Damn, Daft Punk bringing in my namesake would have only made me love this more.

Also I still don't get the complaints about "Lose Yourself to Dance" being too slow. Is "Superstition" too slow? They're the same bpm. It's at funk tempo, not disco.
― The Reverend, Thursday, December 19, 2013 11:41 AM (1 hour ago)
^^ gets it.
― Plasmon, Thursday, 19 December 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)
"Lose Yourself to Dance" didn't fully make sense to me until I heard the CD-quality version instead of the compressed iTunes stream version.
― #illuminati (crüt), Thursday, 19 December 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)
the fullness at the low end and the crispness at the high end are really essential to that groove

I'd have no problem with "Lose Yourself to Dance" if Stevie sang it!
― the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 December 2013 18:50 (twelve years ago)
For someone reason I always hear Freddie Mercury singing it...jeez did I admit that...
― The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Thursday, 19 December 2013 18:54 (twelve years ago)
Lose yourself to Dance is fine but it goes on just a bit too long and when that 'c'mon c'mon c'mon' bit happens it sometimes sounds like the robot is bored and telling dp to get the fuck on with it and finish the song.
― a beef supreme (dog latin), Thursday, 19 December 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)
Dog latin I do think you are obsessed with robots. Do you have a fetish
― 乒乓, Thursday, 19 December 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)
I'd have little quarrel with "What Does the Fox Say" if Stevie sang it.
― Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 December 2013 19:22 (twelve years ago)
I get it but "Superstition" is a much much better song. "Lose Yourself" feels a lot less naturally funky...to me it's kinda forced in a way
― frogbs, Thursday, 19 December 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)
You're kinda forced. LOL.

The guys in the Instant Crush video who are moving about the dummies/dolls = Daft Punk without masks, I assume?

Seriously ... if you'd have told me in 1998 that Daft Punk and Stevie Wonder would be splitting a bill at the Grammys in the future and I would regard the news with a shrug, I would have slit my throat right then and there.

i know this album is not really all that cool anymore but after taking a break from it, its still quite lovely. its just really nice, in the sense of music thats empathic, kind, and seems to aspire to a kind of moral goodness, in a way i dont hear from very much modern pop.
― StillAdvance, Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:19 (twelve years ago)
I had an epiphany that the reason I wasn't into it was because I was expecting a Saturday night record but got a Sunday morning record.
Also today I imagined what this album would have turned out like had Back in the Highlife been the 80s session pop touchstone rather than George Benson.

Album of the Year nod exponentially increases the likelihood of my dream of a multi-year Daft Punk residency at the Luxor in Vegas in 20 years.
― Spencer Chow, Monday, 27 January 2014 17:09 (twelve years ago)
lol the Luxor? Why not something newer?
― SHAUN (DJP), Monday, 27 January 2014 17:16 (twelve years ago)
would be cool to have some kind of mega nightclub residency

Looking back through this list:

This is the first AOY release I've purchased with my own $ since 1987, the still topical Graceland.

"the still topical Graceland" is a good dn imo

Is Get Lucky the first time the Grammys, Pazz & Jop and ILM have all agreed on the song of the year?
― Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 27 January 2014 18:04 (twelve years ago)
historic confluence of rong
― the late great, Monday, 27 January 2014 18:07 (twelve years ago)
Well technically Get Lucky was Record of the Year, not Song of the Year.
― MarkoP, Monday, 27 January 2014 18:08 (twelve years ago)
if get lucky was released as the third or fourth single people wouldn't even notice it.
― christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 27 January 2014 18:08 (twelve years ago)
i like it but really now
That's a bold (and wrong) claim
― Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 27 January 2014 18:11 (twelve years ago)
it feels more like a nice album track rather than SONG OF THE YEAR, though i guess its ubiquitousness made it song of the year in the end.
― christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 27 January 2014 18:13 (twelve years ago)
i disagree
― socki (s1ocki), Monday, 27 January 2014 18:19 (twelve years ago)
This is quite a weird pick for AOTY, and the parallel I'm drawing is with Toto IV, in terms of an album which had one/two hits, sold well and thus giving them the award "feels right". I think in 15 years it'll be seen in the same light as giving Toto IV the AOTY Grammy.

History will view this year's AotY race as a showdown between an old-style marketing success (Punk) vs. a juggernaut of new-school self promotion (Mack), and in the end the old guard circled the wagons around the former, embodied by the unlikeliest of avatars.
― Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Monday, 27 January 2014 18:30 (twelve years ago)
Toto comparison wildly off base unless it's meant to suggest the lack of competition was but a vacuum that sucked Daft Punk to the top of the pack.
