oh noes not the dev lurgies. idk those first three sound perfectly of a piece to me, surely occasional ploddingess is the very hallmark of sulky juvenilia? like even if his involvement were the case those are all looks he glommed off 90s ogs in the first place anyway so it's not an issue in this context really.

tbh without the groundwork laid down by those first three it's not even half the record imo, regardless of their individual quality

Examples or it didn't happen. I think this particular kind of ploddingness is a distinctly post-2000 phenomenon really, there's a lot more fire in the even the most generic of the 90s acts we're discussing.

look at this narc shaking me down for deets. it's the vibes bro

A friend on Facebook said Live Through This meets Erotica but surely it can't be THAT good.

hang on .. is that referring to madonnas erotica, or the darling buds ?

given the references to jamc/ravonettes etc, i am hoping its the darling buds as i could really do with more of that kind of stuff.

Melody of "Boys" is very "Common People"

monotony, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 14:05 (twelve years ago)

Anyone else think the first three songs are by miles the weakest here

"boys" is awesome imo, great chorus

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 30 October 2013 14:08 (twelve years ago)

Totally agree that the second half of this stronger, I actually think from Omanko onwards is just about perfect. The first five songs are good but seem throwaway compared to what comes later. Those first few songs in particular remind me of Ladyhawke (on her first album when she was almost great)

Serious album of the year contender for me already.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 31 October 2013 03:44 (twelve years ago)

i really like every song on this now

Really? But..."I Blame Myself"...

monotony, Thursday, 31 October 2013 10:09 (twelve years ago)

i would semi-agree with matt dc on "first three" but more in an rtc sense of them setting the groundwork v effectively before the album really lifts off with "nobody asked me..."

this album is very consistently good after that but if there's a standout it's "i blame myself" for sure

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 October 2013 10:16 (twelve years ago)

idk if i'm in a mood today or w/e (tbf i was never like this album was anything higher than a 7, point... 4?) but right now i'm realy feeling like every song could stand to be a minute shorter and snappier

what new wave / no wave thing is 'omanko' specifically reminiscent of, like the melody? wanna say the waitresses or something but it's not

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 October 2013 11:35 (twelve years ago)

(nb except 'you're not the one', that has my permission to go on for ten minutes)

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 October 2013 11:39 (twelve years ago)

I think I just hate it when songwriters remove the slightest bit of rhythmic interest from vocal lines, like even the rhythm of natural speech patterns is removed, so it just sounds clumsy and awkward. It makes it difficult for me to rate any song that does that.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 October 2013 11:50 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, there's a weird dead flat to the beat vocal craze going on at the moment. I think Losing You by Solange is the best example of this, it's sung at if it were quantized. If used well this vocal thing can be interesting but it often makes the track feel sterile. Part of the reason that Haim album is so fun is the top line melodies.

Popture, Thursday, 31 October 2013 12:00 (twelve years ago)

blame the arcade fire xp

乒乓, Thursday, 31 October 2013 12:40 (twelve years ago)

OK, I went to listen to this, finally, and saw the title "Heavy Metal Heart" and played that first, and now it's half an hour later and I haven't moved on to the rest of it yet.

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 31 October 2013 15:05 (twelve years ago)

"Omanko" has an "OLV 26" vibe

J. Sam, Thursday, 31 October 2013 15:21 (twelve years ago)

there are def rhythmically interesting vocal lines on this album, like on "kristine" in particular

dyl, Thursday, 31 October 2013 15:27 (twelve years ago)

― J. Sam

Yeah I can see that. I was thinking Broadcast when I first heard that one, probably explains why it's my favourite song at the moment.

Totally take back what I said about the first five songs sounding a bit throwaway, they've grown on me a lot. This is a great album!

Kitchen Person, Friday, 1 November 2013 03:25 (twelve years ago)

Also did the CD of this get cancelled? Amazon no longer has a release date listed.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 1 November 2013 03:29 (twelve years ago)

i guess vinyl's out of the question too

(emphasis Treeship's) (Treeship), Friday, 1 November 2013 04:41 (twelve years ago)

apparently she said on facebook that she's trying to put out a vinyl version herself? the post was deleted tho so who knows if it will actually happen: http://www.gigwise.com/news/85450/sky-ferreira-to-self-produce-album-vinyls-after-label-refuses

dyl, Friday, 1 November 2013 07:16 (twelve years ago)

I Will on repeat x 1000

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 2 November 2013 00:01 (twelve years ago)

The CD might be this coming Tuesday if we're lucky- that's the release date for the mp3 version on Amazon, anyway, and I suspect this might just be down to iTunes exclusivity for a week.

CAROUSEL! CAROUSEL! (Telephone thing), Saturday, 2 November 2013 00:16 (twelve years ago)

Now that I'm listening to this I get quite a strong No Doubt second album vibe from some of this.

It's good!

Tim F, Saturday, 2 November 2013 00:43 (twelve years ago)

"Love in Stereo" is my jam.

Also, who knew John Norris was still on tv.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 2 November 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)

a lot of this sounds like some part-sparkly, part-meaty 1990s alterna-album that impresses a lot on first listens but then gets shelved for the duration. some of it sounds quite a bit better than that. i'm probably the 1,000th person to say this but a bunch of the songs are pretty underdeveloped.

her voice has a lot of character though, which bodes well.

if this ever comes to spotify soon maybe i'll listen

yep

dyl, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)

i do not like this record even a little bit anymore, aside from "you're not the one" and kinda sorta "i blame myself"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 18:18 (twelve years ago)

Oh well.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 18:19 (twelve years ago)

I am in the exact same boat as Brad. Altho I semi-like Heavy Metal Heart and Aint Your Right too. Very weak overall, not the kind of sounds I was expecting or wanting. Sad cos Ur Knot Tha 1 is an unparalleled belter.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 18:26 (twelve years ago)

I think "24 Hours" is the only weak link on here.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 19:04 (twelve years ago)

^ musically, it's def in my wheelhouse, but as a whole it seems really janky and trite.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)

For contrast: I think this is an album-of-the-year candidate.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 19:21 (twelve years ago)

I don't have many candidates, so this would be one of them.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 19:25 (twelve years ago)

Yeah this is up there for me, probably just behind the Goldfrapp album for album of the year.

Don't really think there is a weak link but Ain't Your Right is probably the only song I kind of forget about. My favourite song on here keeps changing but right now it's I Will.
