this is a pure balearic shores on a warm evening record IMO

Destroyer's Kaputt is a truly timeless record; its music the score for all seasons.

the last time I was really into Kaputt was summer 2012; before that, winter 2010-1; now it's winter 2013-4... maybe I'm just on an 18-month cycle
― Not A Good Cook (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 14:10 (ten years ago) link
... but when I get a "winter" vibe off the album it's from e.g. the long instrumental intros to "Kara Walker" or "Bay of Pigs" (yes I know these are two tracks that least belong to the album proper)—a sadness like wind, whose coldness & passage across your face are more important than whatever baggage (leaves/trash/snow) it happens to be dragging around the parking lot
― Not A Good Cook (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 14:17 (ten years ago) link
also: "Poor in Love" chiming gtr reminds me of some other song that I associate with New Year's—maybe a confused subconscious U2 association?

Saw Bejar solo last week -- totally good show, though actually a bit light on Kaputt tunes (I think just "downtown" and "chinatown").

listening to Five Spanish Songs via Spotify right now. i can see why we really haven't talked about it. it's fine and all but nothing as great as his other stuff.

"In 2014, I'm going to try and make a record! Hopefully I'll have something done by the end of the year."
So fingers crossed

i wouldn't expect it to sound like Kaputt though

I'd be very happy with more ambient disco explorations and spoken word ruminations.

Love it. Also, the first verse is parodying Springsteen lyrics, right?
'Dream lover, I knowSomeone's idea of funYou and me, thoughts on cityLovers on the run'
You and me, thoughts on city... That's pretty much every Springsteen/Hold Steady lyric ever.

kinda disappointing that he's lost interest in the 'pop' of kaputt
― ufo, Monday, 25 May 2015 06:24 (eight years ago) link
I'm the opposite, all the dour-and-not-pop stuff in this interview is making me quite optimistic about this new record (I didn't care for Kaputt)
― moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Monday, 25 May 2015 13:08 (eight years ago) link
I loved Kaputt, by far the best he's done imo, but it was great in a way that could be done with a lot of different sounds. I love Dream Lover as well, so I have hope.
― Frederik B, Monday, 25 May 2015 13:12 (eight years ago) link
I love Kaputt and don't expect him to repeat it (or me to care about the band again).
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 May 2015 13:35 (eight years ago) link
Alfred, did you hear Five Spanish Songs? not sure how it would play to someone who actually understands the lyrics, but I found it an interesting companion piece to Kaputt sonically
― Heroic melancholy continues to have a forceful grip on (bernard snowy), Monday, 25 May 2015 14:05 (eight years ago) link
Kaputt is easily my favourite, and Dream Lover keeps the feel of the band from Kaputt despite kinda returning to his usual 70's-ish style so I'm quite hopeful. The press release mentions Prefab Sprout etc. which I know were a big influence on Kaputt so if that's still evident it'll be nice.
― ufo, Monday, 25 May 2015 14:17 (eight years ago) link
