i'm guessing Roxy M will fall sometime early next year, right?

charlie h, Thursday, 28 November 2013 02:27 (ten years ago) link

correct

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 November 2013 02:28 (ten years ago) link

Elvis Costello will close out 2013.

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 November 2013 02:28 (ten years ago) link

xps Moka did a shoegaze/dreampop poll two or three years ago.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 28 November 2013 02:58 (ten years ago) link

thanks for that Johnny Fever found it: ILM's Best Shoegaze / Dream Pop / Post-rock TRACKS poll - RESULTS THREAD

so i'm still going to do it and Dream Pop is the word i was looking for instead of White Noise. that was for singles only, so this one will be for albums. though Loveless will win it will still be very interesting.

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 November 2013 03:10 (ten years ago) link

Bee - how about albums *and* EPs? (as discussed at the time)

Tiger City of Culture (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 29 November 2013 18:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah, that's a very good idea. will do EPs as well.

Bee OK, Saturday, 30 November 2013 00:15 (ten years ago) link

Did the Costello thread go up yet?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 December 2013 23:27 (ten years ago) link

paging kornrulez6969 please start Elvis Costello when you can!

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:24 (ten years ago) link

charlie h, when you do roxy/ferry can you separate out the two in the results as shakey did with vu?

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:28 (ten years ago) link

Ok. I'm going to start it now

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 December 2013 03:12 (ten years ago) link

Now I'm a Shabby Poll: Dig the ILM Elvis Costello Poll

Bee OK, Friday, 6 December 2013 16:31 (ten years ago) link

Iago, yeah i think that's how i'll do it. would definitely be a more cohesive approach, while allowing for Roxy and Ferry to be reflected as two distinct entities.

charlie h, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 13:21 (ten years ago) link

There is an outside chance I'll need to delay the PF poll down a few weeks, but I'll update as necessary.

(the reason for this I'll eventually get to on the Aging Parents thread, but I'm still in the middle of it so-to-speak)

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 16 December 2013 19:59 (ten years ago) link

I'm not big on my frontmen idea any more (no.94), put me down in a holding slot while I think of something else - let's say George Michael for now

Ismael Klata, Monday, 16 December 2013 20:04 (ten years ago) link

Hey...if we are doing Ferry solo separate from Roxy Music, how about adding Brian Eno solo too, like we did with VU / Lou Reed/ John Cale/ nico?

kornrulez6969, Monday, 16 December 2013 23:42 (ten years ago) link

Sure, sounds like this should be done like VU--all solo included (Andy Mackay's "Wild Weekend", anyone?)

Iago Galdston, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 01:13 (ten years ago) link

Vegas has installed Triptych as a 4-1 favorite.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 01:20 (ten years ago) link

voting for Elvis Costello has been extended to Sunday December 22 at midnight (East Coast time?). get those last minute votes in!

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 December 2013 02:59 (ten years ago) link

and Ismael Klata i will update your new choice next time.

also Elvis Telecom this thing probably won't start back up until around February of 2014. of course if you need to push back Pink Floyd we can always do that so you can fit it in when you can. i might have to do the same for Steely Dan.

btw WilliamC i really hope you can take back over this thread in the new year. i was just keeping the seat warm.

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 December 2013 03:04 (ten years ago) link

Maybe. I've enjoyed the break.

diffidently worth every cent!!! (WilliamC), Thursday, 19 December 2013 03:54 (ten years ago) link

Hey...if we are doing Ferry solo separate from Roxy Music, how about adding Brian Eno solo too, like we did with VU / Lou Reed/ John Cale/ nico?

55. Brian Eno - WmC

Bee OK, Friday, 20 December 2013 04:17 (ten years ago) link

Was that eno poll including his production work, or just solo? I'd rather see it done with Roxy and Bryan Ferry.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 20 December 2013 04:33 (ten years ago) link

we will have to ask William about it. i just noticed that he was already listed at 55, so i wanted to point that out.

Bee OK, Friday, 20 December 2013 04:35 (ten years ago) link

FWIW I don't think "Slave To Love" and tracks from Ambient #1: Music for Airports belong in the same poll. Though, equally, the latter shouldn't be mixed with U2 and Coldplay. Quite happy for "Slave To Love" to take its chances against Roxy though.

Jeff W, Friday, 20 December 2013 11:27 (ten years ago) link

happy to go with the consensus on this really. Eno does seem like quite a significant can of worms to suddenly throw into the mix though. might sway the focus of the poll a little to far away from Ferry-penned songs.

charlie h, Friday, 20 December 2013 13:07 (ten years ago) link

I'd say make it a Roxy/Ferry/Eno poll. If it was good enough for Lou, Cale, Nico and VU, it's good enough for them.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 20 December 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link

I agree with Jeff W -- Eno's body of work is too big and diverse to be pulled into the Roxy/Ferry vortex, imo. It would be like Jupiter orbiting Earth. Charlie, you're free to include Eno in the Roxy/Ferry poll if you want, no hard feelings if you do, but the Eno poll will go forward anyway. Whether it includes production work or not is something I'll decide on later. It would be arbitrary to include Talking Heads and exclude U2, but...

WilliamC, Friday, 20 December 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

I agree with Eno being separate. Roxy Music may have put him out there in the beginning, but the majority of his career has been completely unrelated to those two albums.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 December 2013 17:55 (ten years ago) link

if eno's career was solely or even primarily warm jets thru science yeah sure but since it isn't including him would be clearly absurd. think the way to handle eno productions is as a side poll.

balls, Friday, 20 December 2013 18:54 (ten years ago) link

including him would be clearly absurd.

OK, OK forget I said it. Stop cyber-bullying me people. I feel like the Fat Lady of Limbourg.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 20 December 2013 18:59 (ten years ago) link

that's what we're paid for here!

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Friday, 20 December 2013 19:16 (ten years ago) link

Man it's going to be so much fun to have this debate again in 2016...

85. Genesis + solo - NickB

resulting post (rogermexico.), Saturday, 21 December 2013 05:58 (ten years ago) link

that debate was already had! i think everybody agreed that the potential/likely schizophrenia and heavy factions of the results was what made that poll attractive enough to do in the first place

balls, Saturday, 21 December 2013 07:17 (ten years ago) link

i mean i'm not sure if it's 'to our credit' exactly but i think w/ most music messageboards it'd be pretty clear if prog genesis or adult contemporary genesis would dominate whereas here it's genuinely up in the air. though it occurs to me now that probably peter gabriel solo is gonna the one thing to get a consensus.

balls, Saturday, 21 December 2013 07:20 (ten years ago) link

imo it's just going to end up weird. prog genesis vs adult contemp genesis is fun but gabriel and collins solo merit separate polls and will just muck things up. shd just keep it genesis + mike and the mechanics.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Sunday, 22 December 2013 05:25 (ten years ago) link

nbd, focus group of one, etc

resulting post (rogermexico.), Sunday, 22 December 2013 05:28 (ten years ago) link

Is the Classic Rock Canon happening? Because that will need clarification. Do ringers like The Beatles count? IMHO, if they had or are scheduled to have their own poll, they shouldn't be eligible. Ideally this poll is for Boston, Foghat etc

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 22 December 2013 15:52 (ten years ago) link

I would disagree with DQing any artists/songs in advance from the nominations list. I kinda trust the voters to recognize the adrenaline rush of hearing, say, Thunderclap Newman for the first time in five years and placing it above "I Can See For Miles" or something else that might have worn a little thin with overfamiliarity. Besides, I think some dude is going to work from a fixed list of songs based on radio play, and I imagine only the Stones would be overrepresented in that list...

so much naivete in this post, but ehhh it's christmas

millions now living will never kick out the jams (WilliamC), Sunday, 22 December 2013 16:06 (ten years ago) link

Lotta discussion of that upthread - I believe the idea is to base it on one or several big Labor Day countdowns from stations in the genre. Keeps the focus on the limited body of this 'canon' of songs.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 23 December 2013 02:37 (ten years ago) link

to be clear i never agreed to the idea of sticking exclusively to one or a few radio stations top 500 countdowns' for nominees for the Classic Rock poll -- if people send me some of those and the thing seems well stocked i might consider it, but i'm probably gonna start with that kind of base and then open things up for additional nominations.

i don't see the point in barring big bands like The Beatles -- if anything it'll be interesting to see their handful of Abbey Road/White Album-era classic rock radio staples battle it out with less canonized acts.

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 02:45 (ten years ago) link

Well, then it's just going to turn into favorite song, and God Only Knows will win.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:08 (ten years ago) link

Let me reword that: opening it up to everything will make it all beatles, beach boys, zeppelin, etc. and God Only Knows by the Beach Boys will most likely win.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:09 (ten years ago) link

i never hear Beach Boys on any of the classic rock stations i've ever listened to, they're "oldies" territory now, so they prob won't even be in the poll.

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:23 (ten years ago) link

there MAY be some kind of statute of limitations of, like, no more than the 5 or 10 most played songs by any one act, if that seems to make sense. but i think most people voting will just naturally not want to fill their ballots with A-listers and will put in just token one or two favorites anyway, which will lead to votesplitting for Zep while all the Foghat votes go to "Slow Ride."

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:25 (ten years ago) link

Classic-rock station here doesn't play much Beach Boys, but I think you'll hear "Good Vibrations," "Sail On Sailor," and "Do It Again" occasionally.

clemenza, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:28 (ten years ago) link

yeah "Good Vibrations" is prob AOR enough to get a nom. definitely not "God Only Knows" though.

some dude, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:29 (ten years ago) link

Hand to Bob, I don't think of Beatles/Stones/Zep and the big names when I think of classic rock. I think of "Slow Ride" and "Go All the Way" and "Aimee" and "Green Onions" and all the songs that make me say "oh damn, haven't heard that one in forever."

"Junior's Farm" will make my ballot, but probably not a Beatles song.

xxxxxposts

millions now living will never kick out the jams (WilliamC), Monday, 23 December 2013 03:34 (ten years ago) link

this may be the poll that finally puts Wings on equal footing with The Beatles
