the only two songs i voted for in the top ten were #1 and #2, that turned out nicely
both songs perfect lyrically

Any of my top four tracks could've easily been my #1, but I ultimately went with the song that I first heard at age 18, but didn't really appreciate until I was well into my thirties.

a worthy number 1. it's such an immaculately paced song, fluid and constant like a moving spectacle. sits on a comfortable groove for seven-odd minutes, but it could go on longer and i wouldn't mind.
It's also the song where I miss Roger Nichols' participation on Aja the most.

Every track on the first seven albums got at least two votes, except for "East St. Louis Toodle-oo" and "Chain Lightning," which got one vote apiece.
So I have the distinction of being the strongest supporter of the least-liked track of the Steely Dan '70-'80s era. My vote was the lone one for "Chain Lightning."
(Remember, least-liked is not the same as most-disliked.)
― Set the Ctrl-Alt-Del for the heart of the sun (SlimAndSlam), Monday, 7 April 2014 01:47 (twelve years ago)
SlimAndSlam, can you explain the appeal of Chain Lightning to the rest of us? (I like Chain Lightning but I guess it feels like one of their least essential tracks to me)

Re: Chain Lightning:
Two reasons:
1. I'm a sucker for variations on the twelve-bar blues, and that song has one of the most off-kilter takes on that particular form.
2. Those harmonies!
― Set the Ctrl-Alt-Del for the heart of the sun (SlimAndSlam), Monday, 7 April 2014 01:56 (twelve years ago)
