He was good on the drums. I still like nothing about his music but I came away very very impressed by him as a performer.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:25 (ten years ago) link

He had an unfathomable degree of perfection to his performance while still managing to seem loose.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

i loved the drum solo opening

also his drummer is his brother iirc

Yeah that was all pretty slick. No surprise new tour dates got announced right after that, no better ad for it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 February 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

he's had years of practice tbh

I thought the aging, shirtless chili peppers jumping out and doing give-it-away was a hilarious art joke though.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:27 (ten years ago) link

It was like having a beautiful cake and then having a comically ugly stripper jump out of it.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:28 (ten years ago) link

that was really the best song they could have done though

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:28 (ten years ago) link

all of the 40/50 year old women I was watching with greatly appreciated shirtless RHCP

SHAUN (DJP), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:29 (ten years ago) link

lol, the 35-year-old women I was with were I guess not at that stage of their lives yet, b/c they kept saying "they really need to wear shirts"

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:29 (ten years ago) link

i was thinking about how anthony keidis' tattoos were some of the first tattoos i remember actually fixating on and comprehending as an adolescent and there they are 25 years later

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:45 (ten years ago) link

xp: Orly? I missed the game, but here are a couple comments that turned up in my facebook feed via a couple of 35-ish friends:

Anthony Keidis. I so would. Then, now, and always.

I still have the hots for Anthony Kiedis...even in a pair of leggings I would probably wear.

the 50 year woman I was with was not impressed

curmudgeon, Monday, 3 February 2014 15:53 (ten years ago) link

50 year old

curmudgeon, Monday, 3 February 2014 15:53 (ten years ago) link

But yes Bruno is a great live performer (I'm just not wowed by his songs).

curmudgeon, Monday, 3 February 2014 16:03 (ten years ago) link

Didn't know he played drums. Dug that. Dug most of his set, actually. But ugh, fuck the fucking RHCPs and their awful, fundamentally unfunky drummer.

Actually, "unfunky" is too kind. He's negative-funky.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:07 (ten years ago) link

I was surprised that I did recognize a couple of BM's tunes from hearing out there in the ether, he's def a good performer/entertainer but an accurate James Brown impression isn't exactly artistic greatness, but he was like fine.

The switch over to RHCP was just weird. I am happy to report my social media feeds erupted into a bunch of Fishbone jokes and it continued when I went over to my local p-word bar afterward.

I'm still struggling to rectify George Clinton's interest in/affiliation with RHCP in the early 90s.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:30 (ten years ago) link

weird that he had no female dancers/performers at all (?)

also i thought it was cool that his band was all men of color.

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:32 (ten years ago) link

xp: mid-80s?

how's life, Monday, 3 February 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link

seems like a rare case of someone's profile being raised by the Super Bowl rather than an already on-top or slightly-(or massively)-over-the-hill artist performing.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:38 (ten years ago) link

xp at any point in their career, really

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:40 (ten years ago) link

Clinton produced their second record. Andy Gill (?!) produced their first. It's all a rich tapestry.

I know I'm a big music nerd etc etc but I don't really understand how you can have TEN top 5 songs within a 3 year period (with seven as lead artist) and still have ppl going "who is that"

SHAUN (DJP), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:41 (ten years ago) link

also the first three RHCP albums are still great

SHAUN (DJP), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:42 (ten years ago) link

Is Bruno really as diminuative as Prince? (5'2"?)

A friend mentioned that she'd seen Bruno and Bieber in the same room and Bieber towered over him, even though both their hairs were similarly pumped up to gain a couple inches.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:42 (ten years ago) link

hmm... maybe?

monae is 5'0" and wearing heels (and further from the camera) in that pic

He was pretty good hosting Saturday Night Live awhile back. Some folks who never listen to pop hits radio or don't notice such songs elsewhere I think discovered him there.

pretty sure a large chunk of the Super Bowl audience has not kept in touch with the Top 40 for at least twenty years

charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:54 (ten years ago) link

it's so easy not to know big hits, just listen to only your ipod or sports talk radio in the car and only your own music everywhere else on your phone and don't really go to places that play top 40 over the muzak

avant gardener (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:55 (ten years ago) link

OTM, it is pretty easy to not hear a lot of music, I don't even do it on purpose

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 3 February 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

I had actually heard one Bruno Mars song and didn't know it was him. But yeah, like where the fuck would I wind up hearing top 40 without actively seeking it out?

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 February 2014 17:04 (ten years ago) link

the gap probably

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Monday, 3 February 2014 17:05 (ten years ago) link

he made the top 77 last year

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Monday, 3 February 2014 17:05 (ten years ago) link

lol when rhcp were added it was noted it was specifically for the older generation who might not be familiar w/ bruno mars. i was somewhat surprised when they announced bruno mars but not incredibly so, knew he would do well, dude is a total entertainer. you have to wonder if timberlake's name came up during meetings or if nobody even dared to suggest him.

balls, Monday, 3 February 2014 17:07 (ten years ago) link

can't get one past forx

balls, Monday, 3 February 2014 17:09 (ten years ago) link

kinda felt bad for bruno that prince was on new girl immediately afterwards

balls, Monday, 3 February 2014 17:11 (ten years ago) link

Andy Gill (?!) produced their first.

my CD copy of Entertainment! has liner notes by Flea which iirc consist mostly in him calling The Edge a piece of shit for never acknowledging the influence of Andy Gill on his guitar playing.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 3 February 2014 17:11 (ten years ago) link

which is absurd cuz edge has frequently when asked his guitar influences listed gill, levene, and verlaine. i can remember rolling stone doing some interview w/ him where the writer kept trying to get him to talk about eric clapton and edge politely pointing out he was too young for clapton really and generally tried to copy go4, etc as a kid.

balls, Monday, 3 February 2014 17:15 (ten years ago) link

xp: Flea also took a shit in a pizza box and gave it to Andy during the recording sessions.

how's life, Monday, 3 February 2014 17:48 (ten years ago) link

just wanted to chime in to say that I didn't really know who Bruno Mars was either but he was probably my favorite halftime since Prince himself
