I was at that entry show too. 2000, doesn't seem that long ago.

i'm woefully unfamiliar with most of this music (despite billy batson being a dude i ended up spending a whole bunch of time with one summer, before i had even moved to the TCs permanently) (weirdly enough) but i think i might hit this?

napgenius (goole), Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:15 (twelve years ago)

The Mighty Mofos are the best live band in Mpls, now and forever, Man Sized are great, the Eagles Club is a fun place to see a show, this will be awesome

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:19 (twelve years ago)

Also, it was 2000? Christ...

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:19 (twelve years ago)

Unless they did another one since then.

Glenn Miller-core (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:22 (twelve years ago)

you're right about the eagles, i saw the final skoal kodiak show there and it was a pretty wild vibe.

napgenius (goole), Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:23 (twelve years ago)

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:36 (twelve years ago)

chr1sb3singer, Friday, 3 January 2014 16:14 (twelve years ago)

i showed up way late to that! just at the end of the mofos set. must have missed everyone i might have known, felt a little... young being there (no knock on anyone)

what was up with the weird holiday karaoke band going on in the other banquet room? my guess was, office party?

napgenius (goole), Friday, 3 January 2014 16:57 (twelve years ago)

Hah, didn't drop over to the other side. Silverteens set was HUGE fun! I wish their cover of The Bongos' "Glow In The Dark" was on youtube.

punk rocketeer (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 November 2014 17:34 (eleven years ago)

any totes pwning MPLS shows next week when I am back visiting

gbx, Monday, 10 November 2014 17:47 (eleven years ago)

Silverteens is Mark Engebretson from Whole Lotta Loves, Tippy from Man Sized, and some other scene stalwarts from that era. I posted a video above, kinda Fleshtones-like garage rock covers. I thought they were totes fun last year.

Deliciously hard yet very accessible (Dan Peterson), Monday, 10 November 2014 18:01 (eleven years ago)

Silverteens are a lot of fun. I probably won't make it to this show, but maybe.

Basically the only stage banter at all from when I saw Slint earlier this yr:

"Last time we were here we played the Uptown...Man-Sized Action!"

my brass band is throwing a New Orleans night at the Parkway Theater next month. i'm very much looking forward to playing somewhere other than the Nomad (nothing against the Nomad, i love the Nomad, but it's been years since we've played anywhere else. before that it was the Cabooze and that defunct jazz club whose name i can't remember.).

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 13 November 2014 21:32 (eleven years ago)

oh yeah that place was cool. they actually didn't seem to do that many shows for being a "jazz club" except their jazz breakfast that was kinda Sweeney Sisters type stuff but it was a nice place to hang

punk rocketeer (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 13 November 2014 22:45 (eleven years ago)

Apologies for sabotaging this thread.
As a Limey outsider looking in, surely the Twin Cities are a glaring omission from the Dave Grohl Circus?

Foo Fighters "Sonic Highway" documentary series on HBO

Back to thread, I recall loving that Man Sized Action"five story Garage' - mining that Bob Mould guitar sound? Maybe they did it first?

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 11:30 (eleven years ago)

one month passes...

significant old school mpls post punk news! (rifle sport is todd trainer of shellac's old band if you are unfamiliar)

Rifle Sport
One year after we recorded Voice of Reason at Blackberry Way, we went back to the studio to record a second album. It was never released and the multitrack and master tapes are long gone as far as we know. No idea what happened to them.
But Terry Katzman had a cassette of roughs and possibly final mixes, which he handed off to me last night and I'm currently digitizing.
Hoping to do some sort of release of it if it all turns out well. Some very cool and uncharacteristic Rifle Sport tunes. So far the recording sounds excellent.

sounds cool!

also wasn't there a pre-Commandos, pre-Suburbs band called the X-Boys that featured Chan Poling, Osgood and some other early mpls punk/new wavers?

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 8 May 2015 18:50 (eleven years ago)

Tim Berne's Snakeoil at Icehouse on Monday, which hopefully I'll be able to make it to , schedules permitting

chr1sb3singer, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:56 (eleven years ago)

M@tt, actually X-Boys came after both had broken up, I believe. (Hence the "Ex" Boys I think, although they used to consume a ton of Special Export!)

It's all 60s/70s rawk covers. They used to play The Uptown regularly, and later The Eagles in Seward. And recently at a KFAI benefit at the Turf:

Coming up for the D'Angelo show this weekend. :)))

It's been a long time since I've been in the cities without a show of my own to play, so I'd love to know if there are any hot restaurants or anything I/we should check out. How's that Surly brewpub?
