otoh their manifesto just confirms how much our aesthetics have diverged. couldn't be less interested in club music without melody or emotive artefacts

I kind of respect that manifesto and admire their attempt at aesthetic purity, but yeah, really not sure if it'll create stuff that's interesting to listen to.

this was a real "ambushed by unexpected emotion" album for me

on paper nothing about it should be my thing but it hits hard. the lyrics are great.

I loved Classical Curves but this is way better, although they are so different it feels silly trying to compare them.

classical curves left me very cold at the time but has actually sort of clicked in the light of this!

not heard the new one yet (why does night slugs' artwork seem so dull now?) but how could how we relate to the body or club thanz leave someone cold?

no tunes, not very hooky, not very danceable, just sort of clanky and metallic

not hooky, okay, i can see that, but those two songs had quite a lot going for them, sensual/warm textures-wise. no big tunes, sure, but enough other stuff in its place. never felt like it was dreary or lacking purpose/momentum, which is often what happens on dance albums. and if you like 80s R&B, i think you would be able to get behind them. not everything has to grab you by the balls!

but now you have the chance to! anyway, i get the criticisms of the album as a whole, but there are songs on there i think deserve to be heard in their own right. like, that kingdom track bankhead is one of the best things night slugs ever put out, and i consider those jam city songs of a piece with that. anyway, the new album seems to come with some ridiculous conceptual baggage but im hoping the actual music doesnt pay too much attention to it.

Despite the press materials dressing this up it is essentially an "angry and disillusioned young man rallies against society" album, the kind of thing that has always existed, just done differently and well.

I think Classical Curves makes more sense now its influence has entrenched itself in contemporary dance music. Not to say that it is singular and unique - there were plenty of acts doing similar things - but it exists at a very specific intersection of zones that seems a lot less unnatural now.

it's completely unlike anything on NS to date. on paper it's even less my thing but idk, the alienation and disillusion aren't just in the press materials, they're in the very good lyrics as well, and it's ultimately a very optimistic album

This sounded amazing walking through my town centre at 6am this morning while everything was quiet and serene.

one listen in, liking it a lot. possibly fucking miiiiiles off here, but there's kind of a late 80s boyband as produced by andy stott vibe, also a murkified beachy thing happening too.

It just reminded me of any number of sadsack laptop dudes who can't really sing. I really hate that big aluminium synth all over this as well.

People I know were comparing it to Disco Inferno which just made the disappointment more acute, feels like he's just gone from one pole of lameness to another.

I can hear the DI thing actually, slight shades of 'The Last Dance' with that guitar.

I can totally see the sadsack laptop dudes thing but even despite that I still think this is really great. The two things it really reminds me of are last year's Dean Blunt and Maria Minerva albums (which were my two favourites of 2014). NickB's description is spot-on.

there are loads of 80s indieish bands i've always seen old-skool ilx reference (scritti politti, blue nile too). never heard any of them apart from one scritti politti song

Disco Inferno are indieish though and you will probably hate those aspects of them.

This shit (Jam City) sounds good on random soundcloud listen but I'd need to sit with it a lot more to know for certain (and who sits these days).
