for me, when it comes to comeback album (esp. 22 years) im expecting absolute shit. so its lovely to be surprised with not only an album thats decent but an album thats got a few tunes that are up there with the best of their stuff.

most of this was recorded in like 1995 though iirc, so in that way it makes sense that a lot of it seems similar in quality to loveless

Is that confirmed tho? I just kinda assumed most of that stuff from 20 years ago was rerecorded or evolved into something way different

most of the stuff i've read about the recording is inconclusive. i know that the first track is the only one that was totally recorded after 2012, and i am pretty sure most of the other ones at least contain elements that were recorded before the band's breakup in 2007, in some cases way before then.

i mean its obvious that some tracks are written soon after loveless or around that time (HELLO DRUM N' BASS INFLUENCE), but it doesnt really matter when you listen to the album tbh

i used to listen to a JAMC bootleg i had through an 8os datacorder cos that's how it sounded best.

Am I making this up or do they supply earplugs at their shows? I'm going to see them on Sunday w/ a friend who has no earplugs and will probably forget to buy any.

they were handing out earplugs when I saw them in Denver and I've heard that they did the same elsewhere. and earplugs are absolutely necessary.

with earplugs does the volume level still seem crazy? i've never worn earplugs to a gig before but i bought a pair for this show. i am thinking they are really loud but the talk of people vomiting due to the volume and stuff like that is a lot of hype.

people vomited? wow, that seems a little extreme

you should be fine if you have earplugs. worth taking them out for a few seconds, at least, during YMMR to experience the craziness uninhibited.

also, i saw them twice earlier this year and there were earplugs on both occasions provided.

You will be pretty fine with those unless you are standing right next to the PA. The best 'budget' earplugs around, miles better than foam things.

During the soundcheck at a Coachella warm-up show several years back, one of the venue staff suffered a seizure and paramedics were summoned. Those of us in line took it as a sign that the show was going to be pretty special.

I have fond memories of three electric fans and finally two roadie-waved cardboard sheets trying to calm down a self-immolating Vox AC30 from Kevin's rig at the Melbourne ATP this year.

not trying to sound hard here but when I saw them this summer I didn't need earplugs. although maybe that's cos my hearing is fucked anyway

When I saw them in Denver this summer it honestly sounded better with earplugs. It also didn't seem that loud when they started, but trust me, it's loud. I think they either increased the volume gradually throughout the show or just the lack of dynamics/constant volume might have added up to almost physically exhausting me and my ears. Also, my sternum felt like it was rattling around in my ribcage during the holocaust section and afterwards.

they def slowly cranked the volume last time i saw em, the last three songs were v v loud.

i tend to alternate earplugs/no earplugs at noise shows. any tickling sensation and i'll put plugs in. it's fun to move about the venue a bit, this seems to be especially true with MBV, sounds quite different depending on where you're standing.

Yeah, they cranked the volume slowly when we saw them. By YMMR it was really quite amazing.

Yeah, that was interesting. Thousands of Tool fans screaming at us, they didn't understand what was happening. They were very upset and offended. It was pretty amusing. I just remembered the audience -- it was that rare perfect sound, with 50% of the crowd cheering you and the other half screaming for you to get off stage.

i just love how sensory kevin shields interviews are, like the parts in the mcgonigal book about him & his sister when he was a kid. or like in this, when I moved to Ireland, it took me a long time to see things as real there. Reality was somewhere else, where we left, like this is so redolent of relocation for me. also i love that the absence of modern press shots has elevated this garycoleman.jpg to his new headshot

I don't know about vomiting, but I have a friend who had to leave during You Made Me Realise because it was making her nauseous.

I've become a bit of an advocate for wearing earplugs to shows in general, so I certainly wouldn't risk it with MBV. Hearing is much too precious. With the right earplugs, the music can sound just as clear but at a safer volume.

what about those ear protectors workmen wear?

I’ve said it a million times before, but any music man who listens to loud PAs, live or clubs needs to get proper moulded earplugs like these http://www.etymotic.com/hp/erme.html or these http://www.acscustom.com/uk/ . Yes they cost a little, but imagine not being able to listen to music when you are older? Not to mention the cost of hearing aids which you will need to wear all the time, not just for a few hours a week Best investment you will make.

What's more: if ear damage were limited to hearing loss that would be one thing...problem is the lack of input tends to get compensated for by non-stop high-frequency ringing (i.e., tinnitus). Seriously, not fun. Sorry to be a party-pooper, but it's my duty as one of the resident geezers to warn all you kids.

I had some hifi earplugs, but I lost one of them about 3/4 of the way through the show and used one of the foam ones provided at the venue.

Sound quality was much better w/ the fancy ones, but the huge difference was in hearing loss. Afterward, the ear w/ the cheap foam plug sounded muffled and I kept trying to make it pop. The other ear was pretty much normal.

be sure to say to yourself "i'm invincible!" on your way into the venue

i think i will actually wear hearing aids to the concert. crank the volume up a little bit.

Took my earplugs out for about a minute during YMMR and it was absolutely unbearable.
