Ah ILX, never disappoints

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 6 April 2014 17:57 (ten years ago) link

hell of a song, but it's one of the very few I'm burned out on....this spot feels about right to me, actually.
your #1, Iago?

Swag Heathen (theStalePrince), Sunday, 6 April 2014 17:58 (ten years ago) link

I listened to this a bunch last night. It is really good. I also realized that the beginning reminds me of Fastball's "Out of My Head", which was played to death on my hometown radio station in the late nineties.

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:00 (ten years ago) link

I feel like getting all rock-crit adjectival for that cheeze keyboard solo by Fagen.....a "knowing" solo? an "insinuating" solo? "insinuatingly knowing"??

Swag Heathen (theStalePrince), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:02 (ten years ago) link

it's like he's mocking Palmer's vocal right behind him.

Ha, I know, I can't shut up! I don't not like any SD songs, was just listening to this and loved it--#12 just blows my mind is all. This poll feels very....fraught, but in a good way

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:04 (ten years ago) link

Really love the vocal on Dirty Work.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:04 (ten years ago) link

somebody should link the "Dirty Work" scene from "American Hustle"....

Swag Heathen (theStalePrince), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:13 (ten years ago) link

"Dirty Work" was my only vote from the debut. the sax's mocking too, could segue nicely into "Yakety Sax"

Euler, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:13 (ten years ago) link

it was not released as a single but sure does look like it was:

got much closer than i imagined it would!

some dude, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:32 (ten years ago) link

for years I would hear the opening bars and change the station, disgusted by Santana.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:35 (ten years ago) link

shit, I have 7 of the top 10, so I know the other 3......only one big surprise, I'd say--well, maybe two.
no spoilers, not gonna be that guy.....

Swag Heathen (theStalePrince), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:35 (ten years ago) link

thanks

Bee OK, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:38 (ten years ago) link

still love this song. think i might have heard it more than any other Dan song. still turn it way up when it's on.

Bee OK, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:38 (ten years ago) link

love how Fagen goes up and down the melodic scale, preparing us for that killer chorus

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:40 (ten years ago) link

we talked about this in the noms thread iirc but this is def the most covered 'dan track right?

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:40 (ten years ago) link

lord knows you've got to change

pplains, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:41 (ten years ago) link

everything i wanted to place has pretty much placed by now, so i'm gonna pour a margarita out for "everything must go" which i was hoping would at least hit the top 50 somewhere

I think Everything Must Go just suffers from lack of consensus about the best tracks, even to the minor degree than TAN had "Jack of Speed"

some dude, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:44 (ten years ago) link

"Do It Again" is one of those rare heard-it-a-million-times songs that I have never really grown tired of. It was the song that made me a Steely Dan fan back in '72 (I've never been really fond of "Reelin' in the Years" and didn't vote for that one).

Sandy, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:46 (ten years ago) link

I thought "Things I Miss The Most" might have had a shot, but it's not like any bum tracks made the cut over it

Euler, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:47 (ten years ago) link

agh but the title track is such a great encapsulation of their aesthetic, and a perfect cap to their career if they never make another record together

xxpost

Agreed, Brad. Let's jump into that pool of margaritas.

the 12" never leaves my record bag. always gets a good response when playing it out.

1973: "Do It Again" (3:57 edit) (B-side: "Fire in the Hole")
Label: ABC 11338
Chart: US Pop 6

The single version differed from the album version, shortening the intro, outro and two instrumental sections of the song.

Released in 1972, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 18, 1972, and reached number 6 on the US charts in 1973, making it Steely Dan's second highest charting single.

On the 1972 release, the song was credited as "Trad" (for traditional), although it was actually written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.

Bee OK, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:53 (ten years ago) link

so no debut in the top 10. shame. Do It Again is indeed immortal

g simmel, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:59 (ten years ago) link

Hard to believe this is their first song, really. Talk about starting on a high note.

when i was at first tabulating votes, this song was missing in action. i was beginning to think ILM had lost it and was cheering whenever it showed up on a ballot. as you can see it did alright for itself when everything was tabulated.
