This "Gabriel" song. What the hell? (In a good way.)

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 04:40 (twelve years ago)

"Gabriel" is an established ILM dance kru fave!

imago draggin' (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 February 2014 06:01 (twelve years ago)

also it's about an archangel

imago draggin' (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 February 2014 06:02 (twelve years ago)

Peven Everett sang it and played trumpet too!

imago draggin' (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 February 2014 06:04 (twelve years ago)

I bet there are millions of people who would like this song (and lots of other tracks here) if they heard it.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 06:14 (twelve years ago)

Kind of bizarre how separate U.S. and UK music manage to remain most of the time. I'm sure I could think up some good explanations and find even better ones (right here), but in the end it's kind of bizarre considering the lack of any significant language barrier.

steering the thread back to Q, rudipherous you might have missed these

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 15 February 2014 11:39 (twelve years ago)

I can't believe I'm already behind again just on the DJ Q links posted on this thread. (Finally getting to the Just For Fun mix.) Thanks all. Oh, "Ease Your Pain" has already colonized my nervous system via the sets I've listened to in the car.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 17:02 (twelve years ago)

"Move your waistline to my bassline" sounds like there is finally a suitable Anglophone answer to all the "mueve tu cintura" in Latin music.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 17:12 (twelve years ago)

Sorry to be so all over this thread but Feeling High and Why one-two-punch killing me. Agh. </imago> That "please" is just so perfect. Raw ache.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 17:36 (twelve years ago)

Was the vocal choppiness in parts (you know which parts) of "1 Thing" drawing from UK garage, do you think, or was it arriving there from other directions. (It's not like a unique idea obviously, but still, I hear a particular simiarity there.)

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 21:19 (twelve years ago)

?

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 21:21 (twelve years ago)

btw here's a link to disc one of Shanks & Bigfoot's Ayia Napa 2000 comp:

Tim F, Saturday, 15 February 2014 21:27 (twelve years ago)

Thanks. Ugh, my PC is so messed up (old and slightly virus-damaged operating system) that other download didn't work for me, but I'm going to try it when I'm alone at work tomorrow. (Better to do it at work in some ways, since I also can't burn CDRs on my own PC and that's the only way I have to play any of this in my car.)

I have to say I like practically everything I've gotten to hear so far. Not necessarily every single track in multi-track mixes, but the mixes overall, plus all these individual tracks among DJ Q's separately listed faves.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 22:00 (twelve years ago)

That link worked for me, incidentally.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 February 2014 22:04 (twelve years ago)

... And Ayia Napa 2000 disc 2:

Tim F, Saturday, 15 February 2014 23:25 (twelve years ago)

Haha, it's funny the things you can make up based on ignornace. I was thinking "Buggin'" was a new song that Q was giving some exposure to but then since I never heard it any other mixes or anything since I first heard it (on the 30 min. exclusive) I figured it had kind of flopped, that and the fact that I don't really like it.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 16 February 2014 02:13 (twelve years ago)

ayo Tim F - did you get my message on twitter by any chance?

corpseydo, Sunday, 16 February 2014 14:16 (twelve years ago)

YES.

The last few sets have saved my life.

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 February 2014 21:35 (twelve years ago)

Also corpsey I have now! Will listen...

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 February 2014 21:35 (twelve years ago)

Just to update needlessly: I haven't gotten to everything recommended, but I haven't lost interest. I've also found some close enough things, like some DJ EZ material on youtube. Plus I've decided to dive in to a bit of Chicago house. Realizing I'm really kind of crazy about Todd Edwards generally, though I still haven't listened to that much of what he's done.

Five tracks in and this is predictably great, Through The Night is probably the standout so far.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 March 2014 19:40 (twelve years ago)

stuck at work, can't waaaaaaaiiiiiit

The Reverend, Monday, 24 March 2014 22:10 (twelve years ago)

Discretely closing my office door.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 24 March 2014 23:30 (twelve years ago)

Yeah just hit Through the Night and this song really does have a je ne sais quoi to it.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 24 March 2014 23:48 (twelve years ago)

1st impressions - great! but i kinda want a mixed version.

also just dawned on me i´d heard the discarda tune yonks ago and completely forgotten about it.

Benny B, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 00:41 (twelve years ago)

this is great so far but kinda sucks that he had to redo "Every Time" without the Amerie sample

The Reverend, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 01:13 (twelve years ago)

ooh, I like this dude rapping VERY EMPHATICALLY about his shorty

The Reverend, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 01:34 (twelve years ago)

Willing spring to come by putting this album on repeat.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 03:34 (twelve years ago)

I didn't know that was an Amerie sample but I am pretty sure I know which one you're talking about, Reverend. I miss that vocal Arabesque here too.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 05:27 (twelve years ago)

It's loading more slowly. What times is it in the UK? (I still haven't made it all the way through btw. Couldn't do it at work and at home I keep trying to pause it and ending up starting over.)

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 05:29 (twelve years ago)

I thought I reached some sort of crucial psychological/existential insight listening to "Through the Night" earlier but now I'm not sure. I'm not going to even embarrass myself by trying to explain it here. Quite personal actually (and not related to the lyrics particularly--except in some oblique nature-of-feeling-as-such sort of way). Maybe I was just music intoxicated as usual.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 05:35 (twelve years ago)

MCs. :(

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 05:55 (twelve years ago)

"be mine" is probably my second favourite after (obviously) "through the night" - he knows how to use cut-up vox for maximum emotional impact not just a throwback signifier...

lex pretend, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 10:08 (twelve years ago)

the haunted-house bass of "caught up"!!!!

toby, Saturday, 29 March 2014 10:43 (twelve years ago)

Not really used to listening to Q outside the mix so a couple of the instrumental bangers feel a bit... unfinished to me, Two Faced especially. But the vocal tracks are all amazing.

The obvious exception being Lassie and even that's a good groove, but virtually any other MC in Britain would sound better over it than John Hartson Discarda.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 April 2014 09:16 (twelve years ago)

I really have no idea who Discarda is but I like "Lassie" because of the weird cognitive dissonance between the aggro-ness of the rap and its subject matter.

The Reverend, Monday, 7 April 2014 14:51 (twelve years ago)

that entertained me at first but it turned out to be more novelty than lasting (perhaps would've worked better as a stand-alone single rather than crashing this party)

lex pretend, Monday, 7 April 2014 14:57 (twelve years ago)

I BRING OUT THE BEST IN HER
SHE BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN ME
YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT?

I can't get past the ridiculousness of it (which you've pinpointed), honestly.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 15:50 (twelve years ago)

sounds like 'me and my bitch' tbh
