Do you have a preference to indoor or outdoor shows? Your last NYC-area shows were outside at All Points West.

Yeah, that was interesting. Thousands of Tool fans screaming at us, they didn't understand what was happening. They were very upset and offended. It was pretty amusing. I just remembered the audience -- it was that rare perfect sound, with 50% of the crowd cheering you and the other half screaming for you to get off stage.

i just love how sensory kevin shields interviews are, like the parts in the mcgonigal book about him & his sister when he was a kid. or like in this, when I moved to Ireland, it took me a long time to see things as real there. I don't know about vomiting, but I have a friend who had to leave during You Made Me Realise because it was making her nauseous.

I've become a bit of an advocate for wearing earplugs to shows in general, so I certainly wouldn't risk it with MBV. Hearing is much too precious. With the right earplugs, the music can sound just as clear but at a safer volume.

what about those ear protectors workmen wear?

I’ve said it a million times before, but any music man who listens to loud PAs, live or clubs needs to get proper moulded earplugs like these http://www.etymotic.com/hp/erme.html or these http://www.acscustom.com/uk/ . Yes they cost a little, but imagine not being able to listen to music when you are older? Not to mention the cost of hearing aids which you will need to wear all the time, not just for a few hours a week Best investment you will make.

20 years ago I wouldn't have believed I would see MBV live, but I did last night. I'm a pretty happy guy today.

What's more: if ear damage were limited to hearing loss that would be one thing...problem is the lack of input tends to get compensated for by non-stop high-frequency ringing (i.e., tinnitus). Seriously, not fun. Sorry to be a party-pooper, but it's my duty as one of the resident geezers to warn all you kids.

I had some hifi earplugs, but I lost one of them about 3/4 of the way through the show and used one of the foam ones provided at the venue.

Sound quality was much better w/ the fancy ones, but the huge difference was in hearing loss. Afterward, the ear w/ the cheap foam plug sounded muffled and I kept trying to make it pop. The other ear was pretty much normal.

Took my earplugs out for about a minute during YMMR and it was absolutely unbearable.

I've had tinnitus since I was 21 and for a while it provoked almost panic attack-level anxiety. I had read an interview with Pete Townshend where he said that tinnitus "made him want to kill himself" and I imagined a progressively worsening high-pitched wine that would eventually block out all other sounds and make sleep impossible. Really, it's pretty much fine. It's just like having a TV tuned to nothing on in the background wherever you go. It just sounds like electronics or AC power and really, when are we not surrounded by these things anyway? Alcohol worsens the effects of tinnitus, but also knocks you out before the tinnitus can keep you awake, so it kind of doesn't matter.

I'm not sure I was so bothered by the loudness of MBV. I think my ears have already pretty much ruled out any of the frequencies being played.

Really, it's pretty much fine.

YMMV to the extreme when it comes to this disorder, as other threads on ilx will attest.

can you get tinnitus from one mbv concert? how often do you need to be exposed to extremely loud noises to get this?

Tinnitus is not just chronic, it's also the short-term ringing in your ears after loud shows. So yes, you can get it from just 1 show.

There are ppl who got it permanently from being near a single gunshot or explosion. Dunno if one concert length exposure could induce a permanent effect or not. It's probably happened.

Seeing Curve on the Cuckoo tour was my scared straight moment w.r.t. wearing earplugs. I may not always wear them, but I do take them with me to shows just in case.

those Ety earplugs are what I use and in my opinion they're as good as you can get if you aren't going to have something custom made. they did the job for MBV.

Wow,I saw Curve at least three times, but I don't remember them as remotely unbearable. Nowhere near MBV a couple of years ago.

Most ear ringing shows I've seen otherwise were arena metal. NIN in 94, Metallica in ... 98?

4.5 hours!

I saw Swans in January at ATP Melbourne - they set up 18 amps on stage and 2 full kits, then laid into them with abandon in huge searing waves of attack. Figured I wouldn't need protection, set was loud and I could feel my clothes flapping a bit but it seemed just-barely-OK. After the set my ears were the most wrecked I've ever experienced, everything around me sounded like a broken radio for half an hour. Scared the hell out of me. Hearing seems relatively normal but I am sure the damage will show up in a few years - won't be taking that risk again.

I would not recommend seeing MBV without earplugs and I never wear earplugs (I probably should, but that's my lookout) - the only time I've worn them was when I saw MBV on their 1st reunion tour and I took them out during YMMR for a few seconds and it was ludicrous.

Loudest concert I ever went to in terms of ear-damage was JAMC in 1998 in Reading, it was a pretty small venue and I couldn't hear my own voice afterwards. I were a young lad at the time so I guess it didn't do any permanent damage.
