emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:15 (twelve years ago)

this was my #5, great song.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:16 (twelve years ago)

my #10; highlights are the exhortations to "you better bring it on home" and to "bring it back, bring it back now" as the song winds down; the Dan's version of getting lost in the boogie

Euler, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:22 (twelve years ago)

great song but missed my ballot.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:32 (twelve years ago)

how's life, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:47 (twelve years ago)

totally surprised that Gaucho isn't higher. it wasn't on my ballot but i know there are some serious partisans on this board.

how's life, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:48 (twelve years ago)

"gaucho" is a perfect song

i forgot to vote for it

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:49 (twelve years ago)

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:49 (twelve years ago)

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:53 (twelve years ago)

Gaucho is great! Not on my ballot.

weatheringdaleson, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:55 (twelve years ago)

totally surprised that Gaucho isn't higher. it wasn't on my ballot but i know there are some serious partisans on this board.

The lyrics list at the top features at least four different lines from the song.

voodoo chili, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:55 (twelve years ago)

#9. I thought this was a #1 contender...

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:55 (twelve years ago)

love how the synths seem to microwave the chorus

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:58 (twelve years ago)

The outro is marvelous. The song is a thing of beauty.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:02 (twelve years ago)

also love the percussive guitar in the chorus, damn

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:02 (twelve years ago)

Would you care to explaiiiiiiiinn

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:05 (twelve years ago)

so i have been getting this info from here: http://www.steelydandictionary.com/

Custerdome: A fictional skyscraper containing the luxury apartment where the song's plot unfolds. Editor's note: I decided to make an exception to my usual "no fictional words" rule and include this in the dictionary for two reasons: A) It's the word I get asked about most frequently by site visitors; and B) Temporarily abandoning their reticence to discuss lyric interpretations, Becker and Fagen kindly explained its exact meaning during an interview: "It exists only in our collective imagination. In the Steely Dan lexicon it serves as an archetype of a building that houses great corporations..."

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:07 (twelve years ago)

Gaucho: A South American cowboy. Originating from the pampas in Argentina, gauchos were familiar figures in the 18th/19th centuries, and typically were daring and skillful horsemen and plainsmen. Immortalised on film thanks to the 1927 Douglas Fairbanks swashbuckling epic The Gaucho.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:08 (twelve years ago)

i might emerge from this poll with the royal scam as my new favorite LP

yaaaaay

i never thought "Reelin'" would rank lower than "Do It Again" and "Dirty Work," weird

some dude, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:13 (twelve years ago)

One of my best friends we nicknamed the Gaucho cuz of his ridiculous clothes and ways with women

shine up the battle apple

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:26 (twelve years ago)

shocked that this is only 19, was my number 4.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:27 (twelve years ago)

RAW FLAME, LIVE WIRE!

voodoo chili, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:28 (twelve years ago)

so few of SD's album closers feel like closing tracks to me. like almost everything besides "King Of The World," "Royal Scam" and "Third World Man." i kind of respect that, though, gives the albums an interesting flow.

some dude, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:28 (twelve years ago)

My No. 1. For this week anyway.

pplains, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:29 (twelve years ago)

xp

I agree, "Home at Last" would probably bee the most traditional closer for Aja

voodoo chili, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:29 (twelve years ago)

Lot of talk about how Steely Dan has stood up to repeated listens, except for maybe Reelin' In the Years. I agree, but I also worked for a classic rock station for eleven years. "Josie" is the only song of theirs that I never turn off, and keep in mind that I'll leave the other ones on too nine out of ten times.

pplains, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:31 (twelve years ago)

pplains, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:34 (twelve years ago)

TOO LOW! but then i recall it got stiffed in the AJA poll.

piscesx, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:35 (twelve years ago)

still surprised "Josie" got released as a single; record companies be taking lessons from the success of Rumours.

Chart: US Pop 26

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:38 (twelve years ago)

I think I'm coming around to "Third World Man," but for me both Aja and Gaucho seem to drop off a little with the last two tracks. I like "Josie," but it's probably their most forgettable single.

thewufs, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:46 (twelve years ago)

Damn, how did I not vote for "Josie." Probably the one I regret leaving off the ballot most.

voodoo chili, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:47 (twelve years ago)

Definitely can't argue with these two being in the top 20

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:49 (twelve years ago)

one of my favorite fagen vocals

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:49 (twelve years ago)

Was out earlier, but "Caves of Altamira" was my #2. Absolutely love that song, and have since I first heard it at age 5 1/2 in 1978 when my older cousin spent the summer with us. She was a huge Steely Dan fan, and she brought with her all their albums.

Yay Pretzel Logic, I was getting worried that it wouldn't make it.
