rtc, you had a bit of a turn-around on shuffle now then? I'm still not fully immersed, and don't have much of a grip on artist/tracks titles yet but been vibing off those House Ent. November live sets this week, you heard them? Good stuff. All the talk upthread of post 'killer' streetsoul boogie house seems like such a great idea and I agree some tunes are moving in this direction, not sure if its quite there yet though. Love that 'Gone in the morning' choon.
― Benny B, Thursday, 28 November 2013 11:13 (twelve years ago)
only heard the lance morgan one, good energy start but seemed to tail off into linearity after 15 mins... don't feel i've had altogether too much luck with live sets really, mainly i've become diligent about radford's shows - he's not quite the marcus of shuffle but they do feel more essentially concentrated for being a touch hungrier and more varied (him tracklisting clearly also helps a lot). however yeah i'm not all in by any means and wouldnt quite yet consider any set i've heard for agnostic presentation
idk basically i was feeling like my uk aesthetics had maybe not ossified but coagulated in a way that was preventing me seeing the wood for the trees with this stuff so i p much just blasted it non stop until the arterial crit blockage was forcibly dislodged :)
and yeah must stress the s&m proposal is inchoate to the point of wishful... still though, that rhys catania tune is very striking and i did stick on the carlton album again after my last post and if u squint ur ears the palette is really not too dissimilar tbh.... maybe i'll anonymously send the 'do you dream' accapella to carnao or something for a giggle
'gone in the morning' a choon indeed, lol at them being trying to be mysterious and evasive abt whether it was donaeo! completely unrelated to this all moody dubby biz but mark radford and false identity's remix of luke burr 'inside you' (public demand cash-in cover of victor romeo) is an absolute future summer bubbler worth seeking out

that one's another textbook example of "yeah fine i get this whatever" hearing it first on soundcloud and then "urgh this tune is nasty what is it" some time later on the radio

Yup, true re: You Love Me, I heard it the other way around, first on the new Hannah Wants mix, then on it's own.

ed case 'speechless' is excellent off that, benny had it on his q homage mix a few months ago iirc
― r|t|c, Sunday, 1 December 2013 17:01 (twelve years ago)
yep, the ongaku tune on that comp is a tasty bit of house n bass too i reckon.
The tune I really want to get my mitts on is c&a's 'ironside', guess thats not coming out now though.
can't find that luke burr remix anywhere btw, any pointers? (radford's show I suppose)

muchas gracias, that is indeed great.
the lance morgan was my fave out of those november sets (the arun verone one is also worth a listen). Know what you mean about the slightly tedious linearity of a lot of sets but I thought that one livened up a bit again with that big fun remix. speaking of remixes of old rinsed classics theres this from a radford showhttp://youtu.be/_FbtBaAwhrM
back to jackin, no sooner are the words out of my my mouth when... https://soundcloud.com/causenaffect/free-download-cause-affect
hadn't noticed this one had the same vocal sample as 'kneadin'. Very similar sound palette in general in fact. Such a FUCK OFF tune <3 <3 <3 it
― Benny B, Thursday, 5 December 2013 09:58 (twelve years ago)
ha beautiful stuff. this is a freebie now too i just spotted, still the absolute nuts
http://soundcloud.com/tomgarnett11/tom-garnett-chris-lorenzo-2
funnily enough (well it's fairly logical and probably just confirmation bias but hey intersectionalism) as shuffle gains little footholds in the wider house world it doesnt seem as awk as it did a few weeks ago to talk about it and jackin simultaneously, some bits are starting to turn up in 2:31s and this mix in particular has a fair smattering of crossover
http://soundcloud.com/tom-shorterz/tom-shorterz-rinse-x-02-31-1
shorterz' own 'baby' tune there especially unexpected imo. on the other side of things shuffle has its moments too - low steppa in the audio rehab fold now for one and in the new radford set there's a brill new false identity tune called 'let the bass roll' round the half hour mark that's a zincish funk break roller i'd wager cause and affect would be proud to call their own. might rip it later tonight but the whole set's sounding as good as any to check out in full i'd say

can i just repost this btw cos i seriously adore it. my parallel universe fantasy record label has in fact apportioned a significant budget to ensure its rightful destiny as 90s dee-lite style top 20 novelty hit
― r|t|c, Thursday, 5 December 2013 11:22 (twelve years ago)
Jackin basically continues to be the best party music there is
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 5 December 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)
It's been interesting hearing Hannah Wants straddling the line in her sets between jackin and the moodier (and chartier) uk house bubblers - she never QUITE abandons her jackin roots and there's no doubt the two sides of the coin go together quite comfortably, but it feels to me like there's something irreducible and un-co-optable about straight jackin tunes, a willful narstienesss that stakes them to the underground come hell or high water
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 5 December 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)
i realize i'm tempting the gods by saying "un-co-optable" but fuck it
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 5 December 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)
lol at but <3 'annoying little dweeb', and woah this new marc spence ep is fucking sick! Remember hearing that tune 'be there' a few weeks on some show (2:31 probably?) and nearly doing my neck in. File next to the brilliant Pete Graham 'friends' release from last month. https://soundcloud.com/marc-spence/marc-spence-collaborations-ep
rtc, i haven't listened yet to the shorterz and radford sets you mention above, but you mentioning a 'zincish funk break roller' has got me thinking about early noughties breakbeat garage in relation to jackin'. The tuff steppin' n risin' bassline on 'be there' sounds like beatfreakz or blowfelt or someone. then there was all the 4x4 stuff like narrows, dj wire, dj faz etc which also often reminds me of lorenzo's sound. i sometimes think of jackin as taking those essentially flawed garage offshoot genres and making perfection out it by adding a sense of humour. mind you, has anybody done a jackin hnb version of 'I don't smoke the reefer' yet? Cos it would make perfect sense and be kinda obvious.
anyway not got much to add about the shuffle/jackin convergence til i've listened to those sets this weekend.
― Benny B, Thursday, 5 December 2013 23:40 (twelve years ago)
i suppose the very fact that dj pantha didn't really switch to jackin after bassline died, but became Arun Verone and blew up on the london scene must stand for something. Got the latest radford on now and notice he's dropping a few tunes from midlands producers too.
― Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)
woah yeah this 'let the bass roll' thing is totally c&a meets zinc!
― Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 00:26 (twelve years ago)
aaah and now that luke burr remix, this set is ace so far, probably the best I've heard from this scene 1 hour in at least. I can see a few anthems getting in the coming year, it definitely seems to be on the very cusp of something or other. must admit im quite baked atm and this may not sound so good tomorrow, but i'm really, properly enjoying this one for a change rather than just trying to like it.
― Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 00:58 (twelve years ago)
*a few anthems getting made
― Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 01:02 (twelve years ago)
definitely more varied than the sets i've listened to up to now. its even gone all speed garagey now with this lowsteppa 'benediction' remix and its all blending very nicely with the more techy stuff.
― Benny B, Friday, 6 December 2013 01:14 (twelve years ago)
Agreed. Started trying to put together an EOY list, absolutely dominated by Lorenzo and Wants.

ha yeah i'm actually mildly nonplussed by this considering i'd already gone out my way to meet shuffle on its previously icy terms... typically now i half-wonder if it might not be losing the essential run of itself a little :)

thats very thorough of you :)
haven't really been listening to radfords shows til now but if you could post one of the best ones with a tl it'd be appreciated. Would you say this nov 30 set is atypically varied and warmer sounding for him? Some of my faves on there are the icy, menacing ones from louie anderson and nightshift.
― Benny B, Sunday, 8 December 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)
yer man trilliam would likely know better than i tbh but yeah the sets have been gradually warming up i'd say - def an influx of new producer blood (from outside london probably tellingly) bringing a grimier energy vibe (showcased here to launch radford's new sublabel, although the tracks sound better still in the show context i think: http://soundcloud.com/plusrecordings/plus-recordings-promo-mix) and then yeah the introduction of the false identity and low steppa type bits has for the moment folded garagey fun back into the equation. picking up some rap samples too (where jackin of course led the way)
the 'old' guard so to speak (carnao, rs4, playtime, storm, d'vinci, louie anderson, nightshift, nrky) are still the crucial framework to the whole thing for sure though... i did actually listen to a couple of sets from february and july i still had knocking around just for comparison and in retrospect the aspects i like now probably were there then too (albeit arguably in a more mimetic chrysalis stage idk) and i'd just been uncharitable
― r|t|c, Sunday, 8 December 2013 22:25 (twelve years ago)
set picked fairly at random (they're all quite even really, although the one with the shay & sinista guest mix recently that i believe you heard was a bit of a flop imo). iirc radford accidentally coins the splendid phrase "upgrunt house" here btw

Kind of makes sense. There's a definite progressive vibe to that first Mark Radford mix that ain't far off the vibe of Oris Jay's breakbeat garage back in the day.
