I suspect it could have totally worked on drunk northface girls somewhere.

if you are wearing a skirt with a northface jacket, i'm not interested in seeing your world.

relevant:

"I'm doing fine," says Dave Matthews, checking in from his Seattle home before kicking off his first South African tour November 30th. "I was stuck in traffic this morning." After a huge summer tour, the singer has been staying busy hanging out with family and working in the studio on his band's follow-up to last year's Away From the World. Matthews reveals he's teamed with producer Rob Cavallo and engineer Doug McKean, who both worked on 2009's Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King (the band worked with Steve Lillywhite on Away From the World). "I've been in the studio trying to get a couple of things ready for the band to go back in, having fun," Matthews says. "I'm just trying to come up with something that doesn't sound like the past."

He won't give too much away, but fans may already be familiar with some of the upcoming material. "There are some songs the band has been playing for a long time," he teases.* "And then whenever I start messing around in the studio, I start writing, so hopefully we can come up with something worth listening to."

DMB's sixth straight record to debut at Number One reunited the group with its Nineties producer Steve Lillywhite; the album's political entreaties made for some of 2012's best GOTV rock. But there's also a stormy introspection to these tricky, rolling jams. "Rooftop" is a drunken, vengeful breakup fantasy; on "The Riff," quiet romantic desperation gets run through Boyd Tinsley's jabbing violin lines; and when Matthews sings, "That's not a star, that's a satellite," on "Drunken Soldier," it's clear he's standing under an angry sky.

i'm starting to get a picture of dave matthews as this guy who checked out a book about satellites from the library in the 90s and smoked his first joint. now he walks around spreading the most basic or even incorrect information about them.

two months pass...

Reading through part of this thread and it strikes me how similar it is to the commentaries under any given article about Justin Bieber in Norwegian online papers these days. Except these comments are by people now in their 30s or 40s (mostly) while the ones raging about how great Justin Bieber is were in kindergarten in 2003. :)

one of my favorite DMB stories is the Pawtucket show in April 2002. he introduced the guest sax musician Ralph Dharel, and Dharel said "you really should have been a Ralph, Dave", and ever since then all of us on Dancing Nancies call Dave Ralph as an inside joke lol

Having gotten to know a lot of (former) frat dudes over the years, esp in law school, it computes to me perfectly well. To the extent there was a "profile" at all, it was not the aggro, alpha-male type you see in 80s movies, it was more of a mellow, straight-laced, don't-rock-the-boat kind of guy. Nice, risk-averse, usually not severely neurotic or suffering from low self esteem, but confident only up to a certain point.

Daaaaaaave

bonita pooleymoon (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 20:39 (ten years ago)

yeah maybe so. the guys I knew were mostly from northeastern colleges and maybe the frats there leaned a little more liberal than average

www.ramenclassaction.com (man alive), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 20:39 (ten years ago)

plus it's unchallenging mid-tempo stuff that undiscerning dudes can purport to be discerning about on the basis of, like, "musicianship."

dc, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 20:41 (ten years ago)

yessssss

also earnest John Mayer heads

flappy bird, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 20:43 (ten years ago)

I kind of like the break in the middle of WWYS, where the band drops out and it's just guitar, and then there's a sax solo. Freed from its context, I feel like it could mesh well into a good DJ set.

www.ramenclassaction.com (man alive), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 21:26 (ten years ago)

dated a jam-band guy in the late 90s so i've seen dave in all his splendor. not my most pitiable concert-going experience, which might be papa roach. tbh there are a number of contenders.

dc, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 21:32 (ten years ago)

I would see DMB 1000 times before sitting through another youth lagoon show
