This Year's Festivals

i would like to go to a supernormal/sin eater type of festival. more interested in experimental/leftfield music as opposed to folky stuff. any other suggestions?

But I can't think of any other camping/chalet type festivals that meet your criteria at the moment.

Oh I should go to Supernormal seeing as I live like ten miles away, but I don't do camping, so I've spent the past 3 years being grumpy because I thought it was in a village with no public transport after 5pm and no B&Bs, except it is actually possible to get off the site after dark after all apparently, or so someone only told me last month.

(I just didn't realise that partly because in the first year they didn't list any transport/B&B options on their website but mainly because I am dumm.)

Kind of old lazy for the festival thing now though but maybe it will be fine if I tell myself it's just two all-dayers in a row, in an inconvenient location, with mud and not very good toilets

Yeah, the Cambridge thing looks good and Supernormal has some fairly unmissable acts on at it (Sarah Angliss, Sam Underwood, Richard Dawson, Graham Dunning to name but a few). As usual, I have managed to avoid all of them by working too hard.

Nick! Yay! I am now playing twice at Supernormal, though you probably won't want to see the first act I'm playing with as, hmm, I'm pretty sure you don't dig his stuff. Everything is clashing horribly badly with everything else, too, though not sure it's something I can get mad about as I want to see a good 90% of the acts, so of course it's going to clash.

That Wysing Arts thing *does* look really great, too.

Good! Think we played well, the other bands were great, people came and we actually sold records, so about as good as you could hope for, really. I played so craply at Indietracks, though, think the heat and the pints of wine didn't work together so well - we still went down pretty well, figure that's the joy of a six-piece, everyone else can cover for me, heh.

really looking forward to seeing bong btw, ideally they should have been the only act booked and they could've done a continuous three day set (no offence to the brighton contingent obv)

never really got excited about a Bong recording but they were bang on when I saw em in a church crypt earlier this year. think the whole 'outside, in the dusk' thing will suit them quite well

It's not actually going to rain is it? it was supposed to have started already. Currently in Oxford and it's almost ideal camping conditions, if maybe a bit too hot. Terrified I've made bad packing decisions whatever the weather.
First festival I can think of where I haven't made an overly complicated timetable; only things that are a definites are Part Chimp and emil.y's lot.

Nah, everything was okay in the end, despite the Nest stage getting rained off and our tent nearly collapsing and it being freezing. I initially attempted to make a timetable but there were too many good things so I just went with seeing whatever I happened to see for a reasonable amount.

I think I am quite broken now.

Ah it was fine, although it was the first time I've left a festival without staying for the last night since Glastonbury 1998, but more for logistical reasons.

Thoroughly enjoyed Gnod, Death Shanties, Shitwife, Luminous Bodies, Sexwing, Henry Blacker, Fish Police, Mob Rules, Palehorse, Esben & the Witch, Teeth of the Sea, Part Chimp, Bass Clef, whatever else happened afterwards on saturday night, Thought Forms, Taman Shud, Slum of Legs, the laser microphone thing and drawing with contact mics. Even more enjoyable was the atmosphere onsite. Really hope there's something similar next year.

Have the ATP guys not thought about just quitting this business if they can't manage to make any of their events feasible any more? Never mind them owing craploads of money to everyone.

Sort of shamed to admit but I actually had a very good time at Boomtown Fair.

Boomtown has its fair share of white dreadlocks, tribal tattoos and electro-swing LARPer-types but it's also one of the most imaginatively executed ways to spend a long weekend. They turn the Matterley Bowl into a literal toon-town you can wander around with built facades hiding areas you can go into with live actors. There's a big onus on fancy dress/dressing fancy which initially put me off, but it's best to just hang up your inhibitions and embrace it. There's funfair rides and it's got the Arcadia spider too which is def worth a watch. Some of the stages are incredible-looking as well - a giant temple in the Lion's Den area, a pirate ship, a wild west area and a huge stage-cum-boombox elsewhere. The music wasn't necessarily up my street - lots of comedy klexmery folky shite fogging up the place, but when it comes to dub and reggae there's enough to fill your boots and I especially enjoyed the Wailers and Easy Stars. It had a reputation for being a very druggy festival but more recently they've clamped down. Weed is tolerated on the whole, but that's it, and they do have a family area now too.

Been twice now and both times I was ready to cringe and have a bad time but as soon as I've gotten there I've found myself overwhelmed at how exciting and vibrant the whole thing is.

if the CB line up is crap next year, then this sounds like a definite contender for me and the kids.

Fish Police are fucking brilliant. If I could rewind Supernormal I'd have got up and danced rather than just sitting their open-mouthed wobbling my legs a bit.

If I were to go to a festival in the UK this year, where should I go?

Supernormal is actually happening again, despite rumours of its demise. I think they've rejigged the organisers and it might be a different site (? maybe ?) but it will happen.

I am very tempted by Supernormal but not sure if I could convince friends to come. Strange question, but what's the atmosphere/vibe like compared to other (i.e. more mainstream) fests?

it's relatively small and very friendly and my impression is that you can go there and be relatively sedate and/or with kids, or spend most of the weekend getting wrecked, without either group having its enjoyment spoiled by the other

Festival number 6 was fantastic last year. The line up was good but it's really all about the Portmeirion setting, not many finer places to lose yourself for a few days. unfortunately this year's first wave of announced acts is pretty uninspiring.

my friends really want me to go and im having conflicting feeling about this. if Morrissey was not the headliner this would be a much easier decision. i'm also not a festive type of person and i saw Bauhaus last November anyways. i have singed up for the per sale code so we will see.

i got a presale code and just went in to buy tickets, they are $185 each with service fee but not including parking.

i know someone who went to a Chargers football game there and they charged him $100 for parking and i can see this being the same...

Riot Fest just posted their lineup, and nearly all the bands I love the most are basically going to be there without the main reason I'd want to see them. For completely understandable reasons, tbf, but still, it read like this:

The Sex Pistols! (without Johnny Rotten)
The Beach Boys! (without Brian Wilson)
The Pogues! (without Shane MacGowan)
Buzzcocks! (without Pete Shelley)
Marky Ramone! (because the original four are dead)

Yeah, all these incomplete bands made me sad. On the other hand, "Weird" Al! Sparks! James! Camper Van Beethoven! But ... yeah, not much to get excited about here.

Camper Van Beethoven have two anniversary shows for Telephone Free Landslide Victory but I think they're only in San Francisco. I saw them once in the 2010s and was so excited to go that in my naïveté, I didn't realize they were simply the opener for Cracker, so their set was much shorter.
