can i be a real pain in the hole and side with the S/T album? the other two have never really thrilled me quite as much. i don't get quite why at all, it's definitely not me just being awkward...

Fun House. Because Ron Asheton was a better guitarist than James Williamson (knew his way around a wah-wah.) Because Dave Alexander was a better bassist than Ron Asheton. Because Steven Mackay supplied the greatest tenor sax playing on any rock record EVER. Not to mention greatest LP cover, greatest scream ("TV Eye") and the fact that it was released in 1970 (greatest year in rock, LP-wise!)

Raw Power is pretty great too, altho neither Bowie's nor Iggy's mix was completely satisfactory.

i'm sad i got rid of my bowie-mix of raw power, it'd be nice to hear again.

it would be a tightass pointscoring thing to say that iggy's raw power rules not because there's BASS but because you can hear the GLOCKENSPIEL...but really it's because of the BASS. grunge rock lives!!

i think fun house is better.

Funhouse would be absolutely fine to play at a party, what are you talking about?

if you wanna know why Raw Power is pretty crap, just listen to the 10x better outtakes from those sessions like "Gimme Some Skin" and "I Got A Right." Those two songs alone make Raw Power sound like the dogshit it is (sorry, but Bowie should be drawn + quartered for it). Not to mention "Scene of The Crime" and "Tight Pants" (which is a version of "Shake Appeal" that totally crushes the one on the album)

I still have the Bowie-mix on LP and I'll probably keep it forever since the iggy-mix is the widely available CD now. They both sound fucked to me. Bowie's is too weak and Iggy's is too OTT.
Fun House, of course, is perfect as is.

As a rule though, I don't really respect or appreciate people monkeying around so drastically with their records when they're reissued (especially 20 or 30 years after the fact) so if this was a TS bowie-mix vs. iggy-mix I would have to go with Bowie.
See also the new edition of Blizzard of Ozz with rerecorded rhythm section, the echo drums on the old ZZTop album reissues etc.
The Bowie mix is at least interesting to me cuz it's so weird. I only bothered to listen to the Iggy-mix CD a few times before I sold it back. Frankly, some parts of it were so overdriven that it just sounded like a big pile of shit - on my stereo at least.
Ah, fuck the Stooges. I'm gonna go listen to Sketches of Spain.

I've only heard the bowie mix but I don't see what's wrong with remixing the album, I'd like to think that's one of the points of the album and studios beyond just a room with nice accoustics and a microphone; that you could do these things. Otherwise just do it in one session, you know.

I'm not sure I follow you. Remixing the album 25 years later is like Star Wars Special Edition type bullshit to me, and quite a different thing than using a multitrack studio to have the ability to tweak it before its release as opposed to just cutting it live to 2-track. Let's remix Exile on Main Street and Sgt Peppers and Pet Sounds while we're at it.

wasn't iggy pretty unhappy with bowie's mix but he couldn't do anything abt it until 20+ years after release? I agree that it's mostly a con but the fact that you can do these kind of remixes a kind of a plus as far as you know, making albums.

From what I've heard of Iggy's mix, it just sounds like a generic hard rock record now. The Bowie mix is way better as it seems to be mixed only in that they probably moved faders to get at all their cocaine in the cracks of the console. I think the reason people may be down on that mix is they probably heard it as a first generation CBS CD, and those managed to make a lot of classic albums sound terrible (also see some of Miles Davis' albums and Exile on Main Street).

Funhouse is infinitely better, either way. After the first side of Raw Power that album has nothing going for it, and, as mentioned earlier, "I Got A Right" and "Gimme Some Skin" blow away pretty much anything on Raw Power.

'Funhouse' is the only 'real' record. Everything else by [or with or whatever] Iggy Pop is very strange. Like, sort of cabaret music. Why? That is very strange to me. I don't complain about it being cabaret music, I can still listen 'past' the cabaret-ness of it, but I wonder why he was never again able to make a record that was not cabaret? On the other hand, the reason seems obvious.

Does anybody else have Declaration Of War? It appears to have been some kind of ultra-limited-edition vinyl-only compilation of the best outtakes from the Funhouse sessions box. It's pretty goddamn great; the track listing is "TV Eye," "Down On The Street," "Loose," "Dirt," "Slidin' The Blues," "1970," "Fun House" and "Lost In The Future," and it begins with that great bit from the box where Iggy is imitating a wrestling announcer introducing the Stooges. I didn't even know it existed until a friend burned it for me - I've never seen it listed on the Rhino site or anything.

re: raw power bowie mix: itz tinny cuz bowie knew the bass playing was crap and the best thing to do was focus on iggys vocsa--check out the way theyr tracked. hot stuff, but mayeb more "art" than FUNHOUSEs full on Rock And Roll = Sherman Tank action. So sensations win again.
