Bob - that's an amazing story, thanks for sharing it. And thanks for the great music. I think you're right about John going straight for the stuff he didn't know.

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

i really like those two the negatives punk songs and the relaxing rock & roll of the nightcaps which comes after. very nice. i think i slowly get into the mood for the box. as tracer i had and still have some reservations concerning a couple of songs but overall this is excellent stuff i would never have listened to without this thread. thanks for everyone participating.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

thanks to everyone participating, of course. sorry for my terrible english...

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Bob for your story (and for wanting the music to be shared)!

patita (patita), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

I was contacted by Chris Leeds, drummer on the Coronation St single. He confirmed that it should be credited to the I-Royals and not Izzy Royal (quoting his email):
"It turns out that it is the record I thought it was - the single was passed on to Warners after we made it, originally on the Media Marvels label -when WEA took it over they decided to change the name for some reason.

Yes, I am extremely chuffed to be in JP's personal collection - but I
wonder if he, or anyone else realises it's not a Jamaican thing - though it's listed on a few internet sales sites as that - in fact it was made in London, and mixed by Dennis Bovell's studio guy."

He thinks the label changed the name so as not to be confused with I Roy.

Great story Bob.

Only adding: bear in mind that they probably did dig out stuff they didn't know, but the documentary needed the anecdotes from the stuff they did!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

Can anyone post the documentary?

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh right. Thanks for the info.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

So, by the looks of things, all this (when complete) would fit on one CDr.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

mine filemanagers saying its already 800M (i'm missing the electro hippies peel session btw. this is a hint) so i guess not. maybe if you down-encode some of the files it'll be ok (it tickles me that the record with the most surface noise here is encoded at 320bps)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

Well, I got singles 1 to 70 on 384MB, guess the others are bigger.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

are we not still missing 121a+b (the versatiles – cutting razor/black belt jones) as well?

keefus (keefus), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Nope. Not missing. Would you like them?

Hooton 3 Car - Numena (043B)

http://s9.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1S76V37QMM7V93EXRL54KQCARO

CT, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

So of the remaining A-sides...

047 Jerry Byrd - Memories of Maria

can be found on a very cheap "country instrumental" compilation CD, which i'd be glad to pick up soon unless someone has the actual 45 (the b-side is not included in the CD)

072 Nilsson - Kojak Columbo

is on a pretty bad Nilsson record called "Duit on Mon Dei", again available pretty cheaply, I think.

081 Revelino - Step on high

I think I recall someone saying they had this..if not, the CD single is all over the place.

086 Sasha Caro - Grade 3 section 2

Very curious about this one--don't think it's ever been anthologized. Caro was a Cat Stevens protege.

090 Sipho Bhengu - Tickey dopies

my vote for hardest single to find on the list

C. O'Leary (jparker), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know if Lee Perry "Black Belt Jones" is from that 70s Kung Fu Movie of the same name? I have it on video, but my VCR is busted, so I cannot investigate and IMDB was useless.

Matthew Walker (thatkid225), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

my vote is that the lee perry single (like a lot of his stuff from that time) was influenced by the movie
there is also loads of upsetter/perry stuff similarly inspired by spaghetti westerns…

keefus (keefus), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

The Cleveland Crochet B side is available on CD, if anyone would like more cajun music in their collection (or knows someone who might have these):
http://www.louisianamusicfactory.com/showoneprod.asp?TypeID=59&ProductID=3635
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005YAFW/yahoomusic2-20/ref%3Dnosim/103-7831091-0047023
The original 45 is quite a collector's item, as it was the first Cajun song to make the Billboard 100.

I'm pretty sure someone has the Revelino, and that it is en route?

I'll second the vote for Sipho Bhengu being the hardest to find. If anyone has South African or New Zealand contacts (he was popular there, it seems), this is the time to call in a favor.

patita (patita), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

> 081 Revelino - Step on high

it cost me 79p (plus postage) but hasn't turned up yet...

YSI is giving me errors 8(

(i've just emailed Andy Kershaw about sipho benghu, to see if he knows anything)

dunno if its the same sipho bhengu(!) but google comes up with…

PRESS STATEMENT BY INKATHA FREEDOM PARTY

MURDERED IFP MAYOR TO BE BURIED ON SATURDAY

Durban: February 17, 2005

The IFP's KwaZulu-Natal Spokesperson, Mr Velaphi B. Ndlovu today announced that the Mayor of Imbabazane Municipality, Mr Sipho Bhengu, who was shot dead last Saturday evening, will be buried on Saturday, 19th February 2005.

The funeral will take place at his family home, KwaDlamini, in Ntabamhlophe and will begin at 10h00. (Ntabamhlophe is approximately 20 km's outside Giants Castle in KwaZulu-Natal.)

A high ranking delegation of IFP leaders will be present at the funeral to pay their last respects to Sipho Bhengu who has always been a shining example of what true service to the community really means.

The delegation will include the IFP's National Chairperson Dr Ziba Jiyane, the Secretary-General Rev. Musa Zondi, the Deputy Secretary-General Prof. Themba Msimang, the IFP Women's Brigade National Secretary Ms. Zanele Magwaza and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Spokesperson Mr Velaphi Ndlovu, among others.

keefus (keefus), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

keefus, I'm sure it's not the same, as our Sipho died during a performance:

http://www.artsmart.co.za/music/archive/1892.html
"Sipho Bhengu (41) surely died the way he would have wished - in the middle of a concert and without any major trauma. He was appearing with the mbaqanga group Soul Brothers at a concert at King’s Park stadium to celebrate the first anniversary of Isolezwe, Independent Newspapers’ Zulu-language newspaper.

Soul Brothers was the last group on the programme and afterwards Sipho asked another member of the group to support him because he suddenly felt dizzy. He then collapsed and died before the emergency services arrived. "

I've got some other info about him if you scroll up, including a warning to googlers that there's another Sipho Bhengu.

patita (patita), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

What's funny - as I'm sure at a couple of you have realized - is that a google search for "Tickey Dopies," the Bhengu A side, only brings up a handful of items and all of them are related to the Peel box. So a search done a month ago would have yielded nothing! Hopefully Kershaw writes back.

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i'm wondering if it's another mis-spelling or something.

i'll happily chip in if someone wants to buy that cajun cd. i can do paypal but am geographically challenged when it comes to buying american cds (postage and insurance costs on that one site effectively double the price of the cd)

that nillson cd varies wildly in price ($11.40 - $30.00):
http://www.amusicarea.com/detail/743219502421.html
but, again, i can chip in.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

The Cajun comp looks good, I have no problem buying it. I wouldn't be surprised if a friend has it though - if not, I'll get it.

Scrugg's "Real Geraldine" is on this comp.

Detour Records have put a page in deication to the negatives single as the inclusion in John Box has attracted a few enquiries for them. Link attached if anyone wants to see what the original 45 looked like. I know this is a big request but if anyone could repost any songs that haven't appeared in last 7 days, I would be very grateful.

Can't explain why, but I love the Mighty Avengers track. The White Stripes are everywhere, but they are just so ******* good!!!

http://www.detour-records.co.uk/negatives.htm

Bob Robinson, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Please ignore if you wish, but didn't know this page existed. The follow up band to the Negatives. Main reason for posting is it has a picture of a bit of the actual mixing desk on which "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division was recorded.

you are right, you are asking for a lot there. just tell me three songs you'd like to have reposted and i will try my best tomorrow morning.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Good heavens - I've just found all this - what a fantastic project. I'll very happily buy a compilation with the Scrugg song on as my contribution, if no one else has already ordered one. And I've got the Revelino 7" - so let me know if the one on order doesn't show up!

Dan Butt, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the offer. Three from anything not posted in the last seven days would take me three nearer to the set. Possibly something like Golinsky Brothers, Galactic Symposium & Charlie Feathers would be excellent as I don't know any of them. Like your listed tastes in music by the way.

Out of all the tracks available on John's Dandelion label, he urged me to listen to "The Asmoto Running Band" by Principle Edwards Magic Theatre. It may not have been a 45 and hence not in the box. He thought the song was slightly insane but strangely wonderful. It's worth a listen!!!

Regards

Bob

Hi Dan Butt - welcome! The more people helping the better. Go ahead and buy the Scrugg, I don't think anyone else has gotten to it yet. I'll be getting the Cajun Comp, like I said, with "Drunkard's Dream" but I don't expect to be able to YSI it for another week and half or so.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I have a zip of all the songs as of a week of go or so. Zipped it is 665+ mb. I tried to make a yousendit, but to no avail. I'll try and make a newer and yousendit if possible.

Looks like the Mel and Tim B-side has never appeared on CD - are the Stax-Volt singles boxes only A-sides? (So much for being complete.) The single can be had from any number of places though.
