ugh you guys i want to go to this SOOO BAD
is the venue nice? are we talking multiple stages here? if so, how badly do the sets conflict?
that Doug Tuttle album is awesome
― alpine static, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 05:23 (ten years ago) link
Pictures above should give you an idea at least. Thought the venue was outstanding for what's basically a big park next to a river.

thanks for posting that video, it certainly seems to capture what it's like being there. huge help.
i wish more festivals spread their programming across multiple indoor venues in an urban settin as opposed to setting up stages in a giant field. like SXSW and MusicfestNW in Portland, although MFNW just changed from the former to the latter.

oh Elvis, man, i just scrolled up. somehow i had totally missed your 2013 reports/pics/vids. wouldn't have even asked my question if i had seen 'em. thanks.
― alpine static, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 16:00 (ten years ago) link
The problem with multiple indoor venues are the lines to get in - makes stage-hopping very difficult if you have to keep waiting.

Medicine just added!
― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 30 March 2014 06:48 (ten years ago) link
Also, there's some sort of pre-party going on with The Warlocks. More info as it comes in...
Anyone else here going?
― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 30 March 2014 06:49 (ten years ago) link
I'm going. Won't catch the pre-show, but I'll be there for the fest itself.

Annoyed that I have to choose between Medicine, Acid Mothers Temple, and The Horrors on Saturday night.

medicine
― denial plan (electricsound), Thursday, 24 April 2014 10:24 (ten years ago) link
That's what I'm leaning towards even though I saw them last year.
― Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 24 April 2014 12:07 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, that's one of the worst overlaps. Leaning toward Medicine myself.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 24 April 2014 12:15 (ten years ago) link
acid mothers were kind of a letdown when i saw them, might of just been an off night though
― brio, Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:45 (ten years ago) link
So, I still detest festivals, but this was pretty amazing.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 16:35 (ten years ago) link
pretty bummed I wasn't able to go
― nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 17:26 (ten years ago) link
As I suspected, my favorite bands were the ones I had no clue about... La Femme's manic on-the-border-of-silly-but-totally-in-control garagesplatter mayhem. Kikagaku Moyo's utterly heroic transcendence (so badass they play the sitar standing up)
Loop was perfect. By Sunday, Psych Fest was in need of a serious Wire-like intensity to blow out the "hey man, keep Austin weird hippies" and Loop delivered. "Arc Light," "Mother Sky" and a light show the size of a drive-in movie theater was worth the drive and deficit spending to get out here.
Also, I met EZ Snappin! Subtract another degree of ILX separation.

Don't forget Zombie Zombie! No clue they'd be that much fun.

EZ, Elvis, other Austin locals,
are any of you musicians with an interest in making some kind of psychedelic music on a casual level?
― nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Saturday, 10 May 2014 15:06 (ten years ago) link
I would if I played anything, or at least anything vaguely well. Alas, I do not.

I'm always up for that, but I don't live in Austin. (I live in LA)

First round of bands for next year announced. Has about 10% of the appeal of the 2014 lineup, but I bet it'll sell more tickets:

That line up and "rebranding" makes it sound like Urban Outfitters took over. Why let The Flaming Lips on stage in the year 2015?
― Tomás Piñon (Ryan), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link
This confused me at first. So Levitation (which I think is a good name) is the new name of APF? Did they announce this and I missed it? In other words, this is the APF lineup, not a second event.
― alpine static, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 22:23 (nine years ago) link
correct. They've used Levitation overseas and want to unite the brands.
and this lineup is 90% suck.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link
yeesh. looks like I missed the boat to go to one of these, then :(

Some good bands in the middle-tier, but I'm going to sit this one out.

There's going to be spin-off Levitation/APF in Vancouver BC in the first week of June. No line-up announced yet except Black Mountain (and yeah they are from here & have played a million times so big deal really).

One good day. Might head down on Sunday but man are Friday and Saturday not my thing.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 13 February 2015 23:13 (nine years ago) link
In some alt. universe where I could actually attend this I'd probably at least try to catch Sungod's set on Saturday, and maybe Eartj, but yeah Sunday def has the most solid lineup.

Anyone planning on going to Levitation (formerly Austin Psych Fest) this year? I don't usually do these things, but there are just way too many acts I'm excited about.

I'll be there! The lineup is pretty incredible compared to most of the other big ticket festivals, which have become super lame imo. I was originally planning to go to Shaky Knees in Atlanta again this year, but I was betrayed by this year's lineup- So Austin here I come.

― the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Thursday, 28 April 2016 23:31 (eight years ago) link
that sucks. I'm keeping an eye out for any good replacement shows over the weekend. Would still really like to see Flying Lotus, OPN, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith in particular.
― Check Yr Scrobbles (Moodles), Thursday, 28 April 2016 23:32 (eight years ago) link
FWIW there's shitty weather coming in (rain with possible flooding), and this event didn't seem ready to handle that.
― Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 28 April 2016 23:51 (eight years ago) link
It's the venue that is the issue, not the event organizers or anything they can control. It's a big open field by a river. The parking lot is a field. It'd be impassable in minutes with rain, and there's no cover for hail, tornados, etc.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 April 2016 23:57 (eight years ago) link
that's a huge bummer for folks who came in from out of town for this... but you really, really don't want to be caught in a giant crowd in a flood-prone area during a flash flood here. I feel even worse for the organizers, because if the storms don't materialize, they're going to get (unfairly) savaged.
bright side: I now have a fighting chance to see Slowdive if they manage to rebook at another local venue!
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Friday, 29 April 2016 00:37 (eight years ago) link
Yeah, it seems like when a big selling point of your event is on-site camping, cancelling on those grounds is a no-brainer.
This could be a boon for other venues in Austin and surrounding markets if they could pick up some of the acts (although I don't know how much contract dodging that would entail).
― Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 29 April 2016 00:43 (eight years ago) link
And by "event not being ready to handle that", I meant having back-up venues in town or another--perhaps indoor--site ready, but otoh that is kind of nuts.
― Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 29 April 2016 00:46 (eight years ago) link
The logistics of a "just in case" backup for an event with three simultaneous stages and 10-15,000 fans is basically impossible. Would be nice, and I feel horrible for the promotors and the people that have traveled from all over the globe.
