Even when I don't like a SD song, there is usually something going on that I can latch on to and enjoy...like the guitar parts obv.

Yeah, I had no idea at all people rated this so highly, I don't think it was mentioned at all on the voting thread? (can't remember ever hearing any opinion about it anywhere to be honest, positive or negative)

Pretzel Logic was my first Dan LP and though my esteem for it dwindled as i familiarized myself with the other albums, "Night By Night" is one song that remains awesome to me, so huge-sounding.

i am holding the mystical sphere
it's direct from lhasa
where people are rolling in the snow
far from the world we know

(not my #1)

Stewart Mason of AllMusic says that "Time Out of Mind" is "a barely veiled song about heroin, specifically a young man's first experience with the drug at the hands of a pretentious, pseudo-religious crank talking of 'chasing the dragon' with the 'mystical sphere direct from Lhasa.'"

Fagen and Becker hired Mark Knopfler to play the guitar solo on "Time Out of Mind" after hearing him play on Dire Straits' hit single "Sultans of Swing." Several hours of Knopfler's playing were recorded at the session, but his contributions as heard on the record are limited to a matter of seconds.

just once i want someone to write a non-metaphorical song about chasing an actual dragon

knopfler is playing the whole time in the right channel. I mean the song is only 4 minutes, but he plays on a lot of it.

this song is awesome, and i possibly made a big mistake in not voting for it over babylon sisters.

oops, you did!

Love the use of space in "Time Out of Mind"

My favorite song on Gaucho. Better than Billie Jean.

Man you ever listen to Sonata Arctica et al

My favorite song on Gaucho. Better than Billie Jean.

― How dare you tarnish the reputation of Turturro's yodel (Shakey Mo Collier),

always disliked Fagen's vocal on "P.Y.T."

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 April 2014 01:47 (ten years ago) link

Voted for "Night By Night" pretty highly, sounds like the theme to a lost 70s cop drama.

voodoo chili, Saturday, 5 April 2014 01:52 (ten years ago) link

It's the clavinet. I get Fagen's complaints that it's not fully realized. Even the lyrics in the chorus are more general than you'd expect.

time out of mind was my #3 but i think i ranked it too low

christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 5 April 2014 02:16 (ten years ago) link

i rated damn near everything on my ballot too low. 'time out of mind' is the cvs radio steely dan fave around here. LOVE IT.

balls, Saturday, 5 April 2014 02:41 (ten years ago) link

Had TOOM in my top 12

Such a tune but lacks the gravitas of the rest of Gaucho imo

, Saturday, 5 April 2014 02:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah, it was one of the few from Gaucho that missed my ballot.

i see that we are back....

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 02:49 (ten years ago) link

few three

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 02:50 (ten years ago) link

Somewhere on ILM there is a TOOM thread with a (now blocked) youtube clip of some mustachioed shirtless dirtbag chopping lines while bopping and miming along to TOOM. It was my intro to the song and it was kind of creepy and wrong and perfect.

Just checking in. Nice to see so much love for the Godlike genius guitar solo on Your Gold Teeth II.

What will be the Steely Dan Sway? IE non-hit album track that ends up placing shockingly high?

i have a hunch (it's my #1) but don't want to jinx it

Play some jazzy octaves. I will eat em up.

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 5 April 2014 03:06 (ten years ago) link

One of the best hippie putdown songs. Better than Okie From Muskogee.

This probably should have been my top track from CBAT, instead it was Midnite Cruiser (just one spot up)

, Saturday, 5 April 2014 03:13 (ten years ago) link

great, great song however not sure if it would make my Top 40.

hmm, how much should i say. this poll will actually have some major surprises.

it is looking like now that this won't end until Sunday, work on Monday otherwise would go that route.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 03:33 (ten years ago) link

do you want any more or should i stop? strange night with the board shutdown ect.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 April 2014 03:49 (ten years ago) link

a couple more would be awesome!

steely dan in the wild: just watched my DVR copy of david letterman's retirement announcement. when they cut to commercial right after he made the announcement, the band played "reelin' in the years."

fact checking cuz, Saturday, 5 April 2014 05:44 (ten years ago) link

caves of altamira better be the sway of this poll with deacon blues being the echoes.

my ballot was sucked dry in this last run: Rose Darling, Razor Boy, Night By Night, Only A Fool Would Say That and Bodhisattva

those are some of the most important songs ever to me personally so naturally they are all TOO LOW!

g simmel, Saturday, 5 April 2014 10:46 (ten years ago) link

my favorite Dave/Dan moment -- once they performed on the show and Fagen's keyboard had a big "SD" logo on the front, and Letterman referred to them as "The Sam Donaldson Orchestra"

some dude, Saturday, 5 April 2014 10:49 (ten years ago) link

'Night By Night' and 'Caves Of Altamira' were both near the top of my poll...sheer bloody dan

i've been meaning to make a playlist of just SD tracks with horn sections, i love that stuff
