Daft Punk's Random Access Memories

History will view this year's AotY race as a showdown between an old-style marketing success (Punk) vs. a juggernaut of new-school self promotion (Mack), and in the end the old guard circled the wagons around the former, embodied by the unlikeliest of avatars.

Toto comparison wildly off base unless it's meant to suggest the lack of competition was but a vacuum that sucked Daft Punk to the top of the pack.

Partially, although I was thinking more of the "safe, nice choice" with a hit to boost the feel-good factor of picking it. "Africa" = "Get Lucky" in this instance.

FWIW, I like both the albums, although I think DP's is better as a complete work.

I had an epiphany that the reason I wasn't into it was because I was expecting a Saturday night record but got a Sunday morning record.

I was gonna make this exact comment when the album placed in the eoy countdown (except the "not into it" bit), thanks a lot for stealing my one and only insight jerk

You could also see the AOTY Grammy as a de facto lifetime achievement award for both Daft Punk and the supporting cast.

the best part of get lucky is when the drum machines and vocoders come in and pharrell gets faded out the picture. if this was the 80s, we would at least get a good dub mix of that.

also: none of those albums were eligible for the 1983 grammys since yknow they came out in 1983. way to go grammys not nominating albums that hadn't actually been recorded and released yet.

however some of them were nominated for album of the year the following year, where they lost to thriller...which brings us back to daft punk (and toto).

a ringing endorsement.

i think the toto win and steely dan/fagen and quincy jones albums love over the years do work as predictors for the daft punk victory. even the performance was all 'how great are studio musicians?', that's a sizeable constituency.

let's dance's rep as in any way a good album is kinda amazing, it's not much better than his other 80s fiascos and at this point i think i enjoy encountering certain singles from them - 'loving the alien', 'never let me down' esp - than i do any of the big let's dance hits.
