I don't like it in Lady Marmalade. Love it here.

"Pearl" in my top ten.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 April 2014 11:15 (twelve years ago)

favorite time to sing along with Fagen mannerisms is "and if you heeear from myyy Louiiiiise"

some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 11:45 (twelve years ago)

I think Fagen being fun to sing along with is an underplayed aspect of/reason for Steely Dan's popularity

soref, Friday, 4 April 2014 11:52 (twelve years ago)

Just listening to CBAT and yeah think yr right there

let's talk Dan sampling. you've probably heard the De La and Kanye songs, but would you like to hear Freeway and Joe Budden rap over a hot loop of the "Royal Scam" outro?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd4oJsO5_jk

my Baltimore homie Cex did an amazing album called Dannibal a few years ago comprised entirely of tiny moments from SD songs blown up into a hazy house of mirrors. the whole thing is pretty easy to find for DL but here you can stream tracks that sample "The Boston Rag" and "My Rival":

They are pretty much my ideal karaoke band. I wish that "Gaucho" had been a more popular song because it is my dream to sing that one in a karaoke bar.

nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Friday, 4 April 2014 13:39 (twelve years ago)

Just getting caught up here, so apologies to comment on tracks that were way back in the results...

For some reason, I've always imagined that the rival in "My Rival" was Billy Joel.

Green Earrings might be my personal "too low", but I realize there are a lot of songs left and I may be feeling that way about many more.

nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Friday, 4 April 2014 13:41 (twelve years ago)

I'd like to see someone try karaoke Reelin' in the Years!

Iago Galdston, Friday, 4 April 2014 13:42 (twelve years ago)

they looked upon the promised land
where surely life was sweet
on the rising tide
to new york city
did they ride into the street

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 4 April 2014 13:44 (twelve years ago)

saxophone in "everyone's gone to the movies" is the creepiest and best thing

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 4 April 2014 13:44 (twelve years ago)

Iago: that's a tricky one! so many words and at such a fast pace, it's a tongue twister of a song! OTOH, it's very likely to be in a karaoke bar catalog.

Lots of standing around during guitar solos

voodoo chili, Friday, 4 April 2014 13:48 (twelve years ago)

some dude: you are exactly right, The Strange is the specific album I had in mind with that. Surely Anthony's Bar and Grill is owned by the guy from Movin' Out.

nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Friday, 4 April 2014 13:50 (twelve years ago)

Imagine Fagen singing "snoooooooooze"

45. The Fez

A dj in Chicago used to re-record vocals over songs to use as promos; to advertise the station's Chicago Bears broadcasts, he did "No, I'm never gonna do it without the Bears on."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 4 April 2014 13:55 (twelve years ago)

the Dan is the closest to filler-less any band ever got imo

Absolutely true. They're not my all-time favorite band or anything but it's unbelievable how few dud songs they have. I still haven't heard EMG but of the other eight albums the only song I dislike is "Negative Girl"

Vinnie, Friday, 4 April 2014 13:55 (twelve years ago)

i have found exactly one karaoke bar that had My Old School. one of the best karaoke nights of my life.

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Friday, 4 April 2014 14:54 (twelve years ago)

I think 'Brooklyn' comes closest maybe. I do have a fascination in general with songs that sound like they could fit on a band's previous or subsequent album.

yeah, i can see a bit of the same west coast singer-songwriter vibe in "brooklyn," and probably "only a fool would say that" too. but "pearl of the quarter" just completely owns that territory.

and i very much dig the voulezvoulezvoulezvous.

I've done this one at karaoke before. Super fun, but a bit awkward during the long-ass instrumental breaks. Or maybe I wasn't drunk enough at that point.

J. Sam, Friday, 4 April 2014 16:25 (twelve years ago)

"Deacon Blues" was a fun one for me, but I had the same issue with endless sax solos

nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Friday, 4 April 2014 16:32 (twelve years ago)

I've been wondering at work whether my colleagues can hear the Kid Charlemagne that's been playing in my head all day. It's so loud.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 April 2014 16:33 (twelve years ago)

this poll has been heavy on earworms ... yesterday it was Any Major Dude, this morning, yes, Kid Charlemagne

Yay! In my top 5. This track gets stuck in my head more than any SD track. Here's a great version that someone posted on the nom thread or something, by Burnt Sugar with Vernon Reid.
