he's been out of the picture for some years now, but this is pertinent and sad news:

bummer man

max, Tuesday, 28 January 2014 17:10 (twelve years ago)

this was a long time coming, but honolulu's chinatown as an "arts district" is pretty much dead. where are people here who go out for the music supposed to go dance now? everything's EDM or top 40 anymore.

not sure what thread to put this in but this song is dope. hadn't heard it before. saw some Toronto people posting about it on Facebook, that Harvey played it on Saturday.

Album out this summer under the name Wildest Dreams. Apparently Harvey recorded it a few years ago but Smalltown Supersound are just now releasing it. There's a song on soundcloud called Last Ride. Cool song in the vein of Map of Africa.

mizzell, Friday, 2 May 2014 23:55 (twelve years ago)

A modern day equivalent of the L.A. wrecking crew, Wildest Dreams is the brainchild of DJ Harvey as a means to keep his multi-instrumentalist hand in, so to speak. Wildest Dreams make music inspired by the landscape of L.A and it surrounds for your road and acid trip. The self-titled album was recorded over a week a couple years ago and unearthed by Smalltown Supersound. It will be released July 29th.

DJ Harvey is a near mythical character whose musical style cannot simply be filed as eclectic or retrospective; he plays whatever he feels, as he feels it, but always for the crowd. He is an analogue loving DJ that utilizes reel to reel and effects all conjured live while not being afraid to also work new technology in the mix. He's respected and in demand all over the world. Best put by Rolling Stone when included in their "25 DJs That Rule The Earth," "If Keith Richards was a DJ, he'd totally be Harvey. A libertine Englishman turned California surfer dude, Harvey has been rocking dance floors since the 1980s with his ocean-deep collection of rare disco, Pink Floyd-y space rock, off-kilter techno and anything else danceable. Or as Harvey once said, 'You can't understand the blues until you've had your heart broken by a woman. And you can't understand my music until you've had group sex on Ecstasy.'"

mizzell, Friday, 2 May 2014 23:58 (twelve years ago)

Last Ride just sounds like an anonymous '70s deep album cut to me. Not really feeling it that much. It took a while for Map of Africa and Locussolus to grow on me though. Be interested to hear the rest of the record.

Anyone going to his Meltdown show next week?

Not too keen on the new album tbh.

Interviewed him last night, top bloke.

Apparently the Cirque de Bend thing tonight is a "super gay disco experience". So that'll be fun.

Lyrics to the new record stolen from Bowie and the Tibetan Book of the Dead if he's to be believed.

This documentary on Tonka was posted on Youtube last week, featuring a very young Harvey

groovypanda, Thursday, 19 June 2014 09:13 (eleven years ago)

He looked genuinely sad last night when he said "ahh, fuck, I'm 50, who cares what I think any more" lol

online hardman, Thursday, 19 June 2014 09:14 (eleven years ago)

wildest dreams sounds pretty hard like he bought another copy of fragile. i'm cool with it, except for "pleasure well", because look, harv, we've all heard "riders on the storm", OK?

rushomancy, Thursday, 19 June 2014 18:31 (eleven years ago)

when i saw him shortly after he turned 50 he remarked "it's not really the beginning of the end, it's just the end of the beginning"

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Thursday, 19 June 2014 18:39 (eleven years ago)

Fantastic set last night. I'd say 95% of the crowd were over 40.

If you were there and can ID the track he played at about 10pm that had the INCREDIBLE 'I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I loooooove you' chorus then I'll paypal you a quid.

online hardman, Friday, 20 June 2014 09:11 (eleven years ago)

How well did it work in a concert hall setting?

JLB Credit (Jack BS), Friday, 20 June 2014 09:23 (eleven years ago)

It was in the Spiegeltent rather than Southbank Centre/RFH - really weird atmosphere in that inside the tent it literally felt like 2/3am peak time stuff and the second you stepped outside it was still light. Mildly disorientating.

The "super gay disco experience" extended to a bloke wearing a veil waving flags about for a bit btw.

Seems to have disappeared now (it was a private track anyway).

I did take a shitty 128kbps rip before it vanished though if anyone wants a copy.

(Assume that's ok mods as it's not commercially available anywhere)

Anyone catch the UK tour? The Fabric set was a bit...sluggish.

online hardman, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 15:52 (eleven years ago)

was going to go but they switched to a worse venue & it was ~£25 which seemed v high risk so went to see daniel wang who was super high energy for £7 which seemed like a superior good times economy. apparently the harvey crowd was old but I'm not against that

ogmor, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 16:34 (eleven years ago)

i like the hyperbolic intro but fyi the venue he was involved with in Honolulu was not on the beach and wasn't a hotel (though it had the word "hotel" in its name) and he didn't run it

ah looking forward to checking this out. if any of you happen to be in ibiza i can't recommend the ibiza rocks residency he's doing enough. i had liked his mixes well enough until seeing him live but he did a six-hour set and it was absolutely perfect. didn't recognise a single track except for club tropicana, which i guess he played since the venue was where the video for that was shot.
