My Bloody Valentine @ ICA, London - You Made Me Realise 13/6

90 seconds of dense, suffocating feedback with Kevin's guitar sounding like a jet engine over the top :O

stephen, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

quite a short version then.

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

Oh no, it was a 90 second clip of a ~25 minute rendition.

stephen, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

From the video description:

90 seconds of LOUD NOISE from the middle of 'You Made Me Realise', the show's closer. I wasn't prepared to film all 30 minutes of it, so here's a taster.

You can vaguely hear Kevin Shield's guitar divebombing halfway through - he was using a Digitech whammy pedal. You can really hear the harmonics of his vintage Jaguar coming through.

stephen, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

haha that last clip is total destruction

sleep, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

they should play no fun fest 2009 imo xD

It's a Jazzmaster, not a Jaguar

^ what I was thinking, but was too polite to post ^

ailsa, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

you can always rely on me for an ill-judged bout of frenzied swearing.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

watching MBV on youtube does not prove their point at all

Well fuck me fucking sideways...

stephen, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

haha even australia got to see sonic boom recently. take that glasgow!

electricsound, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

I think Sonic Boom played here last year. Grimly is just being typically melodramatic.

Alba, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

Reissues delayed again!

Weren't Ant and Dec available?

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

Re: Sonic/MBV - Maybe we'll be treated to some epic-length E.A.R. jamz w/ Kev guitar noodling!

Pillbox, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

That would be such a surprising and radical thing for Kev to do.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

as opposed to, you know, reuniting MBV after a decade and a half.

stephen, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Seeing them tonight in Camden :-)

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Friday, 20 June 2008 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, seems really odd saying "I'm going to see MBV tonight."

aldo, Friday, 20 June 2008 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

the oddest thing is listening to mbv on heavy rotation in anticipation of seeing them. its pretty much exactly half a lifetime since i last saw them.

cw, Friday, 20 June 2008 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

i see we get le volume courbe instead of spectrum tonight though....

cw, Friday, 20 June 2008 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

apparently we're getting graham coxon on monday?!

braveclub, Friday, 20 June 2008 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

Those EPs are stunning.

Venga, Friday, 20 June 2008 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

Right, so when the 2CD "Loveless" with lovely sleevenotes does come out, will it get to number one in a "Travelling Wilburys" kind of way?

Mark G, Friday, 20 June 2008 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

i've got free tickets for tonight but i'm not sure i can be bothered

DG, Friday, 20 June 2008 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

what are you, kevin shields or something?

grimly fiendish, Friday, 20 June 2008 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

oh no my cover is blown

DG, Friday, 20 June 2008 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

Grouty xpost: well, Pacific Ocean Blue is number eight in the album midweeks so who knows?

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 20 June 2008 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

really? nice one.

You know, a few years ago you'd get reissue albums do well chartwise, e.g. the Virgin reissue of "My Generation"

When the deluxe issue came out, a much better package (the Virgin one was excellent too), it did not register.

Mark G, Friday, 20 June 2008 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Who is Tuesday support band?

Colonel Poo, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

The Wurzels

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

with their version of "to 'ere knows when!"

Mark G, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

Kiss Yr fear, (oo arr oo arr)
Your red button Falls from my mouth

Slip Yr dress (oo arr oo arr)
Over yr 'ead, Its been so long

To 'ere knows when, arr,
To 'ere knows when, arr...

Mark G, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

(banjo solo)

Mark G, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

It was a bit unusual, but we all loved it.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

actually Dale's now come up with an alternative stock expression for not liking/playing a record: "they were a strange lot, weren't they?" (cf. Sigue Sigue Sputnik last Sunday).

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

I am semi-deaf and have a hideous ringing in my ears. They started off quite noisy, but seemed to keep cranking up the volume as the set went on. I forced my way into the jumping pack of loons at the front for Soon and Feed Me With Your Kiss, but You Made Me Realise (which they finished with, obviously) was just plain nasty.

Not the most stunning image, I'll grant you, but it'll do after a more than 16 year wait.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Saturday, 21 June 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

that's all I can hear

Not sure if those links will work, but there's a few seconds' worth of low-quality phone video footage of 'No More Sorry' and the 'holocaust' bit of 'You Made Me Realise' (with an extremely brief cameo by me).
