wait, so why was the Australian dwarf girl lying in a pile of clothes in a spare room in Portland? Was this real or some sort of alt 90s apparition?
― sarahell, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 19:44 (twelve years ago)
Like I said to the Forbes guy, we take care of each other. It’s complicated. And beautiful. But very real.

I didn’t tell them about the death threat until much later, while I was playing in Susan’s shag-carpeted basement. A neck rub circle had started. We collapsed in uncontrollable laughter singing Nine Inch Nails songs with misheard and alternative lyrics about cats, then I played some sad ukulele songs in the pitch dark and a quiet, tall boy with a moustache leaned into my ear and whispered that he’d just lost somebody.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails recently commented on the crowdfunding culture: “I’m not super-comfortable with the idea of Ziggy Stardust shaking his cup for scraps,” he said. Ziggy, the fictional icon? Clearly not. But early Bowie, the tech pioneer? Quite likely.
Bowie is a tech pioneer?
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 20:58 (twelve years ago)
Ziggy had some pretty high tech haircuts and jumpsuits
― Moodles, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)
maybe she's referring to the fact that he did an interactive cd-rom for one of his albums? tech pioneer in terms of marketing?

As I tossed my ukulele on to the bed, I saw something move in the corner of the room. It looked like a pile of clothes. I went closer. The pile of clothes was Yana. She was lying on the floor, wrapped in a blanket.“You OK?” I asked. “Don’t you want to lie on the bed instead of the floor?” I felt helpless.“No . . . I’m good,” she said.I put my hand on her cheek and looked down at her. I knew those eyebrows so well by then. I wished I hadn’t fucked them up so much. I pulled the blanket over her shoulders.
amanda palmer gets pretty stoked on taking the bed while her fans sleep on the floor, this is the 2nd anecdote she's given where this has happened iirc

This could be the start of a novel. Clearly she should write a book. About a character named "Pamanda Almer."

Her business model seems to be based on being around her fans all the time. Not sure how appealing that would be for many artists.

She used to admit that only certain personalities, ie ones allergic to privacy, could thrive in this way but I'm not sure if her post-TED utopianism allows for caveats.

We created a surreal scene featuring a moon man playing the piano and a killer rabbit in a hot-air balloon, while Chanie and her husband sat on the floor of the empty nursery, chatting with us about bad films, sibling feuds and how family can be impossible.
Is this an insult?

Bowie had some kind of Wall Street bond issue on sales of his album catalog that made the financial news back in dotcom days
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 31 October 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)
Bowie Bonds are asset-backed securities of current and future revenues of the 25 albums (287 songs) that David Bowie recorded before 1990. Bowie Bonds were pioneered in 1997 by rock and roll investment banker David Pullman.[1] Issued in 1997, the bonds were bought for US$55 million by the Prudential Insurance Company of America.[2][3] The bonds paid an interest rate of 7.9% and had an average life of ten years,[4] a higher rate of return than a 10-year Treasury note (at the time, 6.37%).[3] Royalties from the 25 albums generated the cash flow that secured the bonds' interest payments.[5] Prudential also received guarantees from Bowie's label, EMI Records, which had recently signed a $30m deal with Bowie.[3] By forfeiting ten years worth of royalties, David Bowie was able to receive a payment of US$55 million up front. Bowie used this income to buy songs owned by his former manager.[4] Bowie's combined catalog of albums covered by this agreement sold more than 1 million copies annually at the time of the agreement.[3] However, by March 2004, Moody's Investors Service lowered the bonds from an A3 rating (the seventh highest rating) to Baa3, one notch above junk status.[6][7] The downgrade was prompted by lower-than-expected revenue "due to weakness in sales for recorded music" and that an unnamed company guaranteed the issue.[8]

Definitely a case where it paid to be the innovator because nobody was going to get money that way again.

I feel like Amanda Palmer is the only famous musician who would end a self-aggrandizing story with her exiting a room leaving a crippled girl alone in the dark and on the floor huddled under rags, the latter's 10k still in her pocket.
