Stewart Mason of AllMusic says that "Time Out of Mind" is "a barely veiled song about heroin, specifically a young man's first experience with the drug at the hands of a pretentious, pseudo-religious crank talking of 'chasing the dragon' with the 'mystical sphere direct from Lhasa.'"

Fagen and Becker hired Mark Knopfler to play the guitar solo on "Time Out of Mind" after hearing him play on Dire Straits' hit single "Sultans of Swing." Several hours of Knopfler's playing were recorded at the session, but his contributions as heard on the record are limited to a matter of seconds.

knopfler is playing the whole time in the right channel. I mean the song is only 4 minutes, but he plays on a lot of it.

Voted for "Night By Night" pretty highly, sounds like the theme to a lost 70s cop drama.

It's the clavinet. I get Fagen's complaints that it's not fully realized. Even the lyrics in the chorus are more general than you'd expect.

time out of mind was my #3 but i think i ranked it too low

i rated damn near everything on my ballot too low. 'time out of mind' is the cvs radio steely dan fave around here. LOVE IT.

Somewhere on ILM there is a TOOM thread with a (now blocked) youtube clip of some mustachioed shirtless dirtbag chopping lines while bopping and miming along to TOOM. It was my intro to the song and it was kind of creepy and wrong and perfect.

steely dan in the wild: just watched my DVR copy of david letterman's retirement announcement. when they cut to commercial right after he made the announcement, the band played "reelin' in the years."

my ballot was sucked dry in this last run: Rose Darling, Razor Boy, Night By Night, Only A Fool Would Say That and Bodhisattva

those are some of the most important songs ever to me personally so naturally they are all TOO LOW!
