I would not recommend seeing MBV without earplugs and I never wear earplugs (I probably should, but that's my lookout) - the only time I've worn them was when I saw MBV on their 1st reunion tour and I took them out during YMMR for a few seconds and it was ludicrous.

Loudest concert I ever went to in terms of ear-damage was JAMC in 1998 in Reading, it was a pretty small venue and I couldn't hear my own voice afterwards. I were a young lad at the time so I guess it didn't do any permanent damage.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 10 November 2013 00:26 (twelve years ago)

wear earplugs, idiots

if you have any issues of any kind with depression I really, really do not recommend tinnitus because that shit can send you right over the edge

when i saw them in nyc in '08 you literally couldn't take the earplugs out, it was amazingly loud.

the other night in boston it was mostly fine, used plugs for maybe 10% of the show.

basically plan on using them, pay attention to your body and ears and how you feel. this isn't that complicated.

These are what I had and they were good - they still changed the sound some, bit far better than regular foam ones.

Like I said above, after I lost one of my ETYs, I replaced it w/ a foam one and that ear definitely showed some damage -- hearing loss and ringing.

I don't get it, if earplugs are an essential precaution when seeing MBV then what's the point of playing so loud? All it does is enable idiots to permanently injure themselves. Or is knowing that you're in the midst of such loud volumes, albeit protected, part of the fun?

jmm, Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:15 (twelve years ago)

Simple answer - loud music hits your body as well as your ears

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:20 (twelve years ago)

imo a lot of their guitar tones are sort of contingent on being loud

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:23 (twelve years ago)

Most of the show is not, imo, any louder than normal loud shows, but the long, loud bit in the middle of YMMR is meant to overwhelming and to be felt in your body. I loved it and I wished I could it at home.

xps

Homo schaduwkabinet (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 10 November 2013 02:14 (twelve years ago)

Yikes when they are on it this is one of the best live bands, even now. I have seen them suck though. Suck or best they are fucking loud.

Do earplugs - they crank the volume throughout the show so you can't really notice it. Beautiful but beastly.

kraudive, Sunday, 10 November 2013 02:26 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I would do earplugs. There are bands that try and do an MBV-style "noise assault" and they flip on a few loops and walk off stage and let it ring and wooooh a large part of legitimizing it is the audience realization that yes this is real noise art and not just a bunch of guys that decided to let some noise go on instead of actually playing music and even that can be damaging and if I was in MBV I would make damn sure to try and make the loudest, most punishing noise ever, so yeah please do the earplugs.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 10 November 2013 03:02 (twelve years ago)

Are they playing songs from the new album?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 10 November 2013 03:03 (twelve years ago)

I am pretty sure the "wear earplugs" conversation has been happening on this thread nonstop since like May or June.

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Sunday, 10 November 2013 07:06 (twelve years ago)

So they play the same set every night?

It's a shame they don't play more from the m b v, Only Tomorrow, Wonder 2 and New You are gorgeous live.

This is sometimes referred to as the "holocaust section" or "volcano section", and usually lasted about 15 minutes, although there are reports of shows where it went on for well over half an hour.[2][3][4]

you're welcome

does anyone else think 'She Found Now' sounds very similar to Astrobrite's 2007 song 'Xero Hero (Lonely Boy)' (@45:12 in the video)? or is this just a case of all shoegaze sounding the same?
