link

i had the impression that rihanna wasn't that close to her dad in the first place, but really all his comments seem so far sincere and not really improper or inappropriate

lex pretend, Friday, 6 March 2009 03:14 (fifteen years ago) link

the depth of the "so fucked" is why I seriously doubt he'll stage a massive comeback. If we had pictures of Whitney's face that banged up, Bobby Brown wouldn't even be on some damn CMT reality show.

da croupier, Friday, 6 March 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I hope you are right.

I don't think I own any music by any rapists, child molesters or wife beaters. And I'm not rushing out to put money in the pocket of any, anytime soon either. That's what illegal downloading was made for.

eboue died for somebody's sins but not mines (a hoy hoy), Friday, 6 March 2009 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link

there's not really any way to know how many rapists/etc. are in your record collection. but that's just one of the reasons it's pointless to try and take a stand on that kind of thing.

i do agree, though, that downloading means it's never been easier to enjoy the music without 'supporting' an artist who you don't like as a person, for better or worse.

make me fuckyermother (some dude), Friday, 6 March 2009 18:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Some of the greatest music ever has been made by rapists, child molestors and wife beaters. You are missing out. That said I can't disagree with the desire not enrich them.

Alex in SF, Friday, 6 March 2009 18:04 (fifteen years ago) link

a hoy hoy does not own James Brown?

I don't actually! I have a nicked from a friend copy of Live At The Apollo tho. Taking a stand (by breaking one of the ten commandments) since 2009. (Also ignorant enough to not know James Brown was a sex offender of some kind.) :)

eboue died for somebody's sins but not mines (a hoy hoy), Friday, 6 March 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago) link

by the way the whole "well im sure we all own records by sex offenders etc" argument is retarded and just downright shitty. it's a stupid excuse, and there's nothing wrong with saying "fuck this guy" and not wanting to support him monetarily in the future and hoping people in suits choose to do the same. and i resent being told otherwise, mostly becuase im not an idiot and am completely aware of the fact that people are forgiven eventually and i just dont want to have to feel conflicted about hating this douche

moonship journey to 51 (k3vin k.), Friday, 6 March 2009 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Who said there is anything wrong with saying fuck this guy and not buying his records? All we were pointing out was that there are plenty of people who have done plenty of unpleasant things and they still get radio play and record deals and people still buy their records (people like me, for example.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 6 March 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

well i'm glad you've still found success despite your public atrocities ;)

sorry i was just venting anyway

moonship journey to 51 (k3vin k.), Friday, 6 March 2009 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Venting at a non-existent strawman is a public atrocity.

ilxor, Saturday, 7 March 2009 22:25 (fifteen years ago) link

It may take a year or two (or more or even more than that if he goes to jail) but Chris Brown is a very nice looking guy with a small modicum of talent. It is not beyond impossible to believe that he could reinvent/repackage himself to a forgiving public.

gospel album.
"WTF?" duet with Rhianna about "how hard love is" on the followup album that all the kids love and all the critics rush to write articles about.
presto.

my girl and i spent an hour or so listening to the eponymous album and Exclusive and it's amazing how often he talks about fighting and girl you can't get away and whatever. Really colors going back to them.
That said, they're pretty damn good albums.

Instead of R Kelly and MJ, shouldn't the closest comparison be Ike Turner?

I think you're supposed to feel bad for him! It's a ballsy track.

Its funny how it twists the pleading tone of R&B boy-ballads

Plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:27 (fifteen years ago) link

you have to have an R. Kelly level of lack of self-awareness to start your sorry-for-hitting-you-girl track with 'feels like someone dropped a ton of bricks on my stomach'

ILM is a gross place full of coersion and sexual manipulation (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm gonna err on the side of this being an old track, cuz they'd have to have some fuckin balls to try and paint him as the victim and not put some ish along the lines of "sorry, blame it on me" out. i'm sure ppl will jump on the "umbrella" line but it's a pretty obvious metaphor for a teenpop r&b song that it's impossible to tell if it's definitive or not. either way this song is pretty dope

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:35 (fifteen years ago) link

you might be right about that; I suppose it's a song he made about rhianna from before this all went down. is this some sort of radio release or just something that's getting blog exposure?

ILM is a gross place full of coersion and sexual manipulation (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:37 (fifteen years ago) link

if this is real i think it's smart for his ppl to "leak" an apology song (or whatever the hell this is) instead of putting out a song that's an OFFICIAL STATEMENT. on the other hand it would be a good move for them to put his apology song on itunes and then agree to donate 100% of the proceeds to a foundation for battered women or something.

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I think it's way too early from a PR perspective for him to associate his name with ANYTHING battered, fish and chicken inclusive. Dude gotta lay low for awhile.

ILM is a gross place full of coersion and sexual manipulation (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:38 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah - keeping his name in people's minds for whatever reason will just ensure that they won't forget shit

I think the vanilla part is irrelevant ... plenty of pop stars (e.g. Britney Spears) originally had their careers rooted in portraying a squeaky clean image. Add me to the list of people who think that CB's comeback + redemption is inevitable.

after a half second of googling i've found lyric sites for "Pain To Go Away" from 2008, so no, it's not a legit apology song

yesterday i stood at a newsstand looking at all the magazine covers trying to figure out exactly what's going on between these two and couldn't get it straight. the tabloids (on covers alone) were telling 20 different stories. what's the deal?

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

the deal is there's been very little solid info so it's open season on making shit up?

Chris Brown and Rihanna are undergoing extensive plastic surgery/gender reassignment so that they actually become each other, after which they will get married and adopt 4 of Octomom's newborns.

coming back to this for the hell of it -- pretty much every teen idol goes through some 'loss of innocence' type of scandal, but the when and the how makes all the difference...Britney's got pretty crazy eventually, but it still happened very gradually over several years/albums...at the age and career stage Chris and Rihanna are at right now, Justin and Britney hadn't even gone through their breakup/songs about each other phase yet. and Justin's big PR sin during that was i guess insinuating that she gave him blowjobs? whole different ballgame.
