we talked about it a lot on this thread:

Deadmau5 - Someone explain this guy's huge popularity (general C/D, RFI thread i guess)

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 7 November 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)

btw i checked out that robert delong kid that ital mentions, expecting lols, but came away kinda impressed. nothing i'd want to listen to on record but his live setup is way more live than 95% of solo electronic acts.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 7 November 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)

His record is pretty funny. It's the most 2013 thing I've ever heard.

Tim F, Thursday, 7 November 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)

totally

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 7 November 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)

it made me think of my little cousin who is 12 and makes shiny dubstep beats on his dad's ipad and i was like "well, he could have worse role models."

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 7 November 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

thanks guys. i'll check out that robert delong record. i guess it's really blowing me away that word-of-mouth can sell out stadiums. my 90s indie brain can't handle it.

isn't this just like, the postal service with sick drops bro?

the late great, Thursday, 7 November 2013 16:15 (twelve years ago)

i'm not going to bat for it, but it was less corny that i thought it would be and he's a very good drummer, which goes a long way with me. when i looked it up i was picturing this other dude who sold out a theater here, suuuuuuuper corny acoustic guitar/violin dude + wack beats.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 7 November 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)

see, he's just a nice kid who likes drum & bass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJvNGuXpZbo&feature=player_detailpage#t=323

The moombahton drops on the main single are hilair.

Tim F, Thursday, 7 November 2013 19:25 (twelve years ago)

the avant-garde unwashed masses eat shit and like it

why is this so mysterious

the late great, Thursday, 7 November 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

not trolling but: what's the difference between EDM and IDM and EBM (is that a thing)?

sarahell, Thursday, 7 November 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

idm is autechre
ebm is front 242 etc
edm is like "electronica", refers to more of the phenomenon than tbe music itself.

brimstead, Thursday, 7 November 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

i thought front 242 was "industrial"?

sarahell, Thursday, 7 November 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

Yeah ebm is basically "dancey" industrial

brimstead, Thursday, 7 November 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

an english prof i had referred to all electronic music as "industrial", which i thought was pretty cool.

brimstead, Thursday, 7 November 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

CardiacsPrincesse69xxx (Matt P), Thursday, 7 November 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

I had a case of the sick drops, but the doctor gave me some medicine and it cleared right up.

Moodles, Thursday, 7 November 2013 22:27 (twelve years ago)

I have actually listened to "EDM" based on posts I see from high school aged graffiti bloggers -- this is stuff like Deadmau5, Kaskade, skrillex, essentially "big room" house that's influenced by Daft Punk, progressive trance like Sasha, electrohouse. But a lot of it also includes dubstep, trap, and stuff I would just call pop music. I've come around a bit on the description itself, because in practice it appears just to mean dance music that despite being popular still takes on the air of being underground. It helps that it doesn't actually appear on the radio (or whatever it is people use as radios now), but I doubt that will remain so for long, since the backing track of your average Lady Gaga song could easily be an EDM anthem if you made it 7 minutes instead of 3.

Just looked up the wiki entry, and interestingly the reference stuff like chemical brothers, moby, fatboy slim as being antecedents of this stuff, and to my ears, that's pretty accurate. All-purpose dance music for young people that isn't so over-the-top poppy or dumbed-down that you can't still feel rebellious listening/dancing to it.

Dominique, Thursday, 7 November 2013 23:55 (twelve years ago)

I don't really buy Ital's assertion that there isn't a continuum between underground dance music and mainstream EDM. A few months ago I djed a queer party in an unofficial space where I opened for Miracles Club, who come out of the exact same scene as Ital. At other instances of this same underground party I hung out with Astronomar, who gets played by Skrillex and Diplo. That's not six degrees of separation, that's two.

i dunno, that seems like the continuum of ~life~, man

Tim F, Friday, 8 November 2013 12:10 (twelve years ago)

one year passes...

Has EDM gone away yet or is is still a big deal?

paolo, Thursday, 15 January 2015 21:25 (eleven years ago)

Thirty years on, still going.

Siegbran, Friday, 16 January 2015 13:04 (eleven years ago)

I'm sort of intrigued as to how one goes about becoming a massive EDM DJ anyway, the first you hear of most of these guys is when they are already huge enough to be guaranteed draw at festivals. People like Skrillex appear to go from being nobodies to absolutely gigantic within about 30 seconds but at least that's off the back of releasing some records, whereas I genuinely have no idea how you go about becoming Steve Aoki.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 January 2015 13:15 (eleven years ago)

Billionaire father and model / actress sister probably help in that regard. He was a fixture on the NY club scene more through favours from friends initially, i'm led to believe, but has done exceptionally well for himself in Vegas, etc since.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Friday, 16 January 2015 13:30 (eleven years ago)

still can't get over a) Guetta making around $30m last year and b) Calvin Harris making over double that

nashwan, Friday, 16 January 2015 13:30 (eleven years ago)

a) had five big hits last year, b) double that.

the amount of electronic musicians having twitter feelings about that video betrays massive insecurity about what they are doing as artists and entertainers

Sad Dad House (Thee Macallan 18 Year), Sunday, 31 March 2019 17:31 (seven years ago)

otmfm, it's such a tired and bad look to get trenchant about 'empty dj personalities'

lol ok but it's like an hour's walk to downtown miami

Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 31 March 2019 20:34 (seven years ago)

The Long March, they called it.

Somewhat disappointed that this 'chaotic crowd exit' was not related to DJ Sanders, but on a different day.

the guy should have kept the colonel mask on and marched them to a kfc imo

lol @ sherburne working himself into a froth over this on pitchfork

oh no

I will have to read that eventually but I’m going to stick with laughing my ass off right now

https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/colonel-sanders-at-the-rave-kfc-presence-at-ultra-music-festival-was-disturbing/

Mostly just proud of how far SOPHIE’s come to be the example of pure innocent groundbreaking dance music in contrast to the Sanders set, as opposed to if this had happened in 2015 or so wherein we’d have to endure a paragraph’s worth of Sherburne attempting to tie this all together into a thesis about “ironic capitalism” or whatever

You can't see it but I had an epiphany (Champiness), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 05:35 (seven years ago)

The problem with hot takes like this is that this phenomenon isn’t new, these lamentations that EDM is ‘too commercial these days’ have been going on since the 80s. Nobody expects good music at some corporate festival in Miami for rich kids, that’s not what these events are for. 25 years ago novelty tunes like Smurf House were in the charts, at the same time that Basic Channel and Eye-Q were active.

Also holding up the appearance of SOPHIE as supposedly raising the credentials/relevance of this festival is an odd take - I mean clubs like Tresor, Shoom or the Paradise Garage a did not need to sandwich a pop act like Bananarama or Ace Of Base between their DJs to be relevant.

kind of want to cane some trashy edm/brostep on runs. anyone wanna recommend a decent compilation < 120 minutes?

crystal-brained yogahead (map), Friday, 22 May 2020 00:59 (six years ago)

i'm cautiously curious about this

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 22 May 2020 09:14 (six years ago)

i'm almost certain i'll hate the answers but there's certain bits and pieces of prog trance (and trance.... step??) that cross over with tribal and electro that i have found myself kind of decadently enjoying

bumping this for basically the same request: can anyone point me to a fairly recent halfway decent EDM set? does such a thing exist?

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Thursday, 20 May 2021 21:21 (five years ago)

the Swedish House Mafia albums are still by far the best of the genre.
would love to get pointers to anything more recent.

nine months pass...

i've been following local facebook groups centered around edm where i live (utah). a few observations.

a LOT of people are into edm here (one of the main groups has 3.6k followers)

the "production companies" that feed the scene are fairly well-developed. it seems like a fair amount of people are getting paid full-time salaries.

big festivals almost quarterly. local weekly scene nights on both tuesdays and thursdays (both well-attended).

the vibe seems to be about keeping things as happy and positive and friendly as possible. at the root of this is an outlook and sensibility that is about maintaining innocence.

the scene seems to be "post-racial" in the sense that it's obviously very white but poc especially latinx are encouraged to participate if they don't rock the "colorblind" boat.

the music mostly sucks.

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Wednesday, 16 March 2022 16:39 (four years ago)

there is sharp edm out there for sure but like jam band scenes dullness is a big part of it

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Wednesday, 16 March 2022 16:43 (four years ago)

I feel like a lot of EDM I've heard is based on the principle that there must be a massive break and build up every 30 seconds

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 16 March 2022 16:53 (four years ago)

definitely a key feature
