So yes. I have a mission to win the ILX massive to the slow-jam nation. Watch out, because I'm plotting.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's nothing wrong with a slow jam. It's just that most of them are stupid.

Would it be impolite to ask about the status of the sex lives of posters who think of that as sex music?

Ally, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

music for sex != music which is sexy. Not always, at least.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Altho I have been driving in cars w/ friends and some particularly good slow jam comes on & we start y'know, looking at each-other like that at least for a moment. At the same point, if I invite some gurl up to my flat I'd feel dead goofy trying to do the whole slo-jam, couch, arm sneaking thing.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterling, have you heard En Vogue's last album? Some lovely sumptuous slow jam stuff on there. I'm sure meanwhile the R Kelly might be good, but the only thing he ever charted for in Australia was 'I Believe I Can Fly'.

Tim, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*That* song is, of course, unspeakable, and don't start me on "The Storm Is Over Now", but I remember "Bump'n'Grind" being a hit in the UK (though I think it took a reissue to make it so) and it was and is very very good. I vaguely recall liking "You Remind Me Of Something" as well.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally is half-right about "Rock The Boat": it's a good song, but it could easily lose up to a minute or so and no-one would be the wiser. The same applies to "I Refuse" (probably my least favourite song on the album even if it occassionally it sounds fantastic, but at any rate certainly not "boring"). But Dan, why have you procrastinated? Even a fule could tell you that it's an excellent album.

Tim, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is a good album, but actually Tim I have that problem with ALL of the tracks, they should be a bit shorter. Her songs have a tendency to keep going when clearly the steam is gone, almost like they were told "YOU HAVE TO FILL FIVE MINUTES OR ELSE!" or something equally silly by the execs and thus are doing it. It's not nearly as bad as Destiny's Child and their "We will repeat the chorus 10,000 times per song to make it longer than 2.5 minutes" thing, plus I think Aaliyah's best songs are better than DC's best songs, but it's still an issue.

one year passes...
"Maneater" is really good, can't stop listening to it. THANKYOU timbaland.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 13 February 2006 08:30 (twenty years ago)

This is my fave 2006 single. It's like everything I like in Lady Sovereign and Kelis in a single track.

snowballing (snowballing), Monday, 13 February 2006 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh wow, Timbaland! YSI please! :-)))

thought i might like this, but confired, she is fucking dreadful.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 13 February 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

why does she sing? b/c talking that way is not enough.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 13 February 2006 09:48 (twenty years ago)

the fran drescher of music!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 13 February 2006 10:00 (twenty years ago)

oh hater, her personality is endearing, chirpy b-girl style.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

apparently she's all angry and down-with-love on this new record. guess the marriage didn't last very long.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I don't like Nelly too much but at least she had the sense to stay out of the way of this beat. MONSTER.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

It's like Jam & Lewis producing led zep's lost synth-rock masterpiece.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

i'm surprised at all the nelly-haters, this seems tailored to her style.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

That "I'm like a bird" song was being played by a certain radio station at the same time every morning every day for like 2 months at one point. And that was the only station they played at my work. I was one day away from driving my car to her house and giving her a piece of my mind.

I am the second robot version of me, Monday, 13 February 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

This sounds like Timbaland's Kenna, melodically.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Also, it had "soul" in the chorus, which is never good.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

I.e. the word "soul" not the quality.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

This is great. But I liked Nelly's first album so yeah.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Apparently there is another song named "Promiscuous Girl" floating around.. anyone have it?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only person who thinks this sounds like a Gravy Train!!!! song?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

I hope.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Nelly ft. Timbaland - Promiscuous Girl. This is the version that's been on a few mixtapes.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

not that michael taylor is reading this but he's an idiot. imagine herc (black) didn't sample kraftwerk (white), no hip-hop. no music exists, for long, without some other culture peering in, changing, adding, expanding it, exploring.

the rock n roll nigga (the rock n roll nigga), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 08:17 (twenty years ago)

"Promiscuous Girl", the full version

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

http://www.burninthespotlight.com/

so apparently nelly's next ablum is entirely produced by timbaland. the two first songs being great i can't wait to hear the rest (i don't really get the hate for nelly here... bah...even the presence of chris martin is not enough to turn me away from her !).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

six years pass...

anyone check out her new album?

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

I am two tracks in and I am regaining respect for Rodney Jerkins, which I did not expect

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:52 (thirteen years ago)

i liked a lot of the production on this, pity the songwriting doesn't really match up

lex pretend, Monday, 24 September 2012 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

The songs don't seem any weaker than what she had on Loose to me.

http://www.npr.org/2012/09/20/161403153/nelly-furtado-inspires-the-spirit-indestructible

This profile thing focusses on uplift and her save the children efforts but doesn't say a lot re how this impacts her album musically. It also addresses her lyrical transition back to English from Spanish.

curmudgeon, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

okay this Tiesto remix of "Thoughts" is wholly unnecessary

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

feel kinda bad for her that this is her first English album since Loose and nobody has an idea it's coming out

some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

There was a thing in this mornings Metro about it.

Mark G, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

Randall Roberts in the LA Times loves it:

On her fifth studio album, "The Spirit Indestructible," Furtado teams with superstar producer-songwriter Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Salaam Remi and Passion Pit founder Mike Angelekos to create a thick, jam-filled joyride with more emotional heft than all her peers save maybe Beyoncé. Madonna wishes she could make a record as vital and imaginative as even the lesser tracks on "Spirit."

curmudgeon, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

this is way way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than MDNA

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

thick, jam-filled

"big hoops" was kind of like a big deal in the UK and environs

zvookster, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

The songs don't seem any weaker than what she had on Loose to me.

really? they're not weak or obviously bad per se but there's nothing here as addictive, like need-to-hear-on-loop-for-foreseeable-future addictive, as half of loose. they're just okayish.

this is way way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than MDNA

well yeah, lol

ok, but in the US her last album had multiple #1 hits and so far this one hasn't even cracked the Hot 100

also woah zvookster's back

some dude, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 11:15 (thirteen years ago)

big hoops seems a little tryhard no? not to say a lot of her previous stuff didn't

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

ok this album is pretty hard to take, especially when furtado says things like "banger" and "drop the beat" in her mom jeans speaking voice between songs

some dude, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

She did that on Loose too!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

haha i never listened to that album in full, gross

some dude, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

three months pass...

I kinda dig this

flags in the post (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 20 January 2013 05:12 (thirteen years ago)

nine years pass...

"I'm Like a Bird" apart from being a lovely song seems singular to me in that it's a debut single from a 22-year old who holds solo writing credits and won a grammy for song of the year, Billboard #9 peak but absolutely massive in other countries
