Tabloid headlines have a certain vocab, probably more strongly worded in the body of the text,ie: the words sick, monster, beast, wicked etc. will be used.

a genuinely horrific case.

My uncle Jim is an Artane survivor from the 50's Eire, where state/church sponsored child abuse was a right of passage for vulnerable children. It's all the same, nothing funny about it at all. Just because it is a Welsh twat from a shit goth band in this case makes no difference, it still is unfunny.

Not the Julie London one.

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 07:02 (ten years ago) link

Blimey, did Ian Watkins pick a really good day to confess to babysex?

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 08:57 (ten years ago) link

As Watkins faces a lengthy jail term:

His distraught family described how online porn turned a ‘happy normal lad from the Valleys’ into a paedophile who ‘will be remembered like Jimmy Savile’.

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:23 (ten years ago) link

how could a paedophile ever come from the valleys, or any other rural area? i mean they are more honest places than london, their food products taste better and you can trust their internet more. it's just so shocking.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:26 (ten years ago) link

Still amazed that any paedophile would use the phrase 'Ifuckkids' to password protect their computer full of child porn. Wonder how long it took GCHQ to crack that one.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:31 (ten years ago) link

about 30 seconds because it's nine letters long, could probably brute force it in a few hours on a pentium II

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:34 (ten years ago) link

yeah, that's a terrible password on every possible front

space bl00ps (NickB), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:36 (ten years ago) link

though as azb would say, sort of seems like he was gay to get discovered here, like he really didn't seem to try very hard to cloak his depravity

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:37 (ten years ago) link

It's kind of mind-blowing. I'll admit that I'm not well-read on the thought processes of paedophiles, but it seems like he knew what he was doing was wrong and was almost revelling in it somehow? Unless his password was like some sad confession to himself, or statement of self-loathing? I don't know.

the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:37 (ten years ago) link

probably assumed he was untouchable due to status and tbh he was correct for, it seems, a good half decade - terrifying how with very little digging it becomes apparent that this was such common knowledge in the fan community

his "i don't remember any of it because i was on drugs" line is infuriating as well

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:39 (ten years ago) link

like to know more about the two or three year old claims on those shitty gossip sites that the police had already been told about his tendencies

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:43 (ten years ago) link

not even just there now, in the press too http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/ian-watkins-ex-girlfriend-warned-cops-2854744

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:45 (ten years ago) link

it does seem a bit hard to say whether the police are to blame. like the mail's line is basically "people have been saying he's a paedo for years". let's just use that to arrest people.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:47 (ten years ago) link

there is probably some via media to be found between arresting everyone ever and doing due diligence on a public figure who left a trail of evidence all over the place

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:49 (ten years ago) link

look forward to the exculpatory police complaints report anyway

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:49 (ten years ago) link

tricky enough, like, in the case of the above woman, do they start actually investigating him based on someone saying that he "said" he was a paedophile. it's a pretty serious thing to start looking into. she could be lying. i mean, i dunno how many paedos there are who don't actively commit crimes either.

i mean i guess it comes down to the question of whether the police today are vigilant enough about paedophilia. don't know the answer to that.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:53 (ten years ago) link

how could a paedophile ever come from the valleys, or any other rural area?

The valleys aren't (or isn't?) rural

Thomas K Amphong (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:56 (ten years ago) link

point still stands.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:57 (ten years ago) link

She said: “Everything changed for us when he confided in me that he wanted to abuse children in 2008.

One would hope so

Thomas K Amphong (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:58 (ten years ago) link

i would have thought that reports from a girlfriend would count as reasonable suspicion on which to investigate him?

space bl00ps (NickB), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:00 (ten years ago) link

The police almost certainly didn't take his ex's claims seriously because we know they've waved aside multiple other cases in the past, but we don't know yet whether any of the victims reported him to the police or social services until last year. The climate has changed a lot post-Saville and I'd guess victims are more likely to come forward now even the perpetrator is famous and has exerted a lot of threatening aggression.

Watkins must have been deluding himself if he thought his status made him untouchable, he's a million miles away from being a dominant public figure like Saville was.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:01 (ten years ago) link

It seems that the court's own Twitter feed accidentally named the two female defendants, one of whom is the woman named on that whodatedwho thread.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:03 (ten years ago) link

oh ffs

space bl00ps (NickB), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:05 (ten years ago) link

Watkins must have been deluding himself if he thought his status made him untouchable, he's a million miles away from being a dominant public figure like Saville was.

if someone went to police to report him and nothing happened then it's easy to see how he might get the impression he was untouchable

tpp, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:06 (ten years ago) link

And this is out in the public domain now, so no point in redacting it here, right?

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:12 (ten years ago) link

“I couldn’t believe how indifferent the police were, it was like they were taking his side and dismissing me as some stalker.

“I told Ian I had gone to the police and we argued but he was so cocky, he did not think the police would touch him and he was right.

“It was then I realised I had to turn off any feelings I had for him and turn on my escort mode.

“I had to treat him as any other client and try and get as much evidence as I could while pretending to be whatever it was he wanted me to be.

“I was determined to save more children from this monster.”

So after the police did nothing she carried on having a relationship with him in order to gather evidence or something?

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:28 (ten years ago) link

aaaand they did not buy it.

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:30 (ten years ago) link

How did he finally get caught anyway?
