tobacco they grow in peking
in the year of the locust
you'll see a sad thing
even cathy berberian knows
there's one roulade she can't sing
dumb luck my friend
won't suck me in this time

I like how Brad's reminding me that Becker-Fagen write good lyrics.

Finally looked up Cathy Berberian today. I was sort of hoping that it was a made up name.

lol i just figured i'm not going to have much to say coherently about any of these songs, might as well post my favorite lyric from each

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 4 April 2014 21:01 (ten years ago) link

it's very easy to picture fagen at a club singing those warnings to the grifter and wondering if she risks it all. it could be in a musical.

that or the electric piano solo anyway

lots of time sunning at Biscayne Bay for Fagen in '76, evidently

col, Friday, 4 April 2014 21:19 (ten years ago) link

The studio where the Bee Gees, the Mac, and the Eagles recorded their blockbusters is on Biscayne Boulevard.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 April 2014 21:22 (ten years ago) link

fagen goes for the back pocket pose in the studio (here and CTE back). front pocket in the outside world (greatest hits).

great song. Voted for the other "gold teeth" though.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 4 April 2014 21:39 (ten years ago) link

so both "Your Gold Teeth" were right next to each other up until the last few ballots were counted. it was going to be part I then part II but they kept switching positions.

Bee OK, Friday, 4 April 2014 21:52 (ten years ago) link

"Gold Teeth II:" great guitar solo or GREATEST guitar solo?

J. Sam, Friday, 4 April 2014 21:58 (ten years ago) link

My number 1! The guitar solo is too much.

cheeseburger, Friday, 4 April 2014 21:59 (ten years ago) link

great song and great guitar solo. I love the volume swells, which I guess are from the volume knob on the guitar and not a pedal. I love that technique.

make sure to listen to the demo where Larry Carlton(?) lays down that solo for the first time, it is note for note what he did on the finished version....Fagen is shouting holy shit all through it, very funny

#4 for me. the vibes and that slide guitar lick he plays after "...comes and takes your fancy things away" do it for me.

Iago Galdston, Friday, 4 April 2014 23:20 (ten years ago) link

Fagen admitted this was a failed attempt at a hit (and it shows)

Iago Galdston, Friday, 4 April 2014 23:21 (ten years ago) link

this one was my very last add to my list and was put in at number 19.

Bee OK, Friday, 4 April 2014 23:21 (ten years ago) link

Even when I don't like a SD song, there is usually something going on that I can latch on to and enjoy...like the guitar parts obv.

Iago Galdston, Friday, 4 April 2014 23:27 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I had no idea at all people rated this so highly, I don't think it was mentioned at all on the voting thread? (can't remember ever hearing any opinion about it anywhere to be honest, positive or negative)

soref, Friday, 4 April 2014 23:28 (ten years ago) link

Pretzel Logic was my first Dan LP and though my esteem for it dwindled as i familiarized myself with the other albums, "Night By Night" is one song that remains awesome to me, so huge-sounding.
