its a new sub-label signing European acts, if i'm correct. Three 12"s to be released in the next month or two.

I really like the other side of that Altz release, "Max Motion." Been wondering where to find it since hearing it on the Optimo Essentials mix from last year.

gr8080, Monday, 6 August 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

i started listening to the new Prinzhorn Dance School. only on like song 3. it's kinda weird. not what i'd expect from DFA. really minimal. lead by bass with drum accents (no real drum beats yet). maybe a bit Fall-ish? i'll listen to the whole thing before i make a full judgment.

jaxon, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

That band made more sense to me when someone pointed out that they're named after Hans Prinzhorn, a German psychiatrist whose life's work was collecting and studying artwork made by the mentally ill.
Anyway, yeah, ultra-minimal Fall is definitely the reference point, it would seem.

I finally did get that Shocking Pinks 12" - it's pretty nice.

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

i like the glimmers remix.

the use of Prinzhorn in that same Optimo mix is pretty great, too.

gr8080, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Prinzhorn = very Fall, very good bet for America's many fans of getting yelled at by British people

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Or, to translate that post into Prinzhorn speak:

very Fall!
very very Fall!
good bet!
for Americans and all!

shouted at by Brits!
shouted at by Brits!
shouted at by Brits!
hey! if the boot fits!

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

America's many fans of getting yelled at by British people

A+

I really like the Shocking Pinks new single too - it's got more than a hint of New Order but if all the lyrics were indecipherable and a little pouting indie.

BleepBot, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

The Arkityp remix is pretty great too.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

This shocking pinks stuff is kinda reminding me of... the field mice? It's pretty good, but nothing's really grabbing me either. But it's at least a bit unusual for the DFA.

Clay, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

b. acarpenter (joakim remix)
!!!!!! the original of this was one of my favourite songs from last year!

the altz 12" was out only in japan last year with the same tracklist.

haitch, Thursday, 9 August 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)

I am really liking all this Death From Abroad stuff. Thanks for that link.

Ben Boyerrr, Thursday, 9 August 2007 08:49 (eighteen years ago)

loving the shocking pinks album

stevie, Thursday, 9 August 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

the prinzhorn stuff is trying to be the prats, not the fall.

sanskrit, Thursday, 9 August 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Gucci Soundsystem and Bot'Ox tracks up on the new myspace now.

i take that back, this bot'ox track gets good towards the middle.

gr8080, Monday, 13 August 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

I really like the new Juan Maclean track Happy House (played on last week's Beats In Space). It's the one that goes "Excellent" a lot. Who is on vocals?

Alba, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

not really sure about the shocking pinks stuff - touches of new order are nice enough, but the vocals drag, and after starting out reasonably pretty, the songs don't really seem to go anywhere. the glimmers remix sounded quite nice though.

we talked about 'still going theme' yet? piano-house revivalism too self-conscious by half? i could see it working well in a set, i suppose, but as an exemplary example of retro-futurist perfection it's a little shaky, no? i think osborne's "outta sight" pulls off the same trick with twice the smooveness and none of the winking knowingness.

jermainetwo, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

I like that Hercules and Love Affair track

dmr, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

alba: it sounds like nancy whang (who has done a bunch of female vox on the LCD and juan material in the past). it's a great track!

haitch, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ah right - I guess I'm used to her shouting more.

Alba, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 08:05 (eighteen years ago)

no disrespect but osborne's "outta sight" ain't got nothin on either side of the still going 12". heard the both the theme and on and on at horse meat the other night and the crowd went mad at each take... i'll take winking knowingness over a so called smooveness any day!

Still Going Theme and On & On are both great but I don't understand why they'd release it in September - it's such a summer tune.

BleepBot, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha - I was just listening to the latest beatsinspace and just before Tim S played Happy House again there was another tune that sounded great and I thought "I'll look up what that was in the tracklisting later". Then I looked at this thread, got interested in talk of Still Going, so Googled them and their MySpace page had a news item about how Still Going Theme was played on beatsinspace. Turned out it was the very track I was listening to.

Alba, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

DFA $#@%! up on tha release date. Both Still Going cutz are most definitely summer tunes (guess sept 18 is technically summer). also looks like Still Going remixed !!! Anyone heard this yet?

wzee, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

I picked up the Hercules and Love Affair 12" today, which is okay (I listened to it all the way through at 33rpm, as it says on the label, but it actually should be 45rpm).

Speaking of DFA labels (actual sticker labels, I mean) - almost everything I get from them has a warped/creased or off-center label sticker. I'm sure it's a sloppy machine doing that, but it's kind of irritating.

They had a couple of the Death from Abroad 12"s as well, but they were £7.99 each, which seems pretty insane.

Ben Boyerrr, Sunday, 2 September 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

will have to check out "still going" again, i guess. 'sides all you believers, todd terje mentioned it today in our brief exchange (namedropping alert!).

jermainetwo, Monday, 3 September 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

juan maclean's HAPPY HOUSE samples 'do it now' by dubtribe i notice.
is this the early-00's-house revival gathering apace?

pisces, Monday, 3 September 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

where are you people finding that Hercules & Love Affair single? I was going to hold off on buying it until I could pick it up from DFA's insound store properly, but I don't see it available therewards or anywhere else in the US of States (I do see it available at Rough Trade, but frankly I'd rather spend my money somewhere else after staring down their ongoing reluctance to honor the gift certificates my friends got me for my birthday)

also I got all three of the Death From Abroad releases off iTunes yesterday and they're pretty good! I think my favorite one so far is the Gucci Soundsystem track - shame that there's no Joakim remix on the flip. The Altz single is completely as good as advertised too.

jamescobo, Monday, 3 September 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I got the Hercules 12" at Rough Trade. Didn't know the DFAbroad tracks were on iTunes!

Ben Boyerrr, Monday, 3 September 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Are you in the UK? Last time I checked (Tuesday) the US itunes store only had the Altz and Mock & Toof twelves available.

Telephone thing, Monday, 3 September 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

nope - I'm in the US of States

jamescobo, Monday, 3 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, just doublechecked- they do have it, but the reason there's no Joakim remix on the flip is that it's the original release on Bugged Out.

Telephone thing, Monday, 3 September 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

anyway I just said fuck it and ordered from Rough Trade - minor buyer's remorse since I live within walking distance of both Amoeba and the LA branch of Turntablelab, but this way I get to pick up the LA Priest single too.

jamescobo, Monday, 3 September 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Was the Still Going Theme actually released on Sept 18?

Much love for the Hercules & Love Affair - Roar

Really looking forward to the C2 remix of Sound of Silver, also.

micarl, Friday, 21 September 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

when's the juan maclean song officially (and unofficially) out?

NI, Friday, 21 September 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

Was the Still Going Theme actually released on Sept 18?

Not out until Sept. 25 in the States.

Telephone thing, Friday, 21 September 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

I get to pick up the LA Priest single too.

Holy shit is that "Engine" song great. I can't find it digitally anywhere, but I keep playing the 12". I like the original version best. Does anyone have this as an mp3?

Ben Boyerrr, Friday, 21 September 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

I am really loving "Babylon by Car" by Bot'Ox (http://www.myspace.com/babylonbycar). I look forward to a CD collecting all the Death From Abroad stuff.

Ben Boyerrr, Sunday, 28 October 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

a new cosmo vitelli thing, nice one.

pc user, Sunday, 28 October 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

so yeah, when's the juan maclean song officially out?

NI, Sunday, 28 October 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

I have no problems stating that my favorite DFA release this year (so far) is the Hercules and Love Affair 12". It deserves more love.

matt2, Monday, 29 October 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

anyone heard that Holy Ghost record? who is he / are they?

haven't seen the Hercules in the shops yet .... def. want to get that one

dmr, Monday, 29 October 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Hercules and Love Affair Roar/Classique - Good stuff, but not amazing. Slow chicago house-y retro-ness. I prefer that Athene track that's around, which is more, er, disco.
Shocking Pinks Smokescreen (+ glimmers remix) More cowbell than you know what to do with. Are dfa just getting all their cowbell out the way in one go?
Gucci Soundsystem Acarpenter/ Lord a Mercy Erm OK. I get the two confused, and haven't heard the Joakim mix.
Still Going Still Going Theme Yeah! A lovely dance record full of poise and funk. A four-note bassline with a blues-y piano bit then chattering synths.

How are the others?

So dfa are increasingly becoming a sort of retro house label, no? Is that OK?

Saw Shit Robot and James Murphy DJ at the Fabriclive launch thing, and had a great time. Shit Robot played System 7 and Vooday Ray and lots of old stuff. James Murphy still can't beatmatch, but it was cool, although left just as the old disco was turning into new disco (Sly Mongoose was about the last thing I heard).

Jamie T Smith, Monday, 29 October 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer that Athene track that's around, which is more, er, disco.

oh crap. yeah that's the one I like too, didnt know that wasn't on the 12"

listened to the new Shit Robot 12" the other day too, wasn't that into it

dmr, Monday, 29 October 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

LOVING "still going theme" right now

impudent harlot, Monday, 29 October 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

tho it's sold out at basically every online shop right now

impudent harlot, Monday, 29 October 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

the (two?) main guys in holy ghost used to be in automato, that undie hip hop thing that got produced by DFA a few years ago. 'hold on' is a nice breezy bit of disco revivalism; possible club hit maybe?

they have a good logo!
