They're playing Philly - just a ston'es throw away! I'm planning to see them when they come in Feb.

queen bey backers (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 19:49 (twelve years ago)

Haha I was thinking about making that post myself Stevie.

I basically think of Baltimore as DC, considering bands usually play one place but not the other - can't count how many times I've gone up there for a show. But driving in DC ain't fun, that's for sure.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:59 (twelve years ago)

Philly show has a capacity of like 120 though and is sold out :-/

in other news I might pee when I see them

two weeks pass...

I LOVE THIS NEW "MFN" SONG SO MUCH

vylvyt ylvis (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:50 (twelve years ago)

I can't decide how much I like it yet (right now, I'm at like, not love). It's definitely not complacent - makes me excited for the new album.

Vinnie, Monday, 3 February 2014 16:19 (twelve years ago)

I keep singing it when I'm walking places.

vylvyt ylvis (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:37 (twelve years ago)

I listened to "Hotel Valentine" this morning and it really did not grab me... I'm hoping it gets better w/ repeated listens

four years pass...

Viva! LA woman has gradually become one of my favorite albums from the mid-90s. It’s quite the creative take on trip hop and I’m not sure I’d even classify it inside that genre. It’s too zany and closer to Beck than say Portishead.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 03:17 (seven years ago)

I tend to lump it almost closer to Hello Nasty era Beasties, and Grand Royale type stuff than most trip hop.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 03:45 (seven years ago)

It’s better than that shit xxxtentacion thrash

stoker (Ross), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 12:25 (seven years ago)

is that supposed to be funny, controversial or just a stupid non sequitur ?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 13:06 (seven years ago)

I know it's canonical to a lot of ppl but it still feels underrated to me, it's such a fun, funny, unique record, kind of B-52's-y in the way it manages to be silly without being frivolous or novelty bcz it is so musically skillful

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 14:22 (seven years ago)

The vocal performances are always enthusiastic which makes it feel more like punk-hop. The beastie boys comparison is apt I think.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:23 (seven years ago)

Sugar Water is one of those iconic mid-'90s tracks for me, it's got a particular haunting vibe and one of the best music videos of its time.

omar little, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 17:11 (seven years ago)

It samples Morricone and the Cure so maybe that’s where the haunting vibe comes from?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

carne if you have to ask, it ain't funny.

stoker (Ross), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 18:30 (seven years ago)

YO ANYONE GOT THAT SONG FROM THAT PRE CIBO MATO BAND THEY WERE IN WITH THE SKELETON KEY DUDE? BEEN LOOKING FOR THAT FOR YEARS. DOUG WOLK SAID THEY WERE LIKE THE BEST BAND OF ALL TIME AND ZORN WOULD PLAY WITH THEM.

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 19:11 (seven years ago)

LOL

stoker (Ross), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 19:33 (seven years ago)

For whatever odd reason I've pumped "Know Your Chicken" 5 or 6 times in the past few months and it still bangs.

billstevejim, Thursday, 28 June 2018 03:49 (seven years ago)

I stumbled into Cibo Matto by accident with I “Know your chicken”... it was back in the Napster days, I was looking for something else entirely but I got curious and downloaded it.

It was such an addictive and groovy thing... but also I was 14 and felt too self-conscious to share it with anyone else at the time. I just knew it was one of those songs that would give you weird looks from most people if played out loudly or even worse, it would get a snarky observation that might ruin the whole song for me. So I saved it for myself for years until I stopped caring.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 28 June 2018 05:24 (seven years ago)

https://youtu.be/HuNtddD8dzs

Here they are playing it live with Sean Lennon on bass in some dude’s bedroom in the 90’s.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 28 June 2018 05:37 (seven years ago)

It sounds too weird for me in rock format.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 28 June 2018 05:39 (seven years ago)

I love when they were on Squirt TV! (That was a fun show in general.)

billstevejim, Thursday, 28 June 2018 05:53 (seven years ago)

otm. Cibo Matto always reminds me of Squirt TV

Is this butter08? I bought that due to my love of CM but my young ears weren’t ready

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 29 June 2018 03:37 (seven years ago)

Nah, that was a later side project / supergroup.

just catching up to yuka's eucademix material. continues in the vein of her instrumental/wordless albums on tzadik, but a bit more flighty and psychedelic. can't recommend it enough.

she has a brand new track on this excellent north spy records compilation (which is what alerted me to the eucademix alias): https://acrossthehorizon.bandcamp.com/album/across-the-horizon-vol-1
