Hurting, perhaps you should check out my man Tom Guarna, tons of chops but always with a great groove, plays plenty of big gigs but always super down to earth.

Pazz & Jop 1280 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 15 November 2013 04:42 (twelve years ago)

He's been gigging and recording his own project with some of your favorites in the band, Johnathan Blake on drums and Jon Cowherd on piano.

Two votes for Derek Bailey!? I demand a recount.

Moka, Friday, 15 November 2013 07:27 (twelve years ago)

Derek Bailey would object to being included in a "jazz guitar" poll probably

Indeed

RIP Jim Hall. What a career.

tylerw, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 18:25 (twelve years ago)

Damn. Sad. He wasn't that old in my mind, although in reality he was around 83.

I got to see him play at Sonny Rollins' 80th birthday show at the Beacon Theater in NYC a few years ago.

Humorist (horse) (誤訳侮辱), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)

RIP. Sorry I didn't catch him on the last tour.

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 19:16 (twelve years ago)

I saw the Jim Hall Trio two or three times, but all many years ago.

One of the few jazz guitarists I'd put up there with pretty much any musician. Kind of wish he appeared as a sideman on a wider variety of records -- would have liked to have heard him play with more different people.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

i dunno, he played with tons of people! you mean, like outside of the jazz world?

tylerw, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)

speaking of which, just occurred to me that he passed very close in time to Chico Hamilton

When Gary Larson retired from drawing The Far Side, he started studying guitar with Jim Hall. Best retirement ever.

you know, i like sharrock too and i *love* "black woman" but sharrock getting more votes than charlie christian, jim hall, tal farlow and kenny burrell put together is ultimate challops

the late great, Thursday, 12 December 2013 02:17 (twelve years ago)

I think it's more ignorance than challops tbf. A lot of ilmers come to jazz from a punk background, so they gravitate toward the freer players. Similarly, Grant Green gets 3x Wes because he plays the heavy funk, even though he's a far inferior player.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Thursday, 12 December 2013 03:50 (twelve years ago)

I like Grant Green more than you do but agree with your basic argument.

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:18 (twelve years ago)

not "ignorance", but personal taste

massaman gai, Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

i dunno, this poll is a little silly to begin with -- like, we wouldn't just do a rock guitar poll would we? have people voting either thurston moore or scotty moore?

tylerw, Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:35 (twelve years ago)

I like Grant Green ok -- he has a great sound and feel, his solos just never go anywhere and he's really limited harmonically.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:36 (twelve years ago)

Most polls are silly. This poll in particular is only silly because based on the voter turnout people probably haven't heard or let alone listened to many of these guys, personal taste or not.

i like grant green a lot but part of that i think is the early 60s blue note magic

the late great, Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

i think the complete quartets with sonny clark is just all-time incredible

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 12 December 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)

i'd probably pay for a recording of a dog pooping if it was recorded by rudy van gelder sometime between 1957 and 1961

Poo Note

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 12 December 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

Anything 60s Blue Note with Sonny Clark is particularly unimpeachable.

Lots of tributes out there about what a nice guy Jim Hall was.

Including these three by some Canadian guitarists: http://blogs.ottawacitizen.com/2013/12/11/remembering-jim-hall-i-tributes-by-david-occhipinti-mike-rud-and-roddy-ellias/

Interesting about the double-edged sword of the Griffin gig. Had to play to plate-spinners, but also Ellington and Basie.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 16 December 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)

When she asked him why he took the gig after being on the road so long, I kind of thought "Duh, you answered your own question." Anyway, he seemed like a really nice and cool guy. I found the stuff he said about his physical limitations on the guitar comforting, because I always felt the same way about my own playing -- slow, stiff hands that only get so limber even with a lot of practice.

lol I just put on his Jazzpar Quartet record, not knowing that much about it except that it was some Danish thing relating to a prize he won, and I was like "Damn, rando Danish sax player is BURNING these changes. Euro-nobodies are smoking americans these days in jazz." Then I looked it up and realized it was Chris Potter.

one month passes...

Today would have been the 92 birthday of Jimmy Wyble, who I believed I've mentioned here before, who passed away four years ago shortly before his eighty-eighth birthday. He started out in Western Swing, playing with both Bob Wills and Spade Cooley, among others- listen to his solo on the original version of "Roly Poly"- and later played jazz with the likes of Red Norvo, Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra- look for him in Ocean's Eleven and The Screaming Mimi. Later on he did tons of film and TV work, playing on the soundtrack of The Wild Bunch and The Flip Wilson Show among many others. Later still he was known as a teacher to many, many guitarists and for developing a contrapuntal approach for playing guitar. I was lucky enough to meet him once the before he died. The kind, gentle demeanor and devotion to maximizing musical matters and minimizing the attendant trappings that inspired so many were completely in evidence, you could feel it, even when he was just sitting at a table. You can read about him here http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/Forgotten_Heroes_Jimmy_Wyble although there is something strange with that link, some pages seem to repeat.

Probably be some other guitar players as well. Also was the birthday of the great nylon string guitarist Paul Meyers yesterday. Happy Birthday, Paul.
