Fagen doesn't bother distinguishing reporting from contempt.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 April 2014 20:33 (ten years ago) link

somehow i still find the solo thrilling

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 April 2014 20:35 (ten years ago) link

victim of overplay, maybe, but this has not held up as well as the other singles

Brad C., Saturday, 5 April 2014 20:38 (ten years ago) link

xps I've been to Santillana del Mar, and now feel like an idiot for not having known there were caves there. The village is pretty enough I guess. Sounds like I'd've'd trouble getting a ticket anyway.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 5 April 2014 20:41 (ten years ago) link

Reelin' is still great.

weatheringdaleson, Saturday, 5 April 2014 20:42 (ten years ago) link

Love it, then and now.

clemenza, Saturday, 5 April 2014 20:43 (ten years ago) link

I drove through Cantabria last summer thinking we'd stop at the caves, but like Lascaux you can't see the real cave anymore, only a replica. think the Dan would appreciate that

Euler, Saturday, 5 April 2014 20:44 (ten years ago) link

only the Dan would say that

this was my #5, great song.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:16 (ten years ago) link

my #10; highlights are the exhortations to "you better bring it on home" and to "bring it back, bring it back now" as the song winds down; the Dan's version of getting lost in the boogie

Euler, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:22 (ten years ago) link

great song but missed my ballot.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:32 (ten years ago) link

totally surprised that Gaucho isn't higher. it wasn't on my ballot but i know there are some serious partisans on this board.

The lyrics list at the top features at least four different lines from the song.

#9. I thought this was a #1 contender...

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:55 (ten years ago) link

love how the synths seem to microwave the chorus

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 April 2014 21:58 (ten years ago) link

The outro is marvelous. The song is a thing of beauty.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:02 (ten years ago) link

also love the percussive guitar in the chorus, damn

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:02 (ten years ago) link

Would you care to explaiiiiiiiinn

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:05 (ten years ago) link

so i have been getting this info from here: http://www.steelydandictionary.com/

Custerdome: A fictional skyscraper containing the luxury apartment where the song's plot unfolds. Editor's note: I decided to make an exception to my usual "no fictional words" rule and include this in the dictionary for two reasons: A) It's the word I get asked about most frequently by site visitors; and B) Temporarily abandoning their reticence to discuss lyric interpretations, Becker and Fagen kindly explained its exact meaning during an interview: "It exists only in our collective imagination. In the Steely Dan lexicon it serves as an archetype of a building that houses great corporations..."

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 22:07 (ten years ago) link

Gaucho: A South American cowboy. Originating from the pampas in Argentina, gauchos were familiar figures in the 18th/19th centuries, and typically were daring and skillful horsemen and plainsmen. Immortalised on film thanks to the 1927 Douglas Fairbanks swashbuckling epic The Gaucho.
