hmm, don't get any particular west coast vibes from that one. though as soon as i hit send on the above, it did occur to me that "pearl" does sound very much of a piece with the first album, and i guess there is a bit of a west coast s/s thing hanging over the first album in general (along with a lot of other stuff). but the steel guitar in "pearl," the country-rock groove, the storytelling, the way fagen sings it, it all has a feel that i don't quite get from any other particular dan song.

I think 'Brooklyn' comes closest maybe. I do have a fascination in general with songs that sound like they could fit on a band's previous or subsequent album.

"Pearl" and "The Royal Scam" are both songs i adore but didn't quite have room for on my ballot, glad they got some love

some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 09:38 (ten years ago) link

Had Pearl at #6, seems to me like one of the few 'sincere' songs in the SD catalogue?

, Friday, 4 April 2014 09:54 (ten years ago) link

^^yes even if you h8 the voulezvoulezvoulezvous, the pedal steel + chorus own

yuoowemeone, Friday, 4 April 2014 10:15 (ten years ago) link

i really dig the voulezvoulezvoulezvous. makes the song for me, especially the way in which it's sung

charlie h, Friday, 4 April 2014 10:48 (ten years ago) link

have had two tracks place so far: Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More and Pearl of the Quarter. both of them feature some of my favourite lyrics in the realm of Dan.

charlie h, Friday, 4 April 2014 10:53 (ten years ago) link

i also dig voulezvoulezvoulezvous, but I gather some ppl aren't fond

yuoowemeone, Friday, 4 April 2014 11:04 (ten years ago) link

I don't like it in Lady Marmalade. Love it here.

"Pearl" in my top ten.

favorite time to sing along with Fagen mannerisms is "and if you heeear from myyy Louiiiiise"

some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 11:45 (ten years ago) link

I think Fagen being fun to sing along with is an underplayed aspect of/reason for Steely Dan's popularity

let's talk Dan sampling. you've probably heard the De La and Kanye songs, but would you like to hear Freeway and Joe Budden rap over a hot loop of the "Royal Scam" outro?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd4oJsO5_jk

my Baltimore homie Cex did an amazing album called Dannibal a few years ago comprised entirely of tiny moments from SD songs blown up into a hazy house of mirrors. the whole thing is pretty easy to find for DL but here you can stream tracks that sample "The Boston Rag" and "My Rival":

They are pretty much my ideal karaoke band. I wish that "Gaucho" had been a more popular song because it is my dream to sing that one in a karaoke bar.

Just getting caught up here, so apologies to comment on tracks that were way back in the results...

For some reason, I've always imagined that the rival in "My Rival" was Billy Joel.

Green Earrings might be my personal "too low", but I realize there are a lot of songs left and I may be feeling that way about many more.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 4 April 2014 13:44 (ten years ago) link

Iago: that's a tricky one! so many words and at such a fast pace, it's a tongue twister of a song! OTOH, it's very likely to be in a karaoke bar catalog.

Lots of standing around during guitar solos

some dude: you are exactly right, The Strange is the specific album I had in mind with that. Surely Anthony's Bar and Grill is owned by the guy from Movin' Out.

45. The Fez

A dj in Chicago used to re-record vocals over songs to use as promos; to advertise the station's Chicago Bears broadcasts, he did "No, I'm never gonna do it without the Bears on."

the Dan is the closest to filler-less any band ever got imo

Absolutely true. They're not my all-time favorite band or anything but it's unbelievable how few dud songs they have. I still haven't heard EMG but of the other eight albums the only song I dislike is "Negative Girl"

Vinnie, Friday, 4 April 2014 13:55 (ten years ago) link

i have found exactly one karaoke bar that had My Old School. one of the best karaoke nights of my life.

yeah, i can see a bit of the same west coast singer-songwriter vibe in "brooklyn," and probably "only a fool would say that" too. but "pearl of the quarter" just completely owns that territory.

and i very much dig the voulezvoulezvoulezvous.

I've done this one at karaoke before. Super fun, but a bit awkward during the long-ass instrumental breaks. Or maybe I wasn't drunk enough at that point.

"Deacon Blues" was a fun one for me, but I had the same issue with endless sax solos

I've been wondering at work whether my colleagues can hear the Kid Charlemagne that's been playing in my head all day. It's so loud.
