nothing wrong with the occasional diane warren ballad

dyl, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 20:48 (twelve years ago)

finding this a lot less...outgoing than on a mission on one listen. more pensive, more feelings, more inward-looking. could be the kind of album that really gets its hooks into you after a few listens...might not be. am where rennavate is, basically

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 21:13 (twelve years ago)

Agreed about this being more inward looking. The album feels less immediate, but I think the songs are there. I think the production is a little generic at times, shifting the focus to her more, and thankfully Katy can carry it. I like the Sampha track because it's brighter than the majority of the album, like someone spritzed some lemon in a very heavy cocktail.

future rendrix (rennavate), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 21:28 (twelve years ago)

anyone have a contact for this?

katherine, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 21:49 (twelve years ago)

"emotions" is pretty stunning imo

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:04 (twelve years ago)

I wonder what J0rdan thinks of "Emotions".

Murgatroid, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:08 (twelve years ago)

sorry i've been listening to that song all day, you guys will have to deal

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:15 (twelve years ago)

Question: which song from the first album has had the most resonance for you guys? Mine is "Easy Please Me."

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:19 (twelve years ago)

same

raggett neds of your summer dress (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:35 (twelve years ago)

My life the last decade.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:37 (twelve years ago)

"power on me" and "movement" were always my two jams off that

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:37 (twelve years ago)

"witches' brew" was the standout for me

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:40 (twelve years ago)

in terms of personal resonance probably... "louder"!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:40 (twelve years ago)

Katy harmonizing with herself on the "Movement" chorus is gorgeous

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:41 (twelve years ago)

Broken Record, for the things in one's head that never stop turning.

these birches is awful (Branwell Bell), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 22:52 (twelve years ago)

yeah probably "broken record" for personal resonance, though i keep on movin' with the lights on

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 23:13 (twelve years ago)

"disappear," easily, either that or "go away" but really "disappear"

katherine, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 23:27 (twelve years ago)

"broken record" and "go away"

dyl, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 23:36 (twelve years ago)

"disappear" is an odd case in that it's my favorite both on personal-resonance and musical-quality grounds

katherine, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 23:51 (twelve years ago)

on a mission is an album full of highlights, pretty much beginning-to-end.

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 30 January 2014 03:36 (twelve years ago)

the breakdown in "i like you" is still immense but man that too-loud snare is going to do my head in forever

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 January 2014 11:53 (twelve years ago)

WHY IS IT THERE TSS-TSSING AWAY RIGHT IN YOUR EAR THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SONG????

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 January 2014 11:54 (twelve years ago)

tell you what, this album could really stand to be heard on NOT A FUCKING PRESS STREAM. i want to hear it on headphones and walk around with it

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 January 2014 12:03 (twelve years ago)

"everything" and "hot like fire" are definitely the standouts

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 January 2014 12:34 (twelve years ago)

The album is released in less than 2 weeks so you won't have long to wait for a non-press stream.

pearly-dewdrops' bops (monotony), Thursday, 30 January 2014 13:02 (twelve years ago)

I've never not liked anything Jacques Greene has done so yeah, "Sapphire Blue" is a standout here.

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 07:53 (twelve years ago)

i like champagne but you don't like the taste / so i drink yours cuz i don't like to waste / i like it ghetto, you like it bougie / but i like it most when it's just you and me

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 08:18 (twelve years ago)

ooh!

raggett neds of your summer dress (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 February 2014 09:20 (twelve years ago)

quite glad that, a few listens later, the songs do seem to be there, but this album is HORRIBLY sequenced and that doesn't help bring them out at first. all the singles senselessly shoved upfront ("aaliyah" needs to be DEEP in any track list, "5 am" and "crying for no reason" are both total home stretch songs), a bunch of pensive, low-key tracks making the album sag around two-thirds in, completely baffling decisions re: relegating some of the liveliest and most striking songs to bonus tracks (these are the ones that could do with being upfront).

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 10:33 (twelve years ago)

otoh, "crying for no reason" hit home in a big way today

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 10:33 (twelve years ago)

no Zinc or Magnetic Men kru? Is "Hot Like Fire" a cover?

raggett neds of your summer dress (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 February 2014 10:53 (twelve years ago)

no and no

a few other producers scattered throughout but mostly they tailor themselves to the Katy & Geeneus show

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 11:01 (twelve years ago)

You know, I was struggling a few months ago, to come up with a list of artists I would automatically buy their new album without hearing a stream first (there were literally two artists on it, and one is now dead and the other has put out an album so bad that I have to rethink that free pass) but I have just realised: Katy B is totally one of those artists.

But yeah, I will take note of the "poorly sequenced" criticism and probably listen to it on random when I buy it.

Branwell Bell, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 11:11 (twelve years ago)

You can supposedly stream the whole album on itunes, she tweeted a link, but doesn't work for me.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 11:57 (twelve years ago)

The trouble is the mid tempo, middling stuff like "Sapphire Blue" and perfunctory dance stuff like "Play."

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:39 (twelve years ago)

"Sapphire Blue" is great, you bastard

Murgatroid, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:40 (twelve years ago)

aaliyah pleez

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:41 (twelve years ago)

"Everything" is like, one bell sample away from being produced by Pantha Du Prince

Murgatroid, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:46 (twelve years ago)

"tumbling down" is where my interest starts to wander, never seem to particularly notice "play" either

"sapphire blue" seems only alright until the amazing "no more walls / no more doors / no more windows / no more floors / no more space / no more time / just your skin / touching mine" climax which slayyyyys

lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:47 (twelve years ago)

"everything" made me wonder what katy b would sound like produced by maya jane coles, and only partly because mjc also has a song of that title

lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:47 (twelve years ago)

Sampha kindaaaaa sounds like R. Kelly on his track.

Murgatroid, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:48 (twelve years ago)

well, one per cent of r kelly, anyway

lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:49 (twelve years ago)

the thought process behind relegating "blue eyes" and "hot like fire" to bonus tracks while keeping "tumbling down" and "play" and "still" for the main album...completely inexplicable

lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 21:50 (twelve years ago)

"still" could've been cut... i like "tumbling down" a lot tho

the graham norton performance of "crying for no reason" is pretty stunning

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:01 (twelve years ago)

"tumbling down" is where my interest starts to wander, never seem to particularly notice "play" either

but "everything" and "emotions" are the best songs!

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:05 (twelve years ago)

I stop the album after "Emotions" tbh.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:20 (twelve years ago)

and no way is this album the equal of On a Mission.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:20 (twelve years ago)

I stop the album after "Emotions" tbh.

well it's the second to last song, that's not that crazy

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:21 (twelve years ago)

this definitely doesn't have, like, the energy that "on a mission" had simply by existing but it's really, really good i think

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 7 February 2014 00:22 (twelve years ago)

I want to argue this thing is poorly sequence except I wouldn't know where to start resequencing. It's hard to evaluate a release as an album when a considerable portion has leaked in advance; cobbling it together again affects my thinking of it as a whole, if that makes sense. "Still," "Play," and "Sapphire Blue" sound like curate's eggs to me.
