soref, thanks for the belligerent tip, I did some watching on YouTube. The Everett stuff I saw was warmed over Python, other than getting real pop musicians in the skits ("bring a celebrity in to do jokes about their own celebrity" is the only thing that has kept Saturday Night Life-Support from flatlining altogether). I'll keep watching Holt, most of the jokes are incomprehensibly local for me, but I'll try. They tried to sell Tracey Ullman in America once upon a time, but I get now that Holt is the original.

Being trapped in my USA worldview, I conclude that Canadians made the two best sketch shows, & that Monty Python travels pretty well across time & space, considering. I can't imagine either of the shows you mentioned crossing the Atlantic or even the English Channel. Not that it should matter to you, of course - being objective about comedy is a joke.

sorry, I didn't mean to sound belligerent, agree that the idea of objective opinions about comedy is silly, and that those two shows are maybe quite location specific and maybe era specific in their appeal (though I'm sure I remember a few US ilxors talking about Acorn Antiques? I like the idea of that having a cult following in the states)

soref, Sunday, 30 November 2014 23:51 (nine years ago) link

It's all cool! Victoria Holt is obviously good stuff, although a lot of jokes are going to go right past me. And at the very least I need to see the Kate Bush skit on the K.E. show (I do already know the one she did with Rowan Atkinson on his tv show, the song with "do bears la la la....").

I feel like the easiest way to ensure that your son will never enjoy life is to name him Chad. or Mervyn.

the geographibebebe (unregistered), Friday, 3 April 2015 21:42 (nine years ago) link

These are not ranked by the happiness of people who bear the name, but the intrinsic levels of joy/sorrow that these names contain in the abstract. Amos means "burden" so it's pretty sad.

Deviations were taken into account. "Jackie" is the happiest form of "John/Ian/Jonathan/Eoin/Johnny" and so on. "Chris", possibly the saddest name in history, is saved by the happy qualities of "Christopher". "Steve" and "Steven" are sad, "Stephan" and "Stefan" are still pretty sad; "Stevie" alone is joyful. Nobody should name their child Chad that is the name of a country, nobody should name their child North Carolina either. Mervyn is a terrific name

got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Friday, 3 April 2015 21:49 (nine years ago) link

Oh no, I'm definitely very sad. Thanks, mom and dad, for the name.

Zoot Allures
...at this point, most every album is a mix of manure and gems and it's hard to rank them. I haven't listened to the Yellow Shark and Civ. Phaze 3 in years but they would probably place pretty high up.

Dang, I always leave out something important. I'd put WOIIFTM at 3.5, above Hot Rats. Apostrophe, Overnite Sensation, One Size Fits All -- I lump those in the gems/manure category. Never been a big fan of Apostrophe.
