Sampha kindaaaaa sounds like R. Kelly on his track.
― Murgatroid, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:48 (twelve years ago)
well, one per cent of r kelly, anyway
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:49 (twelve years ago)
the thought process behind relegating "blue eyes" and "hot like fire" to bonus tracks while keeping "tumbling down" and "play" and "still" for the main album...completely inexplicable
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:50 (twelve years ago)
"still" could've been cut... i like "tumbling down" a lot tho
the graham norton performance of "crying for no reason" is pretty stunning
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:01 (twelve years ago)
"tumbling down" is where my interest starts to wander, never seem to particularly notice "play" either
but "everything" and "emotions" are the best songs!
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:05 (twelve years ago)
I stop the album after "Emotions" tbh.
― Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:20 (twelve years ago)
and no way is this album the equal of On a Mission.
― Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, February 6, 2014 7:20 PM (35 seconds ago) Bookmark
well it's the second to last song, that's not that crazy
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:21 (twelve years ago)
this definitely doesn't have, like, the energy that "on a mission" had simply by existing but it's really, really good i think
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:22 (twelve years ago)
I want to argue this thing is poorly sequence except I wouldn't know where to start resequencing. It's hard to evaluate a release as an album when a considerable portion has leaked in advance; cobbling it together again affects my thinking of it as a whole, if that makes sense. "Still," "Play," and "Sapphire Blue" sound like curate's eggs to me.
― Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:25 (twelve years ago)
*poorly sequenced too
Question: which song from the first album has had the most resonance for you guys?
"Power On Me" and "Hard to Get."
― Eric H., Friday, 7 February 2014 00:27 (twelve years ago)
oh i love "everything" but i just meant "tumbling down", which seems to last several years, is where the album just loses its momentum and flow completely. i've actually had to make an alternate track listing, i never ever actually do that but it's the only way to salvage these excellent songs
― lex pretend, Friday, 7 February 2014 00:27 (twelve years ago)
I like the harmonies on "Tumbling Down" -- reminded me of mid eighties Prince.
― Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:28 (twelve years ago)
It's hard to evaluate a release as an album when a considerable portion has leaked in advance
well, released as singles!
um, do you guys...have the bonus tracks? without them i might well be calling this a disappointment. some of the most striking songs there, all really good
― lex pretend, Friday, 7 February 2014 00:28 (twelve years ago)
ha i don't think i've ever done that
i have no real feel for sequencing
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:28 (twelve years ago)
"blue eyes" is really good
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:29 (twelve years ago)
wasn't gonna post my alternate track listing til the thing was actually out but here we go

tumbling down/play/still can be bonus tracks if they want
― lex pretend, Friday, 7 February 2014 00:30 (twelve years ago)
oh i talked to her today and at least have an answer as to why "hot like fire" is just a bonus track
she had no excuse for "blue eyes"
― lex pretend, Friday, 7 February 2014 00:34 (twelve years ago)
please say she made "hot like fire" a bonus track so she can "super bass" it
― prolego, Friday, 7 February 2014 01:25 (twelve years ago)
i'm imagining she's just sent it to t-swift right now while she's in the uk so she can impromptu sing it on the radio
― prolego, Friday, 7 February 2014 01:26 (twelve years ago)
Don't have the bonus tracks, dig the album. Really like 'Play' and 'Tumbling Down' - 'Still' can get the boot though.
― abcfsk, Friday, 7 February 2014 07:46 (twelve years ago)
i sorta feel like she came for adele's neck with this album and i'm not even mad at her
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 13:35 (twelve years ago)
i don't get that impression at ALL unless anyone focusing on slow songs is automatically pitching themselves against adele? everything about them is wildly different.
the production on this album is still pretty heavily rooted in uk dance, it's still unmistakeably the katy & gee show
― lex pretend, Friday, 7 February 2014 13:43 (twelve years ago)
i have a suspicion that you wouldn't like "hot like fire" so much if it wasn't named after an aaliyah song, i think that's one of the worst songs
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 13:50 (twelve years ago)
tim jonze a bit harsh today i thought
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 7 February 2014 13:52 (twelve years ago)
it has nothing to do with the aaliyah song? i can assure you that aaliyah worship is not exactly a means to win me over. it's one of the most immediate, anyway
― lex pretend, Friday, 7 February 2014 13:52 (twelve years ago)
i think this is totally a transition album, i also think it's kinda great
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 13:53 (twelve years ago)
"still" was co written by an adele collaborator and though "emotions" is a total rudimental track i do feel like adele could've come back "crying for no reason" and people would've flipped
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 13:57 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, after some of the pre-release talk I was surprised listening to it how much this was 'like the first' in its uk dance roots and general low-key beauty. Except for Still I guess.
― abcfsk, Friday, 7 February 2014 14:31 (twelve years ago)
is there a reason why the continuous mix has a completely different ordering to the standard tracklist? it works so much better.
― prolego, Saturday, 8 February 2014 10:15 (twelve years ago)
What's the continuous mix tracklisting?
― Matt DC, Saturday, 8 February 2014 14:29 (twelve years ago)

"Next Thing" is way more uk funky than I expect of her (or anyone, really) at this point
― raggett neds of your summer dress (The Reverend), Saturday, 8 February 2014 15:36 (twelve years ago)
wow i'm about the sequencing of the continuous mix
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 8 February 2014 18:51 (twelve years ago)
I'm glad I ordered the deluxe version, that continuous mix looks fantastic.
― A. Begrand, Saturday, 8 February 2014 18:54 (twelve years ago)
continuous mix makes me actually like "tumbling down" and "play"
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 8 February 2014 19:13 (twelve years ago)
"blue eyes" is seriously blowing my mind right now.
― prolego, Saturday, 8 February 2014 19:30 (twelve years ago)
and "stay down" is just the most gorgeous heartbreaking thing ever. whoever decided upon what should be on the standard version needs a long hard look at themselves.
― prolego, Saturday, 8 February 2014 19:36 (twelve years ago)
Blue Eyes was maybe the standout for me first go around, yeah.
― pearly-dewdrops' bops (monotony), Saturday, 8 February 2014 20:35 (twelve years ago)
so yeah this blue eyes song kind of reminds me in parts of sweet female attitude's "flowers" which is about the highest compliment i can pay anything
― pearly-dewdrops' bops (monotony), Sunday, 9 February 2014 16:31 (twelve years ago)
yes! my initial thought when listening to it was of the artful dodger mix of valerie m's "tingles 2000" but that makes much more sense.
― prolego, Sunday, 9 February 2014 19:17 (twelve years ago)
just going in on the continuous mix and feeling v vindicated. why the hell wasn't this the actual track listing?
― lex pretend, Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:03 (twelve years ago)
i changed the actual tracklisting to reflect it. "hot like fire" as a penultimate track is weird but otherwise it works perfectly
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:13 (twelve years ago)
whats the line ware sings starting with "i don't believe...", been trying to work it out
― r|t|c, Friday, December 7, 2012 7:57 PM (1 year ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
also this is v belated but i heard this last week and couldn't believe it ever stumped me. "i don't believe i can defend him", right?
― lex pretend, Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:14 (twelve years ago)
ya i'd always assumed it was that but the line still sounds fudged somewhat
vox aside the lp version is reproduced a tad clearer i think
― r|t|c, Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:55 (twelve years ago)
going to give this lp the grace of another chance sometime but i must admit the first blush leant towards insipid

<3 you for even thinking of this tune as a reference point for anything.
― Tim F, Sunday, 9 February 2014 22:28 (twelve years ago)
holy shit this is a grower
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 10 February 2014 06:36 (twelve years ago)
man, the continuous mix really is far superior. jeez.
