don't forget white critic who's made his career defining what is and isn't real black culture while working at places that don't hire blacks

balls, Sunday, 15 December 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

Haha I thought about making some kind of variation on that but gave up and watched some more anime music videos instead

乒乓, Sunday, 15 December 2013 19:20 (twelve years ago)

the moral of this story is that live-blogging is stupid and always has been.

Mark, Sunday, 15 December 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)

srsly whiney tho what a bullshit post that was

of course black people watch animes, but it's definitely white hipsters leading the charge in co-opting anime imagery for their art in 2013: i.e., Elite Gymnastics/Dead Girlfriends, Laurel Halo, Oneohtrix Point Never, etc

I mean, yeah Chris Breezy will drop a single cover now and then, but anime/j-pop/etc seems like a very integral part of the predominately white Tumblr-electronics world that Kitty Pryde is assuredly familiar with

tuostprophets (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 15 December 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

This is based on extremely unscientific observations...but my place of employ does give me a somewhat unique view and I think that everyone would be surprised by how wrong the stereotype that black kids aren't into anime/jrpg/street fighter/dragonballz/etc really is

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 15 December 2013 20:07 (twelve years ago)

let's keep pretending i said black people aren';t interested in anime, that should be fun

tuostprophets (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 15 December 2013 20:08 (twelve years ago)

ffs

lag∞n, Sunday, 15 December 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

I remember being so surprised at first and feeling kind of ashamed that I was, but especially back when I first started we were still getting more letters still so you could see the postmarks and kids would send pictures because we were still doing a reader top 5 in the magazine each month

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 15 December 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

Good to know that "co-opting" is going the way of "slut-shaming" via overuse, like it can be applied to anime now?

Murgatroid, Sunday, 15 December 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

see whiney if i were you the defensive posture i wouldve taken is that you were appropriating kitty prides pov re anime culture

It's really cracking me up that in her long earnest apology she still messes up the name and says "Annie Mae" instead of "Anna Mae"

she had to apologize for not getting Jay-Z's spousal abuse joke?

her apology essay on tumblr was pretty decent, esp considering she's like 18 or something

I love whiney's comment about black people appropriating anime via white people backtracking, conclusively proven by instances of black artists using anime-like imagery

mh, Monday, 16 December 2013 01:51 (twelve years ago)

unrelated but w/e

tuostprophets (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 16 December 2013 01:58 (twelve years ago)

if i have to spell it out, there's

A) black artists influenced by anime (kanye, chris breezy, waka's "bitch call me goku", my diamonds they say pikachu, they say pikachu) because it's a popular cultural artifact like anything else

B) And then there's a specific form of predominatelty white post-Altered Zones Tumblr electronic musician (ie, OPN, Elite Gs, Laurel Halo et al), who use anime imagery for trangression/internet points/#feels that predated like Flatbush Zombies or w/e.

I might have been projecting, but I assumed Kitty Pryde was excited that Jay-Z said "anime" because he was slumming in it her world of Young Tumblr people, just like the entire blogoverse shit their pants when Jay Z showed up at a Grizzly Bear show like that validated a predominately white scene

tuostprophets (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 16 December 2013 02:07 (twelve years ago)

sorry i brought up race in the kitty pryde thread, it won't happen again

Strangers look on with a discernible, barely contained ‘wow’. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 16 December 2013 02:47 (twelve years ago)

um, i didn't get the sense that kitty pryde was "freaking out" about the anime thing because it validated her own cultural existence

i think it was entirely "lol this old rapper sounds like a total weirdo trying to make a reference to a cultural phenomenon two decades removed from his own generation"

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 December 2013 04:07 (twelve years ago)

like, pretty much a default pre-25 y/o reaction to anything. i prob do it all the time \(o_O)/

the funny thing to me is that she didn't stop for a second and consider if "eat the cake/anime" made any sense at all then think about what else the line could've meant

aka people probably shouldn't consent to having unedited liveblogs posted to web sites with millions of monthly uniques

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 December 2013 04:13 (twelve years ago)

"A cultural phenomenon two decades removed from his own generation" how new do you think anime is

CANONICAL artists, etc., etc. (contenderizer), Monday, 16 December 2013 04:25 (twelve years ago)

we had our robotech and what not but anime as a thing that lots of americans are into def seems like a millennial thing

lag∞n, Monday, 16 December 2013 04:27 (twelve years ago)

i mean adjust the timeline for however you see fit, i think my point stands

btw i know literally nothing about anime so i'm generalizing

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 December 2013 04:28 (twelve years ago)

its ok u can tell us abt ur anime
